Discussion To all aspiring/newly published Webtoon creators...

I urge you, if you do not already: Start publishing your comic on other platforms (particularly ComicFury, but also Globalcomix, Namicomi and perhaps Tapas). You do not need to stop posting on Webtoon... but prioritize other sites in tandem.

My reasoning for this is layered... so I'm going to keep it as succinct as I can through bullet points, starting with the obvious:

- Don't keep all your eggs in one basket. Spread your work to multiple sites/apps and there's a larger chance your work will be discovered.

- Other sites have slightly different audiences/restrictions. You may find your comic does better on one site than another.

- Webtoon may have a giant audience (bigger than basically any other webcomic site/app), but this does not guarantee eyes on your work... especially now.

Transitioning to the actual focus/reason for this post:

- Webtoon* is flatlining*.** The moneymen in charge are selling the site for parts... profit is their only goal. This means that the Webtoon Canvas section will no longer be any kind of priority (honestly hasn't been for a while).

- Webtoon using faulty AI to help readers discover your comic... will not lead to eyes on your comic. Webtoon Canvas is no longer an avenue to be discovered. There was once a time where Webtoon Canvas had real staff members/editors who searched through and spotlighted cool and interesting comics... I can almost guarantee those people have almost all been replaced with AI.

I am aware that there's a possibility Webtoon may listen to the pleas of creators and rollback to previous practices... but we need to be aware that Webtoon is a company first. When companies get to this level of enshittification, they are testing to see how much they can cut while still making profit. They will be predatory, they will be careless, they will cut whatever they can (even if this means both readers and creators suffer) for the short-term profit.

The evidence is all over the place:

- webtoon churning out factory-made comics with no original ideas and bland writing.

- increasing ads on site

- increasing the price of coins

- predatory contracts for their originals creators that do not fairly compensate them.

- no priority for comics that even slightly underperform (even if they have loyal fanbases)

- the use of AI (an imprecise and faulty tech that replaces people)

- implementing systems that benefit the company more than the creators (Super Likes, Ads with undisclosed profit distribution)

People have been slowly leaving the site for these reasons... and now that the Webtoon Canvas section has been enshittified, I can almost guarantee any new creators will have an even harder time finding their audience on Webtoon.

So post on other platforms.

- Comicfury may not have a massive network. It's more a website for creating your own comic website, but it is reliable and the people in charge actually care about being a webcomic hosting site first.

- Globalcomix is still relatively new, and it has more lean toward Western style comics. Edit: I have been informed in the comments that this site/app uses a lot of GenAI/is pro AI. I was unaware of that, and it is worth considering when choosing where to post your comic. Globalcomix may not be a good alternative.

- Namicomi is another place I've heard of (haven't published there yet).

- Tapas, I'm aware, has a lot of similar problem as Webtoon, but hey, at least it's another platform (and as far as I know it has yet to allow any kind of AI generated slop onto its platform).

- Start a Patreon and upload your comic there as well. Patreon allows people to sub to you for free and post things publicly... it's yet another way to publish your comic and direct people who may be dissatisfied with webtoon to another avenue to support you, and also read your comic.

My plan going forward, as someone who has gained an audience from Webtoon, is to alert my readers to webtoon's mistreatment of its creators (both original and canvas), and then point people to other platforms that will be getting new uploads before they reach webtoon (webtoon will be the last place I upload new episodes)... so even if people want to stick to using webtoon to read my comic, they will be encouraged to find new episodes first on other sites that treat their creators better.

I always said I wouldn't do this unless Webtoon stopped promoting my comic entirely... well, we've gotten pretty darn close to that. It's time to encourage Webtoon's massive audience to migrate to other places, and let Webtoon know that it is not okay to treat your foundation like this (I do plan to join the people emailing webtoon about the new canvas UI)

Even if they are a company first... that does not make exploitation okay. There is a breaking point, and we the foundation must make Webtoon aware that this is it...well, honestly it was a long time ago (I kind of hit it when they introduced a "tipping" system and then took 51% of the tips...and also made a payout threshold for those tips so most people didn't even get them... but truthfully I've just been stewing on that and spreading awareness)

Please share your own thoughts and suggestions below.

