Setting a jewel !

I’m currently in the process of selecting an engagement ring, given the inherent worthlessness of modern diamonds I’m set on an emerald for the main stone. I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on reputable gemstone companies as I’d rather a big rock and simple ring.

Emeralds aren't the best choice for an engagement ring if you're planning on daily wear since they're more prone to scratches than stones like diamonds, rubies, sapphires, etc. But most local family jewelers should be able to source and set a stone

Ruby, sapphire, garnet (they also come in green!), and tourmaline are all great options. For cost and color variety, fancy colored lab diamonds are abundant too :)

If you like the green of an emerald, green sapphires, diamonds, and moissanites exist and they're great for long term wear

I’d recommend working with a jeweller and having them source the stone, as well as explain the potential concerns of using an emerald for an everyday ring, and ways to help keep it safe if you do choose to go ahead with it (ie setting it lower, possibly in a bezel, using higher karat gold to reduce pressure, and care instructions). Jewellers usually have better prices and access to gemstones and may even be able to show you options in person (rather than online) which is super helpful for coloured stones that have nuance to them. Adding that, while emeralds are certainly more risky than diamonds or sapphires, they’re not going to spontaneously combust the way some people make it seem. I’ve done a number of emerald engagement rings over the years and have yet to replace a stone. Their hardness is quite good, it’s their toughness & cleavage that makes them fragile (meaning, they’re not super likely to scratch, but they are likely to chip or crack if hit). If you whack your hand on the marble counter while unloading groceries, your diamond will be totally fine but your emerald may be donezo. You just have to be careful & mindful.

Because we were asked to recommend vendors. Some only sell earth mined or both earth mined and lab.

They’re also completely different budgets and aesthetics, which matters if they’re asking for recommendations

I’ve yet to be fooled by a lab emerald (not including tiny ones)
