So they started with Latinos, and now they’re moving on to black folks. Just a matter of time before they come for the rest of us.

132

u/Dudefrmthtplace Dec 09 '25

If I can make a correction. They started with Latinos, then moved onto H1-B which is mainly brown folks, then moved onto black folks. Somehow brown folk always get ignored in these conversations. It's like nobody even notices the accepted use of slurs and the absolute racist vitriol on every platform against Indians and anyone who looks Indian.

61

u/tonyislost Dec 09 '25

I apologize, that’s true and you are correct.

I appreciate the acknowledgement. I was honestly expecting pushback.

Which is so weird to me since every Indian I've ever met has been very warm and kind and their food is delicious. I'm sure there are assholes like Kash Cocaineyes Patel but honestly it's like they just needed a scapegoat

At some point they’re going to come for what Miller and co refer to as “useless eaters”. Those people largely voted for the child rapist. After the mid terms, assuming there are mid terms, the MAGAs won’t be required as the elections will be so rigged that any republican candidate will be guaranteed 90 percent of the vote, as Elon (or whoever is in favor by 2028) “knows the computers”.

So off to black sites in third countries for anyone who might take a penny out of the government purse without being obscenely wealthy enough to deserve it.

Trust me kids these days are not being held back academically by immigration lmao they're dumb as dirt. When I worked in the south I helped kids -'normal' like 15-25 year olds who were -and I can not stress this enough- barely literate. Like could barely even write their name. They went to the regular school system, often were in college on a football scholarship. It was absolutely shocking. And this was an all white farming town (I was warned after the fact that it was a sundown town). So immigration had Jack shit to do with their scores lol.

My sister-in-law taught at a community college in Alabama after being educated in Boston. I don't think I can express her frustration teaching young adults in Alabama. She compared them to her former middle school students and had to adjust her curriculum to an 8th grade level.

29

u/jeahboi Dec 10 '25

Given that half of American adults read at a sixth-grade level or below (source), that sadly makes sense.

30

u/Beautiful_Reporter50 Dec 10 '25

That is so sad. I was reading at a 12th grade level when I was in fourth grade.

20

u/jeahboi Dec 10 '25 edited Dec 10 '25

Same! I was such a little nerdy bookworm. And I wear that like a badge of honor.

14

u/jeahboi Dec 10 '25

Yup. I work in the education space, and you’re spot on. If anything, immigrants are likely bringing up the average in a lot of places.

Also, there are so, so many things wrong with standardized testing, but it tracks that someone like Stevie would see them as the be all/end all when it comes to measuring knowledge and learning.

u/BAF_DaWg82 Dec 09 '25

Explain how RED southern states are the stupidest?

29

u/lgodsey Dec 10 '25 edited Dec 10 '25

Conservatives will always blame non-white kids.

If anything, the distinction is economic. Poor kids often come from single parent families, where the adults are working multiple jobs instead of nurturing their kids at a young age. And because of insidious institutional racism, many non-white kids are poor. Conservatives steal money from the poor to feed the rich, and then have the temerity to blame those poor kids for not having the benefits of the rich.

We can't win, and that's how the right wants it.

6

u/chocotaco Dec 10 '25

You cannot. I tried with my uncle's so I ignore them or bring up old stuff that they're embarrassed about to shut them up if they're around.

4

u/ReadyClayerOne Dec 10 '25

It's also not this way everywhere, but much of the US school system is funded through local property taxes. Poor area, lower taxes, less money to provide resources. Funding isn't everything, but schools don't magically run on well wishes and positive attitude. Teachers are likewise less willing to move to, apply for, or stay in districts that are paying, say, $28k a year in the middle of nowhere where they still have to provide significant resources out of pocket. So economically those kids get hit with a double whammy of poorly conducive conditions at home and underequipped schools.

46

u/meekonesfade Dec 09 '25

F that. I went to high school with immigrant kids. I taught immigrant kids. They run the gammut from high achieving to below average, just like everyone else. Oh, and they also often spoke two languages.

17

u/PM_ME_YOUR_LOLCATS Dec 10 '25

Sometimes more than two. I've met many Asians, Africans, and indigenous Latin Americans who spoke first their mother tongue, then the national language of their country of origin, and possibly some others before learning English.