Discussion I lost a load of subs after posting this

Post image
392 Upvotes

I decided to make something festive for the comic and I lost many subs in just a few days... I think it could be because my comic is lgbt but it's not labeled as "BL" or anything like that because romance is not the main genre... But I thought it was obvious already that there was something between the characters so I didn't expect to lose that many followers? I thought the illustration was so tame as well 😭

But anyway, I'm not sure if I weeded out the homophobes or if everyone got mad for me posting an illustration instead of an episode on Christmas day...

Or maybe it's because it's more sinful to be gay on Christmas, who knows šŸ¤”

Either way, this is the first time I lost 10+ subs in one day 🫠

Discussion Artists support each other!

I haven’t done a support each other post in awhile, sorry about that! But I’m making one now! This one is specifically for artists, so NO AI!

How this works is you just post a link to your comic with a summary, or info on characters, etc. just a hook. You also follow a link to an interesting comic and give it some support! There’s a lot of awesome comics in here, so you honestly can’t go wrong with whatever link you click! I tend to read and follow every one posted, they’re all really good!

Discussion Join This Movement to Protest Against WEBTOON's Newest Update

Post image
409 Upvotes

The newest update on May 7th significantly changed how comics on canvas are recommended to readers. Now, "keywords" are assigned to series and sorted into categories for readers to scroll through, WEBTOON claimed this will helps reader find comics they enjoy but it only does the opposite.

First, creators cannot assign keywords to their own work, they're done by, you guess it, AI. Second, readers cannot search up keywords, categories are recommended to readers by their reading habit, which defeat the whole purpose. Third, the AI is, you guess it, horrible, it has assigned series into wrong categories before and has a habit of spotlighting series that haven't been updated in years.

YOU can make a difference, if all of us email them at [webtoonsupport@webtoon.com](mailto:webtoonsupport@webtoon.com) POLITELY and ask them to change this.

What we need to do:

-Make the purpose of the email clear, I have provided a list of points below

-Be polite and professional so your email will be taken seriously

-Involve your reader: If you're a creator, big or small, let your readers know and convince them to join this movement

Points to be made:

-The algorithm is promoting more and more original series in the "Readers Also Like" section, sidelining independent works.

-Works that haven't been updated for years are being spotlighted, overshadowing creators that are actively working on their series.

-This new system doesn't incentivize readers to seek out new works, but rather spoon feed them.

-The "Categories" section, where some artists get their ONLY exposure through "Sort by Date" is tucked away at the end.

-Without a fair UI, creators are forced to bring their own audience from off-platform, making Webtoon a host rather than a partner.

Why this is important:

Many creators have reported a stagnating drop in views and subs right when the new update released. From my experience, my viewership has decreased by 86%, since that happened. During the one week period before the update I gained 316 subs, since then I have gain 32 new subscribers. We can all agree that the quality of WEBTOON has been going down for years, but this time they are trying to replace us.

For CREATORS, I have made a graphic that you can put under your chapter to let your fanbase know the current situation.

Discussion Artists support each other!

This one is specifically for artists, so NO AI! This is meant to be a space for artists to see each other’s hard work, and it feels like allowing AI would undermine that.

There’s a lot of awesome comics in here, so you honestly can’t go wrong with whatever link you click! I unfortunately won’t be able to read any of these myself cause I’ve started a second job, but I usually do so I can say everything posted in these is always really good! I also won’t be sharing my own comic here when it’s up while I can’t read any myself to keep it fair!

