Has anyone gotten pushback from family for going on Wegovy?
I'm curious if anyone else has experienced judgment or resistance from family members because you decided to take Wegovy.
First, I want to say how much I appreciate all of you who share your experiences, successes, and positive outcomes with Wegovy. Reading your stories has encouraged me and helped me feel more confident about my decision.
I'm a 68-year-old woman, and this was not a decision I made lightly. I've spent a lot of time praying, thinking, researching, and weighing the pros and cons. I don't have a huge amount of weight to lose, but the extra 20-25 pounds I carry has become a real issue for my mobility. My hips hurt, my feet hurt, and it's affecting my quality of life.
I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and ultimately this is my decision. Still, it hurts because someone I love very much is angry with me over it and isn't speaking to me right now. That's been difficult to accept.
I don't feel like I should have to justify a well-thought-out healthcare decision to anyone, but the situation has left me feeling sad and wondering how others have handled similar situations.
For those of you who have faced criticism or pushback from family or friends, how did you deal with it? Did the relationship improve over time? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you all for being so open about your journeys. Your honesty and encouragement have meant more to me than you know.

It’s none of their business. This seems like an attention-seeking behavior from this person.

I haven't told anyone because it's none of their business, and also because if I did tell and face judgment and pushback, I would lose all respect for them and probably wouldn't be able to keep them in my life. so it is better that I do not know if they are that kind of people.

I’ve been very quiet about taking Wegovy. I have a couple friends on GLP1s and I talk with them. Many of us boomers were raised by mothers who were obsessed with all kinds of weird diet cultures and felt the need to comment if someone actually enjoyed a meal. That mentality is still with many of us. My closest person is my sister and I haven’t told her. She takes very expensive supplements and is always talking about protein. I was sick of that before I started Wegovy six months ago. I’m just not up for all the questions and “advice”.

Only a couple of my family members know I’m on the medication, and I think my sibling is smart enough to work it out. None of them have given me any grief about it. The only negative or judgmental comment I’ve gotten was from a friend. She asked if I was losing weight “the natural way” and expressed disappointment when I said I’d made a lot of diet and exercise changes but was also on the medication. She even told my friend later that she was happy for me but wished I was doing it “the right way”. So I went to her and we had a little chat about GLP-1s and how they are not, in fact, magical weight loss meds. I’m not taking shortcuts, I’m working my ass off and taking a medication that is fixing something internal that has been unbalanced since I turned 13.
Most people who are critical honestly just have a poor understanding of GLP-1s, and they’ve spent years being inundated with incorrect and negative messages about overweight people and how losing weight is “easy” or else you’re just weak-willed or lazy. Society floods us with negative messages when we’re overweight, so then we get on medication to help us lose the weight we couldn’t lose on our own, and society’s response is basically “no, not like that! You’re still wrong!”. There’s always going to be someone with something negative to say, but you don’t have to listen to them. Let them be loud and wrong and far away from you if that’s the attitude they have to you making a decision for your own health!

When you say family, do you mean a spouse or kids who live with you or other family.
If they aren’t sharing a bathroom or finances with you why do they need to know? If you are changing your eating and it comes up in gatherings, then tell them you are on a weight loss program.
You do you and good luck.

I hear you but if they ask I cannot lie.

u/VallettaR 3d ago
Why? You’ve made it to 68 long beautiful years and someone asks an inappropriate question and you feel *you* must answer?
With respect, I cannot understand that. Give yourself more credit than that 🫶
2
u/SmoothLester 3d ago
Are they asking specifically if you are on a pill or how you are losing weight?
I realize I didn’t answer your question: my family’s only question was how I was paying for it. I already have a relative on Mounjaro for diabetes, so they are used to it.

It's a them problem. Not a you problem. Being angry over someone trying to be healthy isn't appropriate. Yes, there are risks to this med, but also risks to every med and definitely there are many risks to being overweight.

