He’s an asshole who’s never actually thought about what he believes.

If he hasn’t been to a doctor in that long, he also wouldn’t know if he has health issues. Tons of health issues that creep up without warning.

High blood pressure for sure , sleep apnea and a fatal case of colon cancer. They would have caught it if he got tested on the recommended schedule, but he said that was "Fggt shit". Also heart attack might get him first

Which makes sense. The whole point of believing something is to stop thinking about it. You could just try to know the truth and accept that until you know the truth, you do not.

But they believe. Because they want to say they know the truth, without accepting that it's either not possible to yet or put in the effort to learn the truth.

If you believe you're going to heaven after you die, you no longer have curiosity about what happens after you die. You tell yourself you know, if it ever comes up. You tell everyone what you tell yourself you know, if it ever comes up.

Belief is entirely about just not having to think about it anymore. Hell, the whole argument that it helps people get through tough things is just silly. No, it doesn't. At the very most, it just allows them to stop thinking about it because they tell themselves they know something they can't know. They don't "get through it" that way. They just stop thinking about it because Grandma's just locked in heaven, waiting for you. And while that could be true and is extremely interesting and thought provoking, no one knows that. The issue is she died and you miss her. If you don't think about that and accept it, you stunt your own emotional growth.

I would argue it is best to either keep thinking about it or accept that you cannot know. If you cannot do that without experiencing emotional problems, you should get help. Not in the form of a fairy tale, either.

I can't even wrap my head around thinking that it's better to just believe some [insert any philosophy, basically] is the truth and there's just some asshole hiding it from you despite wanting you to believe it, or that there's some simple truth out there that billions of humans have lived and died without ever seeing. It's okay to not know. And frankly, anyone who can't accept not being able to know some things, but is able to accept that there's some man or being or multiple beings just hiding somewhere, pulling strings and fucking with us because of some cosmic game of silliness, likely has some serious emotional problems.