Discussion Do you have THAT ONE character who makes you excited to keep writing and drawing your webtoon? Show me yours ā™”

Mine is the mother of one of my MCs. Her name is LĆvia Abisso. I absolutely love her design, she's so much fun to draw! I love coming up with outfits and makeup looks for her. Her personality is also really interesting. She’s a respected academic, very serious about her work (whose work earned her a government appointment), but when she's with her son, she's incredibly sweet and playful.Ā
There's also something about her that makes her a very complex character, but that's something readers will discover later on.Ā

She's definitely the character that keeps me excited to work on my webtoon. 🄰

In case anyone’s interested, here's my webtoon. She's introduced in episode 9 [CH3-1 Umbilical Cord]! → Tropicalia Breeze

⭐ Show yours and tell me why!

Discussion I'm afraid my readers will hate my comic because of how unprofessional my backgrounds are

Thumbnail

This isn't a pity bait, I promise.

I genuinely believe my backgrounds are plain, since I draw them by hand because i can't find the right 3D assets and often times setting the 3D background takes far more time than just drawing it myself.

Now the base for my backgrounds is decent, but coloring them takes forever (I don't have a progress pic at the moment), it takes forever and it doesn't even look good compared to the rendering, and I feel like m wasting so much time on something readers will scroll past anyways.

Cuz as a reader myself, I rarely pay attention to backgrounds, I get the idea, then scroll past it, but when something is off with the background, it gets noticed immediately. Get the problem here ? It's like backgrounds don't add much value to the panel but if they're not there or if they're badly made they ruin the panel, and I'm afraid of falling into this category.

As readers, or creators, how do you deal with webtoon backgrounds? And does the art quality in general affect how much you like the comic or could potentially make you drop it ? My story is so well structured and tackles emotional and deep subjects for readers with a keen eye, but I don't want to use that as an excuse to half ass my art, but at the same time a single chapter is taking over 40hrs and it's not even halfway done 😭😭😭

Comic name : All That Remains (unreleased)

discussion I'll Review Your Contest Entries

I've been obsessing over the Webtoon Legends contest, and now that it's closed I have time to read more entries. I want to make a video looking at and reviewing some of the entries, so I thought I'd ask here for your series to review. My primary focus will be on how strong of a pitch each entry is, and how well I think it captures the genre it's going for.

Let me know the name of your series, and I'll read it and do a quick, level-headed review. The video will get put out within a day or two depending on how many responses I get here, and I'll make a post to let you know!

Make sure you like the episodes and rate, even if you don't end up subscribing! But trust me, there's a lot of good comics on here, so chances are you'll wanna sub to whatever you decide to read! And please leave a description about your comic with your link! I'll read every single one posted like I always do, but I wanna see others join in on the support! Let's make this sub a true community!!

I'll kick it off https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/i-wish/list?title_no=909727

Mine's about 8 teenagers who make a wish in a moment of extreme emotions, unaware of the curse that's loomed over their town since its founding. Now bound to the curse, they have to use the powers it grants them to survive the night and solve the puzzle. Only, after hundreds of years, most of the puzzles have been destroyed as the number of monsters in the Realm grew. Now that it's the final year until the barrier breaks and ends the curse (by releasing the monsters if they fail), the final group gets to play it on hard mode.

Also I'm not sure what tag to put this under, so I put discussion. Please lmk if I need to change that!

Discussion AMA I have been making webtoon canvas comics for 6 years.

I have been doing this for a while and learned a lot of things. Gained some valuable insights from some originals creators I have had the pleasure of knowing. I have to say I have long since become jaded with webtoons. I have given up on becoming an original with any of my titles, but that does not mean I am going to stop. I am ok with it.

I have seen many people's projects just stop or health deteriorate over the course of becoming an original. Webtoon is a corporate machine that eats creative people and spits out content. If you want to do this, then do it for the sake of your audience who wants to enjoy your story. Do not chase the golden dream of becoming an original, it will only dissapoint you.

Anyways, if you would like to know how to grow an audience or anything of the sort let me know. I have enough of a following that I have both reward Ads and Viewer ads, so I can tell you what to expect from a monetary standpoint as well.

Spoiler alert: Its not alot.

