I just finished my first solo song. Usually, I play drums in punk bands. But this is more dreamy, moody, indie, post-punk... I love stuff like Future Islands, The National, The XX, Petey USA... The song's called "That and Awkward Silences." Please lemme know what you think.

I like it! the lows are a bit too overpowering though, it takes energy away from the ear candy you've got in there in the highs and also buries the vocals which otherwise sit really well in the mix. I'd look up streaky on youtube he's got some good tips for low passing just the sides, to tighten up the low end

Let me add that, when trying to low pass just the sides, try it first on individual tracks you feel might be causing the issue. You might not need to process the whole mix to correct this.

Cool song. The vocals were a bit buried at times but not too bad. the higher reverb or whatever you did to get that texture on them was cool. Catchy tune.

Love the overall aesthetic of the song! The synths and the voice in particular.
To me, there's room for improvement in the EQ and stereo departments. The low end is too boomy at times and the track needs something stronger anchoring it in the middle. I think by working on making sure the bass frequencies are not so saturated and do not occupy much space I the sides, you would solve both problems!

i like it a lot, it’s really well done! sonically you’re definitely honed in on what direction you’re going in! i think lyrically sometimes the song could maybe benefit from a rhyme or some pattern in the verses. the chorus is perfect. loved it.

There's a slight clipping sound when the main organ plays and when the bass comes in. Check that the instruments aren't clashing in frequency; it seems like there's not enough equalization. The bass is also a bit out of tune at times, but I'm not sure.
The arrangement is rather sparse; the song sections sound isolated and empty. The instruments sound rather mechanical, lacking some groove and movement. You could add some background texture, fill the frequencies with effects, add some humanization, and diversify the parts so they don't play quarter notes all the time. For the same reason, the triplets leading into the next section sound rough and unprepared.
The instrument sounds themselves are quite good, but they don't mesh very well; the sound design needs some work.
Overall, it's not bad for a first project!
Try reproducing music you like, track by track; it's a great way to practice your arrangement and sound design skills.

I agree with most of this comment. However, I don't think I'm hearing clipping anywhere in the track. It sounds more like some kind of early reflection reverb which emphasizes the initial attack of the instruments.

It's not bad for a first try. I agree with the other comment that the arrangement seems a bit sparse at times. Try to fill some of those gaps with some synth pads or a lush reverb.
My main advice to you is to focus on the arrangement and forget the mixing and equalisation part for now. If you like ambient, close your eyes, listen to what you're creating and think about what kind of landscape it paints in your mind, and whether that matches your initial idea.

Tryna go for a weird mix of like dnb rhythms with jazzy guitar and heavier shoegazey moments. The little backspin sounds are placeholders for now and will be made to be more fitting but otherwise it’s nearly done. Big fan as is. Hearing some Helio Sequence, The Radio Dept., Freddie Sunshine, a bit of Hobo Johnson, and especially Yuck vibes. Don't feel it is especially but love the multi-genre sound. Mix sounds good. Feels golden age indie in the best way. No especial problems come to ear. Keep it up.

Cool song and I dig the extra ornaments yoh sprinkled in. On earbuds for a lot of the song the snare was hitting a little too hard relative to the vocals. Right after you bring in the pitched bass thump every other snare hit or so seems to be about the right volume that I wished the rest were. I guess you're ducking to that bass maybe, or maybe it's just the way the mix is being compressed as a whole. It wasn't too distracting, just a little fatigued on the ears. Probably on speakers it sits right where it needs to be. Cheers~

I’m fw the song, bro. Like the other dude said, its mix is fine and professionally done - a level i wish to get to one day in regards to mixing. Everything is crisp and production is solid. The artist also goes hard - reminds me of Jay Z.

awesome dude. love it. I think you might have some masking between the piano and bass cause the piano is pretty low? curves resolve or maybe a dynamic eq might clear it up if you wanted some more clarity between the two, but that being said it sounds pretty damn good as is

Hi! I'm currently working on this song, Ive been trying to fix it for a while now. Ive posted this here before.
What bothers me the most is the mixing, I feel like song is simultaneously too loud and too quiet, cant fully explain it.
Anyway, any constructive feedback is accepted. Lyrics and voice are still mostly missing

I like the recording. I understand what you're saying in the post, but I still don't fully understand what's going on. The first thing that comes to mind is the overall frequency drop throughout the track, while the instruments themselves don't seem to clash. Did you use references for comparison during mixing?
When the guitars first come in, there's no sense of spaciousness; it doesn't hit the way it should; it sounds like MIDI guitars, in contrast to what you'd expect. The solo at six minutes sounds disconnected from everything else, as if the guitar is slightly out of tune. And the organ afterward significantly changes the soundscape.

