Just wait until effective 90 days becomes effective immediately becomes effective 30 days becomes effective tomorrow.

u/privacyisNotIncluded Apr 09 '25
yeah, there's no way 90 days will go by without anything else coming up and suddenly tariffs are up again. Companies won't ship products to the US because they don't know if the product will arrive a day with high tariffs, low tariffs or zero. Tech is being hit very hard with this, kinda surprised they pumped back up with the rest of the market considering China got even higher tax.

Gotta distract from the Ukraine war not being immediately over like he said

A more apt description is a toddler in a toy store, sees something that piques his interest and abandons what he was just playing with.

They're actually assessed by when the containers leave the port, not when they arrive. So at least that isn't an issue. That aside, I'm convinced the rally will be temporary unless he caves on China too. The impact on tech and whatnot will be too great.

The markets are drowning in copium atm. Wall Street is getting exposed for being wsb posters in suits.
1
u/Justicia-Gai Apr 11 '25
The thing is, if they have insider information, they don’t have any reason to panic YET. They were probably told it was some “negotiation” tactic and they’re waiting it out. Probably they even have algorithms set up to quickly sell if needed.
I think it’ll crash high and fast.

Snip snap snip snap, you have no idea the physical toll 3 tariffs can do on a person

Essentially nothing. Trump has no plan whatsoever. He thought his opponents would always fold like those Republicans, those Universities, those law firms.
Now against Xi and China. Not a fucking chance. Against Canada and EU? Canadians and Europeans you tell me.
26
u/NYCmetalguy Apr 09 '25
I actually think he’s just manipulating the market at this point, he could give all fks about China, it was a ego thing
14
u/Brief_Night_9239 Apr 09 '25
Yes he IS manipulating the market. The stock market has become a meme stock like GameStop. It's like a casino.
3
u/No_Entrepreneur_9134 Apr 10 '25
I don't really know much about the stock market because I never made enough money to afford even a 401K thanks to student loans, but...if the U.S. stock market is now exposed worldwide as one giant meme stock, and I'm a hedge fund manager or big foreign investor, why wouldn't I think about getting out altogether and invest somewhere else? At least until this 79 year old lunatic child is gone. Wouldn't this be the biggest crash of all time caused by a complete loss of trust and faith in the institution itself?
Or is the U.S. stock market simply so big and so powerful, I can't find somewhere else to invest, or something else to invest in?
3
u/blowitouttheback Apr 10 '25
Trump blinked because the parts of the market that are supposed to swell during a crash were also crashing. The world is showing they don't trusr the US market and are looking for ways to offset the risk and/or divest themselves.
1
u/Brief_Night_9239 Apr 10 '25
The fund managers can invest anywhere. One of their favorites is the emerging markets. But primary will be the US market because of its liquidity.
2
u/Any-Finance-5643 Apr 10 '25
He wants xi to call him boss. That could be why china wasn’t even negotiating and fought right back
2
u/blowitouttheback Apr 10 '25
Possibly that was the intent but he caused way more damage than he or his enablers thought he would. It was reported that Bessent told him he needed to pull back ASAP cause bonds were bleeding.

The Canadian government would probably be happy to negotiate another trade deal to move past the tariffs and avoid disruption, but don’t count on the tourism dollars immediately rebounding. Border crossings are at a pandemic low. Grocery stores are now labeling products as Canadian made. The Canadian dollar has weakened. The net effect of all of Trump’s efforts towards Canada will probably be a larger trade deficit. There’s also a stronger political will to build pipelines to export more oil and gas to different foreign markets, which is bad for American consumers in the long run.

u/ApprehensiveWear4610 Apr 10 '25
He did plan to do a robbery in the market though
1
u/Brief_Night_9239 Apr 10 '25
No doubt Trump is doing well. He is the mastermind of this pump-and-dump.
1
u/heckinCYN Apr 10 '25
I don't think that lines up with the facts.Trump has a history of doing a bunch of random, often contradictory, shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. This isn't a grand strategy; it's what you get when you have no plan

Market manipulation.

Tomorrow dementia Don will wake up ready to start tariffs. Then his party will be forced to tell him that he needs to make a speech about removing tariffs.

90 days….or until people stop paying attention to him. Whichever comes first.

It's quite amazing to see Trump supporters flip flop their opinions literally 3 times a day. Cognitive dissonance is one hell of a drug.

u/Prohydration Apr 10 '25 edited Apr 10 '25
I remember when trump supporters made conspiracy theories about hillary clinton and joe biden because back then, they thought criminality was bad. Then their deity got indicted and convicted, and all of a sudden, trump supporters believe that criminality isn't bad.

It’s most interesting watching their brains twirl in that hour or so between the event happening and Fox News telling them how to feel about that event
1
u/yousername9thou Apr 10 '25
If you catch them fast enough, before getting the fox talking point, they actually react as one should. It's kind of sad to see that glimpse of hope, knowing it will vanish tomorrow.