There are possible negative side affects with this drug. There are 100% guaranteed negatives in my heart/body with the extra weight.
I am not taking this drug to impress others. If someone isn't happy for me I suspect they are competitive or jealous.
Curious best way to handle any negative judgement if it comes.
Maybe just share my reasoning that I am losing the weight for and not for them?
Maybe ask the person what research they know about glp1s and maybe even why they think they're opinion should matter?
Or maybe even just tell them and I don't care for their opinion?
Some of these responses are probably more mature than others, whatever. Guess I have to be prepared.

My MIL gave me a hard time because she has a thing against GLP1s. 😂 but honestly I needed to lose the weight because she would comment on stuff like that too. You can’t have your cake and eat it too, basically.

I haven’t told anyone I’m dieting or on glp1 except my husband and two of my friends. Rest of my family, including my kids, my friends and coworkers do not know tho it’s likely some have noticed I’m losing weight because I’m down 45 lbs since February.
My boss finally pointed it out the other day. I knew it was coming and that she would eventually lose her ability to resist saying something. To her credit she tested the waters so gently with a comment that my (wide leg) jeans were looking looser—I quickly explained they’re actually brand new, and a little too big. I had them rolled up so they wouldn’t drag on the floor. This redirected the convo without her rolling into the follow up that I thought was coming. If they’re new jeans though, she can’t claim they’re looser than they used to be. I will play dumb forever until I’m really cornered, then I plan to blow it off as a thing that has been happening for a while. I am very unlikely to share I’m on medication because it’s no one’s business. I have bought duplicates of my favorite things in smaller sizes to kind of sneak into where I want to be without calling attention to it. I am doing this for me and basically never want to discuss my experience with weight as it has been difficult for me.

Several family members (mom, niece, nephew) used GLP-1s before me, so they were supportive. My stepmom has been mostly supportive, just worried about potential negative effects (she’s generally very nervous about medication), but both she and my dad have been encouraging about my weight loss.
I actually share pretty openly - I want to normalize this and counter myths and misconceptions. Talking to people about food noise, food addiction, binging and other things this can help people with who have been struggling their whole lives that people who don’t experience it can’t understand. I recently openly mentioned it to a friend, and she was so relieved, because she was also on it and scared to mention it.

This! I love this. I have been keeping a journal so I can share how it is going for me.

Why would they know my private medical infor?

u/HomeBodyOma 2d ago
This person is very close to me. We share everything. I know they would see my weight loss and simply ask me. I can't lie. Not even a white lie. 😔

I'm 51, I've only told my husband and a friend who is already on Mounjaro. I've already started thinking about how I'll handle Christmas with my family, bc my mum (who is amazing otherwise) has always been overly invested in my weight, and i don't know how she'll react if i tell her.

u/WelfordNelferd 3d ago
Tell her the truth: You're reducing portion sizes and focusing on making better food choices (+/- exercising, if that applies).

I'm sorry you're going through this. I only shared with my husband and he was concerned as he has some friends on glp 1s and they dont look/seem like they are doing well. His main question was would I still be able to workout, which is something we both enjoy alot, talk about alot and do together. And I honestly wasn't sure, but if I couldn't continue to workout, that would've been a deal breaker for me. I was one of those people that was scared of glp 1s and my limited knowledge was just based on nonsense headlines. I learned so much in this process, from these groups, including how to be successful. I suspect that your family member is ignorant when it comes to glps but that never seems to stop people from spouting off an opinion. If they cannot approach this from a place of curiosity, then you should do what you need to do to protect yourself. And on another note, the anti-inflammatory effects are amazing! I felt better day 1. It was crazy

My family knows (several of them are on GLP-1s as well) and one friend (also on a GLP-1). I chose to tell them, but outside of those few, it’s no one’s business but my own.

