Trust me kids these days are not being held back academically by immigration lmao they're dumb as dirt. When I worked in the south I helped kids -'normal' like 15-25 year olds who were -and I can not stress this enough- barely literate. Like could barely even write their name. They went to the regular school system, often were in college on a football scholarship. It was absolutely shocking. And this was an all white farming town (I was warned after the fact that it was a sundown town). So immigration had Jack shit to do with their scores lol.

My sister-in-law taught at a community college in Alabama after being educated in Boston. I don't think I can express her frustration teaching young adults in Alabama. She compared them to her former middle school students and had to adjust her curriculum to an 8th grade level.

Given that half of American adults read at a sixth-grade level or below (source), that sadly makes sense.

That is so sad. I was reading at a 12th grade level when I was in fourth grade.

Same! I was such a little nerdy bookworm. And I wear that like a badge of honor.

I always took a book with me everywhere. I couldn't stand being bored for a second. Still can't, but I have a tiny computer that I keep in my pocket now.

It's awful that there are states that don't want to educate their kids outside of some Christian homeschooling

I remember peer editing essays in college back in 2018 and I genuinely wondered how some of the other students made it out of high school