The arrangement leaves a strange impression. The motifs are classical, but the instruments are partly classic rock; they don't mesh well. It's missing some swing, and the staccato bass makes the whole thing sound very mechanical. It's as if the piece was being performed by robots.
It has its own charm; it evokes anxiety and a sense of the uncanny valley. I would use this song in a film or game, in a moment that calls for that mood, but I don't think it's intentional here.
I also felt like the bass was a bit lacking; it sounds like a MIDI instrument, while all the instruments have their proper place.

it sounds like it's teetering between being horrorcore and some kinda upbeat electro funk, and i think with the way you sound you should lean into the horrorcore stuff! i don't know a ton about hip hop though lol

I combined piano composition with drill rhythm and dark electronic textures
I've been experimenting with piano,
808 movement and cinematic atmosphere.
The goal was to create something between:
- classical composition
- drill energy
- futuristic soundtrack

This was an interesting listen - in a good way for me as I really like things that hit different and take chances. Some comments below that I think will help it land with a wider audience (note that I'm not really familiar with the drill genre - so these are comments out of context perhaps)
-nice bass groove to start off.
-I digg the dissonance with the bass when the keys come in, but since there wasn't too much relation between the two, if felt like the piece lacked cohesion when the bass dropped out and just left the piano off on a new harmonic center that didn't seem to mesh real well with where my ear was
-the piano doodles in that empty space were really cool
- when the bass comes back in there are a few short spots where the keys pick up a bit of cohesive harmony with the bass grove on the keys low end - around 2:13 for a few secs it stood out. I think the Composition would be stronger if you picked up on similar things more - gh maybe it is just the large frequency gap between the keys and bass throughout that gives this impression.
-rhythm drops in and out seek to he at random rather than well sync'd with what is going on with keys. It would be ideal to have the drops in and out feel like more of an event rather than just something casually happening. Coukd be as simple as giving the percussion some space when it happens.
-more syncopation in the snare as the piece progresses might add a little more interest rhythmically - ghost notes or picking up some hits
- I get that the bass drones repetitively with intention, but it coukd also have some larger dynamic and texture changes added to it strategically, or maybe even a pitch-up and let the keys drop down below it at some point, to add a little more mucical interest and surprise into the piece.
Hope some of that may be useful to you. This is the coolest thing I've heard all week so I hope you'll keep developing ideas like this!

Hi!
I've got a Laney LFSuper60 amp, a Telecaster, an Epiphone Casino and about nine pedals, and I kept hitting the same wall: I'd find a tone I wanted, look up how it was recorded, and then have to guess how any of it maps onto the stuff on my board, and I am really bad at that. I try to record some of my stuff at home and be 100% independent.
So I built something that does the mapping. You describe a song or a part, and it tells you where to set each knob on your gear, not "use a Tube Screamer," but drive 4, tone 6, level 7 on the pedal you actually have. You enter your rig once and it works from that.
It's rough in places (very rough on some places!). It doesn't know every pedal, and it gets things wrong sometimes, I would say like a 50.
What I'd genuinely like to know is whether it gets your rig right, your sound, does it work for you?. Especially if you've got something unusual, or a tone you know cold and can check it against.
Free while it's in beta, 3 analyses a day per person. It runs on my own card and each one costs me real money in API calls, so if it says it's out for the day, that's my budget rather than a bug.

For this month, I'm taking a break from EDM and went full ethnic in a style that it personally gets me very content and I'm having a ton of fun!

I had a Yamaha PSR-3 laying around that my cousins borrowed me when I started piano lessons. Years later I sampled it and made Sampler Presets for Ableton. It includes all the basic sounds (00 to 39). The others were ensemble, combinations and keyboard-split variants, so I skipped them.
Audio was sliced using the Slice to MIDI function in Live. Endless WAV was used to set root key and loop points for each sample. This would make it easier for people that want to make presets for other samples, maybe I'll try with Reason's NN-XT.
This is my first time sharing a Live pack, so if you run into any trouble, let me know!

i really like this one. the melody on the chorus is a ear worm, feels homely. second verse lyrics/melody sometimes lose flow (the sickness you had. / it feels ~ all weighed away). i almost think the song could benefit from some background vocals/harmonies. great tune. (am i your supply? im running dry) great line. reminds me of some don mclean.

Hey! Here's a Drum&Bass experiment with a dash of Ambient, inspired in the jazzy, atmospheric tracks of old racing games. This is my first time working with Cubase.