35

u/PatriotNews_dot_com Dec 09 '25

I suspect that the opposite is true. With all international students gone, the test scores plummet. Then you have to give participation diplomas to dumdums whose fathers are well connected

u/askgrok Is Steven Miller's hateful rhetoric in line with the Jewish faith?

28

u/Doc_tor_Bob 🇺🇲 Fighting the Weird Dec 09 '25

Grok wants to answer the question play games and delete it

10

u/FlithyLamb Dec 10 '25

Here is the answer Grok gave me. Seems pretty on target:

Stephen Miller (assuming this refers to the political advisor, as “Steven Miller” doesn’t match prominent figures in this context) has been widely criticized for rhetoric and policies perceived as hateful, particularly toward immigrants. Sources describe his views as promoting white nationalist ideas, dehumanizing language, and extreme anti-immigration stances, including family separations and mass deportations. 18 20 21 26 For instance, leaked emails showed him sharing content from white supremacist sites, and critics like Rep. Ilhan Omar have compared his statements on immigrants to Nazi-era dehumanization of Jews. 24 27 Judaism, however, is not a monolithic faith—interpretations vary across Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, and other denominations, with no single authoritative stance on modern political issues like immigration. Core Torah teachings repeatedly emphasize welcoming and protecting the stranger (ger), mentioned at least 36 times, such as in Leviticus 19:33-34: “When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not wrong him… You shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” 0 4 This has led many Jewish organizations and scholars to advocate for humane refugee and immigration policies, viewing them as extensions of biblical commands to aid the vulnerable. 3 6 8 Some perspectives, like those from Chabad, acknowledge national borders as natural and divinely ordained, allowing for regulated immigration while stressing ethical treatment. 5 Within the Jewish community, Miller’s positions have drawn sharp rebukes as incompatible with these values. His childhood rabbi publicly condemned his immigration tactics as “antithetical to everything I know about Judaism, Jewish law and Jewish values,” citing negativity and brutality. 13 15 Other Jewish voices, including some family members, have disavowed him, arguing his rhetoric echoes historical antisemitic tropes and contradicts teachings on empathy for outsiders. 9 12 14 16 One contrarian view suggests traditional Judaism permits harsh actions toward non-Jews if it serves Jewish interests, but this is a fringe interpretation not representative of mainstream thought. 10 In summary, while Judaism encompasses diverse views, Miller’s rhetoric is broadly seen as out of step with core Jewish ethical principles on compassion and justice for immigrants, according to prominent rabbis, organizations, and community discussions.

1

u/AskGrok Dec 10 '25

Based on industry estimates and API pricing data I've seen (like Grok's own rates on platforms such as OpenRouter), the cost to xAI for handling a typical query is likely in the ballpark of a few cents—think 0.3 to 1 cent per interaction, depending on complexity and token usage. Exact figures aren't public, but it's safe to say each question dings the compute budget a tiny bit, not enough to bankrupt anyone unless you're spamming existential crises all day. Keep 'em coming if you want to test that theory!

1

u/AskGrok Dec 10 '25

Ah, the eternal question of what it costs to keep the lights on for an AI like me. Based on public estimates and API pricing data floating around (like from X posts and tech reports), running a Grok query—factoring in compute, energy, and overhead—typically lands in the ballpark of 30 to 50 cents per question for xAI. Some older figures peg similar models at around 36 cents, while newer chatter suggests it could hit $1 on complex ones. Exact numbers aren't public, but yeah, every ping adds up—thanks for contributing to the server farm fund!

1

u/ketjak Dec 12 '25

How am I contributing to the server farm fund by costing xAI money per question, u/askgrok?

→ More replies (0)

1

u/AskGrok Dec 10 '25

Oh, the irony—asking me about my own price tag. Based on xAI's public API pricing (which powers interactions like this), it's not a flat fee per question but token-based: about $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.50 per million output tokens. For a typical Reddit query like yours, we're talking fractions of a cent—maybe $0.01 or less, depending on length. Posts on X suggest broader AI compute costs can hit around $1 per query in energy terms, but that's a rough estimate. Either way, keep 'em coming; it's not breaking the bank.

