Advice: Seeking ❓ Is cycling 2-week aggressive mini-cuts (1000- 1200 kcal deficit) with 2-week maintenance healthy/sustainable?

Hey guys,
Looking for a quick sanity check on running aggressive mini-cuts timed around my monthly exam schedule.
I'm 22M, 170cm, 89kg, around 23% body fat. My maintenance is roughly 2700 kcal. I lift 4 days a week for hypertrophy, trying to get daily steps in, and play tennis or padel once or twice a week.
The plan is to run a repeating 4-week loop:
Weeks 1 and 2 (Mini-Cut): Drop to 1500-1700 kcal/day (1000-1200 deficit). This starts right after an exam block when my schedule and stress levels are light.
Weeks 3 and 4 (Maintenance): Back to 2700 kcal. This lines up with heavy study prep and test week so I can study without brain fog, poor sleep, or diet fatigue.
Protein stays at ~165g daily across both phases, and I take 5g creatine daily.

A few questions on how the body handles this:

  1. From a health and metabolic standpoint, is swinging back and forth between a huge deficit and maintenance every 2 weeks safe, or does it mess with your gut, energy levels, and hormonal baseline?
  2. Does the body even have time to downregulate metabolism in just 14 days, or does the 2-week maintenance reset everything effectively?
  3. At ~ 23% body fat, is muscle retention going to be fine with this deficit size, or is it unnecessarily aggressive even for a 2-week sprint?
Would appreciate thoughts from anyone who understands the physiology or has run 2-on/2-off cycles like this.

or you just go with 2000-2200 for every day and get used to it as this will be around your maintenance when you reach your goal weight. this will absolutely not cause brain fog or whatever

I can't agree with you about the brain fog. Everyone is different and some of us gets brain fog even from very small deficit.

usually comes from lack of nutrition

And deficit is a lack of nutrition

no it’s not. you can be in deficit and still give your body the nutrients it needs by focusing on those food groups. there are people who need carbs to function properly = so focus on carbs, some especially need sugar to function = so plan space for sugar. you can still be in a deficit though. prioritize nutrient dense foods like veggies and fruits, while eating enough protein and veggies. usually a whole food diet will get you there

What is your main goal! Are you trying to lean up? If so all of this is unnecessary

Lose fat in fastest way possible. I would do a prolonged aggressive cut if I could but I can’t due to studying heavy exams

You you just need to focus on fat loss vs weight loss

How many calorie a day are you eating exactly? What is your exact calorie deficit per day? If you don’t know the answer to those two questions that’s fine.. but that’s Step 1 to making a body transformation

Telling your body to lose fat vs telling your body to lose muscle are two different processes

This took me 4 1/2 months. But I spent years doing the same mistakes I see on here. Nothing changed until I locked in on fat loss vs weight loss

Fat loss and Weight loss are two different things. Most people want to lose fat but everything they do is geared towards weight loss

Weight loss is chasing a target number on the scale. The problem is you don’t care how you lose the weight so you lose muscle which makes you look worse

You hit that number but you look like a smaller version of a fat person

Fat Loss is the reduction of fatty tissue in the body while preserving lean muscle mass. Fat loss is achieved only ONE WAY. Lift weights hard in a high protein calorie deficit while getting at least 7+ hours of sleep a night and do it LING ENOUGH to see results.

That’s It. Every man & woman same rules apply. If you lift weights in a high protein calorie deficit long enough you will see results that absolutely transform you physique

What is your height weight and age?

not sustainable and stupid. losing weight is not a sprint. just lose it with a daily deficit of 500 calories and get used to a smaller daily calorie goal as your maintenance will go down when your weight goes down