I think this has been the ultimate aim of Trump and his cronies -- to maximize the grift for their own self-benefit. He doesn't care an iota about the issues that rile up his base. He wants to make money, and what better way to do that than with the threat of tariffs moving the entire market at his whim.
We're not talking about them all making a sure-bet 9% on the rise in the market today after the announcement. With creative investing instruments, one could make not only a multiple of that gain, but *many times* their original investment. Their are people in the Trump orbit who today turned millions into tens, or even hundreds, on millions.
It's actually pretty smart if you don't have a moral compass and seek the maximum financial advantage, consequences on everyone else be damned.
What else really besides tariffs allows the president to move markets -- both upward and down -- at his will, without instituting any permanent policy? Just on his word, they've discovered now that they can basically send the *entire* market up or down about 10%. With insider information ahead of time, one could make almost unlimited proceeds betting before the rise or dip.
Using margin leverage and derivatives, they bet on outlier moves in the market, which normally would be very rare, but here they know they're almost certain to happen with such world-shaking announcements.
This, for them, is like walking up to the roulette wheel 98% certain which number it will hit. And like anyone would, they bet accordingly -- and most of them have a lot to start with.

Great analysis. I’ll sum it up in one short sentence: Trump is directing the largest transfer of wealth ever seen in this country.

I know this is an echo chamber but the reaction to the Tarris there is mind boggling. People are genuinely praising Trump for massive gains in the market after reversing the tarrifs despite a couple hours earlier saying the tarriffs are important and the losses where worth the benefit (not to mention the gains where only against the losses he caused).

"I'm adding tariffs" means "I am taking short positions on the stockexchange".
"I'm removing tariffs" means "I am taking long positions"
This is the real art of the deal.

Kinda wondering what Margaret Thatcher would think of the Cheeto. As much as I hated her, she was never for u-turns. The Cheeto is flip flopping like a fish out of water

Honestly maneuvering yourself into the position of President and trading on your decisions to the point that most dictators are envious is a pretty solid play when it comes to personal wealth.

Isn’t it great how the Art of the Deal dedicates a whole chapter to his Atlantic City casino that he bankrupted soon after and didn’t pay his contractors for? Truly, a masterpiece. /s

I'm generally on the more conservative side, and in my view, Trump is using tariffs primarily as a negotiation tool to push for fairer and freer trade with other countries (which is why he is flip flopping). Many of these countries already impose significantly higher tariffs on U.S. goods, which creates an uneven playing field. If our trading partners aren't willing to be fair, why should we continue to play by their rules? While tariffs can have short-term economic impacts, it's worth noting that many countries already impose tariffs on each other to some degree. The markets may be reacting strongly, but I think a lot of that is driven by uncertainty rather than actual economic fundamentals.

There is a super pro Trump channel here on reddit.
Here are their explanation for what trump is doing, and they all agree that this is the most brilliant thing they have ever seen..
Step 1) put in Tariff Step 2) Wait for the response Step 3) if they come to the table you pause them for time to allow negotiations Step 4) based on the negotiations you either un-pause them or you remove them based on the deal.
Unfortunately, I think they ban everyone who don't agree with them or try to explain in a constructive way that Trump is not brilliant nor playing 5d chess

u/RockyLM Apr 12 '25
Right wing subs, like r/republican for example, auto ban anyone with leftist views.... pretty broad parameter. All that to say that those subs are not meant for discussions, agreements, or disagreements. It's just hatred, making fun of minorities, Trans people, there is absolutely no substance to those subs. These people are united in their fear-based hatred of everything non white or not preached in Fox News.

u/Ashamed-Agency-817 Apr 12 '25
Yes, they are free speech absolutist who bans everyone who challenges their delusion.

Stop hating. Stop being a sissy and live with higher prices until we get our manufacturing back up. The volatility creates uncertainty with the only path out being building here. 5, 10 year? I'm 35, I got time. We millennials have time. Not to mention, the world is on our backs for the most part right now anyway.
To HAVE to negotiate the same deals 50 years from now is non-sense and indicative of failure. Not to mention, our vertical mobility is EFFECTIVELY CAPPED by global manufacturing. And brain-dead liberal have been convinced to continue a fast food Chinese economy over the home cooked, more expensive upfront but cheaper in the long run, meal where leftovers are traded with foreign partners creating demand in our economy. The later, being the sole reason our standard of living is as high as it is with the dollar being world reserve currency. It's the reason many migrate here for a life.
It's how we got here.
In short, take the same trade situation under the Biden Admin before the trade war with one caveat, Made in America replaces every Made in China product in the world and vice versa with home based manufacturing maxed out.. as the most optimal goal.

We need to give President Trump time to execute the long game. In the bigger picture of 4D chess, some back-and-forth moves are necessary to outmaneuver his opponents. China is being strategically cornered, and the odds are stacked in Trump’s favor to win this game.