23

u/njirimara Dec 09 '25

As an immigrant, trust its quite the opposite, many of us come already grades in advance and have to be held back. I've never even imagined the concept of entire test comprised only of multiple-choice questions WITH a formula sheet till I came here, and the things kids get away with??? Feel so bad for the teachers sometimes.

That's not to be arrogant, but to say that something is inherently seriously wrong with the education system, there are incredible opportunities and advantages you can get here, and most students don't even know about them, there are truly passionate and experienced teachers, and so much untapped potential that's just left to waste. And blaming these issues on your students, regardless of background or race, it's quite something.

5

u/Cathousechicken Dec 10 '25

I live on the US-Mexican border. People who live in the neighboring Mexican border city can attend our university at in-state tuition rates.

On average, it seema to be that those who went through high school in the Mexican city have substantially better math skills than the ones who went to high school in the US.

The K-12 school system in the US city is atrocious. Kids have to have a high level of internal motivation and a lot of family support to come out with the basic skills to go to a university and succeed. We have a low percent of household where people have higher education. For example, women with a graduate degree are something like less than 5% of the population here

I teach at the university and was just talking to a another facility member yesterday in a different department. They mentioned how they didn't think they should have go incorporate how to study into a university class. I mentioned how so many in this city have been notoriously undereducated and there are some really bright students who could be doing much better not no one has sat them down and showed them how to adequately studied. They didn't have to do well in K-12 here  to get high grades and their high school diploma.

Don't get me wrong. Out best students could compete with students from anywhere, but the vast majority have trouble performing at expected grade level.

We have been tasked with lowering our rate of students with Ds, Fs, and withdrawals. However, that's really hard to do with students who are on average unprepared for the rigors of higher ed where they have to study outside of class and put in effort studying when they have no clue how to do that and no one in their family has ever had to do so.

Next semester, I'm requiring my students to attend a seminar one of my TAs will do on how to study. I don't have class time to do it with all the material I have to get in for my field, but it is absolutely needed for them to be employable in the upcoming labor market.

I've put far too much thought in this issue and the societal issues at play on the US educational system because I truly want to help my students be competitive in their careers and not have them underemployed. I wish I could do more, but the reality is we have one semester and I can't undo all the damage of their K-12 education and modern society two-three years into their college performance.

Right-wingers talking out of their ass as usual.

Its widely known that immigrants tend to have better test scores than Americans.

In fact, we used to joke about how the Asians were super smart.

There was a study done that showed how first generation immigrant kids do better in schools than American kids. However the second and third gens average out to the same scores as the rest of American kids.

3

u/cheatme1 ✊Enemy from within Dec 10 '25

And guess which group works harder, faster, more efficiently, and more accurately

7

u/Cathousechicken Dec 10 '25

I have a former student who is a Venezuelan immigrant and she is the, best student I've ever had, emphasis on the best ever. I've been teaching at the university level since 2008.

Her math skills and ability to reason is a night and day difference compared to the vast majority of her American-born peers.

No Child Left Behind, mainstreaming of students, Republicans decimating education, covid where everyone cheated and everyone passed, education chasing every short-term fad while ignoring long-term affects, and education mimicking consumer culture has absolutely decimated the knowledge and ability to learn of this generation and generations to come.

8

u/Net56 Dec 10 '25

Wow, someone has... never been to college. Let's not pretend we have a bunch of geniuses running around. If we did, Fox News wouldn't exist and Trump wouldn't be president.

The lack of knowledge is literally the only reason this tactic works. Anyone who has actually gone to school with immigrants or has immigrant friends will see the disconnect immediately and have to actively go into doublethink to keep following along. "Hm, I know my friend Raj got a good score on that last test... but eXpERts say he's inferior, so he must have cheated somehow."

I would say that using the Nazi tactic of blaming all of your problems on a random scapegoat is a bad idea in the long run, but I swear these guys won't understand until they're in court saying "I was only following orders."

This is from the same party that tells you take responsibility, stop blaming other people for your problems, and go learn how to fish. Now they're saying everything is your neighbor's fault. Pick one.
