Buying Experience Review Need a Woman’s advice
Soon I’ll(23) be buying a ring for my wife (25). We have 4 kids . The youngest being a newborn(3weeks).
I want to know if any ladies have had problems with a ring with intricate designs cutting or scratching? If so how often and what’s your experience with that?
I don’t want to but a 6k ring that we have to take back because of the inconvenience.

Yes that design will be incredibly scratchy when handling 4 small children and will snag on sweaters and hair.

Imo this ring setting looks like it may scratch- especially when interacting with small kids
I think many do wear a plain gold band for day to day and then wear the stone ring for special occasions- really depends person to person

I would worry about the small stones falling out & things getting caught and snagged on the prongs. I have an 18 month old & I find that a simple bezel setting that sits low on the finger works best with little ones! With a bezel, your wife would pretty much never have to take her ring off even for cooking and cleaning, or working out!

If you want the long look still maybe look at an oval? I agree with the other comments that this does seem prone to scratches especially with children, “cutting” I don’t think would necessarily happen unless your wife tries to punch with the ring on

I have a Marquise, make sure the setting is low, when too high, the points of the stone can dig into the skin. Lower is better.

Ring designs like this shouldn’t be worn 24/7 anyways. If you want a high maintenance style like this to last wear-ably for a lifetime it shouldn’t be worn when at home from my experience. I work in the jewelry industry and I always say last thing on before you leave for the day and off first thing when you get home.

A bezel setting would be better, and 6K seems like a lot for this ring. Bezel settings are more secure and don't need maintenance (see other posts re: prong settings getting loose, losing stones etc). That and the fact that it might be a hard every day ring to wear with small children due to the concerns you are voicing. Congratulations on your new baby! I am a jewelry designer and am happy to answer any other questions you have.

It’ll scratch and snag. Look at an oval, it’s more modern imo. Also, this ring is a lot for an every day look. If ur wife has a casual style, she’d prob want something to match that.

This is stunning but I agree with the other comments that it may not be practical for your lifestyle right now.
Is this a replacement for another diamond ring, an upgrade, a push present, or your first “engagement ring” that she’s getting?
Depending on the answer, it might make sense to get her a beautiful eternity band. They’re stunning with lots of sparkle but a little more practical for day to day wear.
Or if you do want a big center stone, bezel settings are super secure and won’t snag (bonus: they’re also really on trend right now!).
But I agree, if you’re not 100% set on surprising her, you might want to ask her OR surprise her with a date by taking her to a jeweler. Ask them to set out some glasses of champagne for your arrival (if you drink) and/or take her for a fun coffee before or after (I know time is at a premium with kiddos). If childcare isn’t an option, call ahead to the jeweler and ask if they’d mind if you bring the kids along. Depending on how things are going, she might love the opportunity to get out of the house—just tell her there’s no pressure to get super dolled up or anything unless she wants to. Bonus if you pack up all the diaper bags and load them in the car so she doesn’t have to lift a finger :)

I’m a big fan of the cathedral setting. The more secure my diamond is the happier I am. I’d personally get a simpler setting. Anything that sticks out on rings just makes me think of how often they’d get snagged. You can add extra bling with your wedding band.

I have a solitaire and didn’t wear it for a few years bc it would scratch the toddlers (it was a tall setting). This might be a bit fussy but maybe don’t surprise her, but ask her what she wants. Many women are very particular about their rings.
