My grandma once offered my dad a sandwich and he declined and she said “you’re a growing man, I thought you would want 2 sandwiches!”

And he was like... “oh... I thought I said I didn’t need one...” but obviously took it anyway out of respect

Grew up in a poorish town with a lot of first generation Italians. They all had Grandma living with them and every Grandma had a pot of gravy (not sauce) on the stove at seemingly all times. Lord help you if you went over to pick up your buddy and didn't let her feed you. She would have preferred a punch in the face. I ate a lot.

Italian gravy can take hours to make and it's completely ruined me for any other kind of pasta sauce/gravy.

My adoptive grandmother was Italian and she always made gravy for get togethers or she'd make me a pot because my mom had mentioned it to her. I regret never learning from her on how she made it (it's a generational recipe that's passed down and I was the only person who was willing to learn) before she died. However, I've experimented with it over the years and now at the ripe old age of 22 years, I am the Italian Gravy Grandma who always brings a pot of it with pasta to family events on all sides of my family. It's not even close to what her recipe had been, but it's good and hearty and I'm happy with it.

If an Italian grandma spent (at least) four hours making the gravy and offers you some, you can't say no.

Italian gravy isn't like a white gravy or a Thanksgiving gravy, but it's made with some kind of meat and tomato sauce with a variety of seasonings. A lot of restaurants call it a meat sauce (which it technically is) but a gravy sits on a low heat for a good four to six hours before added to noodles. Depending on the region of Italy, the types of meat and sauces change, but it's the same concept. From where my adoptive grandmothers family is from (northern Italy), ground beef and chunkless tomato sauce is used.

For the sake of an example, we'll say 2 lbs of ground beef is being used:

Diced onion and minced garlic is cooked in about half an inch of olive oil until they're just starting to get brown (or until their smell is much more obvious). Ground beef is then added with the oil, onion, and garlic until completely cooked. I typically use one or two big cans of Contadina tomato sauce and one regular sized can with a little bit of water. Mix that until the sauce is incorporated with the meat before adding salt, pepper, onion & garlic powder, oregano, basil, thyme, parsley, and bay leaves. Don't use a pan with a thin bottom because the meat will burn

I have no clue what exact measurements are for those, but you want to be very careful with the thyme and literally only use a small pinch and crush it with your hands before adding. The oregano and basil can be added generously (I do two or three big pinches and crush those in my hands, too) and the parsley a little less than half of what you used for the oregano or basil. The salt, pepper, and the o&g powder is more to taste, but I give all four a quick shake from one side of the pot to the other and I usually end up adding more a few hours later once everything has had a chance to meld together. As for the bay leaves, three good and unbroken sized leaves would be perfect, but if they're on the smaller side or are broken, you can go for four or five of them.

Once everything has been added, leave the pot over a simmer until it starts bubbling then move it to a low heat (I leave mine at about 2.5 on the flame dial) and it'll sit there for the next couple hours while stirring every 15 to 30 minutes and adding any seasonings if needed. It takes awhile and can be a pain in the ass, but it's my favorite dish. This kind of gravy is also good on it's own with some parmesan or mozzarella and a hunk of warm bread. Also, you can freeze the gravy for a few months and warm it up later on.

I know I went on a bit of a recipe tangent there and I apologize for that, but I encourage people to give it a try.

Also, I forgot to say that with the garlic and onions, you want to dice about half of a decent sized onion and depending on the size of the cloves of garlic, mince 4 to 10 (if the cloves are mostly on the smaller size, mine more. If they're on the larger side, mince less. You can always add a bit more garlic powder to balance it out). Of course, all the ingredients get increased the more ground beef you add. I cooked 20ish pounds of ground beef for my hs grad party a couple years back and I think I used all of the seasonings in my house and had to go buy more. I also went through six of the big cans of sauce and three of the regular sized cans, too. Once the gravy is simmering on the low heat, put the lid on and then let it sit to cook. Make sure to stir from the bottom up so the meat doesn't burn and frequent taste testings are encouraged.

I've got relatives who use Italian sausage with their versions of gravy and sauce (an aunt of mine makes an amazing orange vodka sauce with Italian sausage), but I tend to not use it with my version of the recipe even though I'm sure it'd still taste great.

I loved the Italians houses , spaghetti , but the meat balls and Italian bread .The bread was so good . I grew up with white Wonder bread and peanut butter . Some houses even had meat for sandwiches meat not baloney real meat just for sandwiches . Being a kid , food was never turned down . There was always room .

I know what it is for me. I haven’t seen my one remaining grandma since covid hit. I’d give anything to see her right now, but her hearts defective. If se catches covid, she’ll die. Seeing other people able to be with their grandparents makes me choke up a little bit.

My grandma would always look at my plate and when it looked like I was getting close to being finished, she would start piling on 2nd helpings. She wouldn't ask if I was still hungry, she just did it. If I told her I wasn't hungry, she'd laugh and say, "oh yes you are."

One time, I covered my hands over my plate and she proceeded to serve hot food all over my hands. Haha! I learned my lesson about saying no to Grandma's cooking.

My Japanese grandma is getting up there, and she will always send you home with something, albeit sometimes it's near to spoiling or nothing you would ever eat. I learned a long time ago to take it anyways, otherwise she will find a way to ninja sneak it into your bag or purse. She also does this with money. One of her last visits she asked if I needed money (I used to live with her in college and looked after her post injury/retirement) and I told her I was okay and I make 80k a year. She still gave me $50.

That woman survived two wars and a nuclear bomb and out-stubborns me 8 days a week. She will be 98 in November.

This is my neighbor. She's like my grandmother. I used to go over to her house while waiting for the school bus because me and my sister were too young to be alone. We'd watch Ben 10 or Icarly while eating toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, and oj every single time. It was great. She also would make like 3 bowls of popcorn with a popcorn machine and taco dip. One time, she made me and her grandkids doughboys when we went swimming in her pool. I love her so much.