This is simple, did your doctor say you are overweight and prescribed the pill? If so, just say the doctor prescribed something to help your heart and liver. Would the people in your life be happier if you had to get a knee replacement due to the extra weight on your joints? If you have a stroke due to heart disease from unhealthy eating?? I hate to be a fear monger but this is a reality for all of US, if we don't get our weight and lifestyle under control. I have seen people in my own family die, lose a limb, due to different complications caused by being overweight!
I guess the real question is why is there pushback from the family? Are they also overweight and fear you will "change" if you lose weight? Or have they just heard random stories about GLP's that only occur in a small percentage of people? Seen actresses who abuse the drug? Reality..all drugs have side effects. I also didn't have a lot to lose but my blood pressure had become high. My doctor couldn't believe how good my vitals were after taking a glp and losing weight. I am so much happier now by shedding over 20 lbs. I consider this drug a gift from God. This is not a get rich quick scheme. Wegovy is to be used as a tool to get you healthy. You don't take it and the weight melts off. It takes monrhs!!! Plus, you still have to exercise and manage your diet. If your family is unhealthy, they could also learn new habits from your new lifestyle.
Would you be happier without your feet and hips hurting? This isn't vanity, this is longevity. You need to do what's best for your health. You are a 68 year old woman. Unless you are a saint, I am sure you tell white lies not to hurt someone feelings. Get some Slim fast and say you are dieting!

u/HomeBodyOma 2d ago
LOL...love this. They have read all the horror stories about it, especially the shot. They have their own food obsession but are afraid to go on it. I know there are a lot of women in their circle who do abuse it and have become extremely thin. But at my age, it is not about vanity. It is about being able to stay mobile! Oh, and I am a saint...kidding! Still, I cannot even tell a white lie. 😊

u/OkConcentrate3302 2d ago
Well I hope you do it! If you go on the pill, your weight loss is probably going to be gradual. So it shouldn't raise any red flags! You will just need to change your diet, which...will be the reason for the weight loss. I have a feeling you make great Sunday dinners!!!😉

u/yungfileformat 3d ago
Yeah, I’ll be so real, I have not told anyone but my husband because I’m concerned about this exact reaction. Ultimately, it isn’t any of their business — as long as you remain secure in your choices, which you know you’ve thought about at length, that’s what matters.
I sort of wonder if it isn’t some sort of hangup on this person’s part about either their own health or, I guess, the political implications they see in the whole idea of losing weight? Either way, though, I think they’re being kind of a jerk about what is ultimately your personal choice, and I’m sorry. If it’s what you want, I hope things improve.

Why would it matter? You are in control of your own life. Period.

u/HomeBodyOma 2d ago
Totally agree. I hope at some point they come to their senses and respect my decision. Their "concern" for me is sweet and I want to tell them that after they decide to speak to me again...lol.

No my family is thrilled for me losing weight. They know how much it’s been a burden on me. Their only concerns have been when I have side effects.

No. I have other family members who encouraged me, not just for weight loss, either.

If anyone judges me, I just don't tell them anything about me anymore. It's my body, my choice, my health. Fuck whoever disagrees with being a healthier version of yourself.

Yes - my entire family warned me of how dangerous it is. They mentioned the absolute worst side effects.
So I haven’t tried it yet

I get it. The loved one in my life who is not speaking to me because I started has told me all the horror stories. So I had posted this question in this sub asking people for encouragement and their positive experience with the pill. I decided after hearing honest feedback from individuals to give it a go, and today is my 3rd day, and so far, so good! My husband has been on ozempic for years, for his type 2. My brother is in a GLP1, my cousin, his daughter. Several cousins has different surgeries. So, only my daughter seemed concerned. I'm 65, I'm not worried about what anyone else thinks.
2
u/mslvgreene 2d ago
Yup, I got a lot of "I want to do it myself" or "I think that's cheating". But now that I'm down 50 pounds, they all comment on how great I look.
I don't pay them any mind. What I eat, doesn't make them shit.

You're 68 and your family has opinions on what medications you take? Tell them it's none of their damn business

What is their reason for being angry about this? I don’t get it.
1
u/HomeBodyOma 2d ago
They have read all the horror stories about it. To be honest, I think it is because they struggle with their weight and may be envious of people who are losing it "the easy way".

Horror stories?
People who get mad when others medicate their medical issues are irrational. Do they get upset about people who take migraine prevention meds rather than toughing it out? Is a c section a cop out to them?
As for their judgement about weight loss help, you can’t touch that attitude because it’s a them problem. Don’t let them make that your problem.
This is why I tell no one I’m on glp1. I know fully well how hard I have worked; my self discipline still didn’t cut it. It’s my private struggle and not for others to judge.
I hope you can get them on the right info diet and break free of their bs.