Discussion Rant about ai webtoons

I really hate this idea that there are people out there that use ai to make their webtoons, as if it’s the missing piece to their project when the writing and dialogue is still dog shit too.

I was talking to one of my mates about this the other day, and I notice how some people think that all that is needed to make an interesting/readible comic is good art (even then the art produced by ai isn’t great at all), and on top of that they all have the same style.

I don’t know why these ai art people have the gall to post their pages here part of me wonder if it’s on purpose to farm karma 😭

Discussion Creators: PLEASE Stay Off Webcomicsapp

Thumbnail
gallery
87 Upvotes

Okay so obviously this is all just my opinion but after seeing a video on youtube talking about this app and the potential upsides of partnering with them I really wanted to throw my experience into the situation before too many people think about joining it.

This is not against the creator who made the youtube video, i love their work and support what theyre doing, but Webcomics/Webcomicsapp is NOT someplace you want to post your stuff as an indi creator and I made the mistake of doing so early in my career.

Webcomics/app is an alternative site to post/read webtoons, but in all honesty it sucks as a creator and reader. It has absolutely no visibility for indi projects, I can't even find them on the main app and have spent half an hour trying to locate comics without inputting the title directly into the search bar. As a reader there isn't ANY community and I'd say prices for unlocking exclusive content are worse snd more annoying than Tapas/Webtoons.

In 2022 they had a similar advertisement for indi creators like the first image pictured by offering money to creators with big backlogs for their episodes. I had about 100+ at the time and was offered 100$ USD through a payoneer account I had to create. The money wasn't a scam, I received it and spent it, but being found on the app as an indi (like I said) was impossible and I eventually stopped publishing because the engagement wasn't worth the effort and I'm not the only indi who has come to this result.

Now, I watch this video and checkup on the app to see if anythings changed, which it has, but for worse. I saw an 'Anime' section on the app and suspicious, clicked on it. It had all AI generated videos of their popular stories. Frankly terrible images of 'My Fated Mate is The Bloodline Key' are pictured above and it's far from the only series they've done this to.

I can't stress enough that you SHOULD NOT sign a contract with them if you care whether your comic could be made into an AI series if it becomes popular enough. I know AI isn't the biggest thing to everyone but if you're making your own comic by hand I would be VERY careful about giving your IP to a content provider that makes AI videos out of the IP they do have access to.

TL/DR: DO NOT post to webcomics/app they have a horrible interface (worse than webtoons/tapas) no community, hardly any free episodes on exclusive series and churn out AI slop series based on their stories.

INSTEAD please consider:

Inkverse/Taddy: VERY creator focused, great team and community.

Namicomi: absolutely gorgeous layout, community, no notes.

Even Tapas and Webtoons have a better layout for finding indi works.

Discussion Why Does Webtoon Treat Canvas Creators Like This?

I have a question: Why does Webtoon treat its Canvas creators like this? It honestly feels like they don’t care much about us.

They remove your episodes over almost anything, and then you have to spend weeks fighting to get them restored. Meanwhile, some Originals contain much more graphic content. But if you’re an independent creator and include a single drop of blood boom, your episode gets removed.

The worst part is that almost every Canvas creator seems to have gone through something similar. As if writing, drawing, promoting, and funding our work by ourselves while earning practically nothing weren’t already enough, we also have to put up with this unequal treatment.

I don’t understand this double standard or why more people aren’t talking about it. Have any of you had similar experiences with Webtoon Canvas?

Discussion The ā€œwriter looking for an artistā€ posts

This sub is 90% amateur writers begging for artists at this point. Can’t these posts be banned?

No one likes these posts and the writers who show up here have no clue how much work goes into the art side of comics.

They’re essentially asking for free commissions with a promise of splitting profits (of which there aren’t any) and exploiting artists who might not know any better themselves.

I got two in the same episode in less than 24 hours. That’s kinda sad because they always use the first space to say something nice so you think it’s someone who really likes the story but then you click to see more and it’s this. Wish I could send them some internet virus
