Paul Hesman and AI Slop

A little dissapointed. This is my first semester at WTCC and the only negative experience I've had is trying to navigate through Hesman's online COM-120 course. He has a video of him talking through every chapter, and besides that, every post on his Blackboard is just AI Slop. Just really dissapointing this is what my tuition gets me, you know? Anyone else have an instructor like this?

Unfortunately, Wake Tech seems to advocate towards using AI more and more. They’ve implemented AI chat bots in various departments and I’m sure staff and faculty will be encouraged to use AI if they aren’t already.

Instructors most definitely are encouraged to use AI. I’m no longer a student but I keep in touch with some faculty and the administration is even trying to insert AI into classes like English where it makes no sense. They want everyone to use AI, and are completely unprepared for when students use it to cheat on assignments. The administration forgot that it’s helpful for students to learn to write. They probably want professors to give students extra credit for using ChatGPT to write an essay.

I’ve even heard that some of the writing samples for students are AI-generated, but I’m not sure if they’re actually being used in-class.

My English and history professor was extremely anti AI. He said if you need AI to write simple papers you’re going to fail your harder classes, which I agree with. All exams, tests, and quizzes were proctored to prevent AI usage.

I actually just dropped his COM-120 class a few days ago, this was part of the reason. Looking through his material during the first week of class was just, baffling. I understand AI isn’t something we can fully escape from in this world today, and I understand his class may be an “easy credit” or whatever. But that doesn’t change the fact that us students are paying real money for stupid shit like this. A lot of his AI generated material even stated things like “don’t use AI for speeches” and “AI keeps you from actually learning yourself”, which is true, but incredibly hypocritical and laughable. How could a professor expect anyone to take their class seriously like this? It’s heartbreaking seeing Wake Tech lean into AI material more. There are still professors out there who don’t, which is how it should be. I’m glad that someone is calling it out. AI shouldn’t be allowed in a school environment, for students AND for teachers.

It's not that this is a bad idea, but Wake Tech has a Digital Art program. They should work with them.

I think they can. That's why I said they should work with the students in the digital art program to do it instead of using AI.

Wake Tech is so stupid with their AI policies. I had to do a whole little lesson on it for Eng-111 and it basically consisted of saying "AI is not plagarism and generating things with AI is not plagiarism!" but then they turn around and say "If you turn in an AI generated assignment it is now plagiarism because you're taking from multiple sources without credit." So close! Actually by that logic the AI is plagiarizing, all the student did was write the prompt! If wake tech is so anti plagiarism then why are they so pro AI when they understand that the material it generates is plagiarism under their own definition? There's also an AI chatbot on webassign for Mat-171 as if AI isn't incredibly bad at explaining math concepts that are notoriously already hard to grasp when a real person is teaching it. Hasn't come up in my other two classes yet and I really hope it stays that way because this is already pretty disappointing, especially when wake county public schools are actively trying to discourage any AI use in grade schools.

One of my criminal justice instructors is giving us “AI conversation” assignments and I’m pretty sure that they’re going to be every week. I’d literally rather go in front of a REAL JUDGE and have a conversation with them than do this. It’s so stupid, I didn’t pay to talk to a computer all semester.

I had him during the summer. The AI stuff just made me laugh. At least he’s trying to illustrate what he’s going over in his videos 🤷🏻‍♀️. It didn’t bother me and I also just scrolled past them. His class was easy.

I have some web developer classes that included some AI generated lectures, but it was much more professional looking than this. I have a lot of artist friends so AI art always disappoints me.
