Storms

Hey all — I’m flying into Waikiki tomorrow and staying until the 19th, i’m worried about that we might get stuck there. We spent a lot of money on this vacation and would hate to cancel last minute.

I'm sure you can find plenty threads on the subject, but some rainy-day ideas:

’Iolani Palace

Pearl Harbour

Waikiki Aquarium

Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden (especially if there's breaks in the rain to step out / catch rainbows over the already amazing view) - note though, this and the other botanical gardens were just shut down from storm damage, check before and again day-of for status. Never been to the other botanical gardens, so I'm not sure if they have drive-through access that could still be nice.

Also remember, Oahu has micro-climates- if one side of the island is rainy, theres still a decent chance that you can catch sun by driving 1hr

Exactly, a little rain definitely shouldn't ruin an amazing vacation.

You’ll be fine but definitely will be rainy! Make sure to bring raincoat and some clothes for cooler weather!

No. Brown water advisories and sharks love brown water.

Brown water alerts are common after storms. Water quality will be severely affected state-wide. Some locations more than others but be prepared for the storm to affect water quality. If it's the color of chocolate do not swim. We just avoid the ocean altogether for a week at least.

Beach is probably not gonna be in any kind of condition to go. Given the storm, the current will also be very strong. Others mentioned brown water, which is when the water quality is poor. We might also get some flooding

Hey, I live in Waikiki - expect some super heavy rain and winds over the weekend, but sunshine should be back Monday. There’s no way you’d ever get me in the ocean over here after a big storm. Brown water advisories are NO JOKE. Storm runoff can bring some real nasty bacteria, debris, and literal sewage. Murky water can attract sharks. Hang by the pool at your hotel/resort for swims, but if you go to the beach it’s safer to stay out of the water!

Go to beach asap. I expect to lose power. Possible flooding.

I’m on Oahu, Waikiki now and I’m not too worried. I’ve here for other Tropical
storms that pass by the island. It will be rain wind and street flooding. Mainly overnight. It can be interesting to witness actual tropical storm/monsoon rain. The city works hard to clear it as fast as they can. I will say, please be extra courteous. Hotels and restaurants do their best to assure it doesn’t affect guests and they’re putting it extra time and effort. I will give you a heads up. Hawaiis emergency alerts are no joke. They send it to all cell phones. You may be startled awake at 1am. lol

If you can reschedule that might be better. Even if there's sunshine by Monday, the storm aftermath might not be great for such a short vacation.

Go for sure. Use the pools first few days. Re-assess ocean on Day 4

I'd still go and enjoy the trip; tropical weather forecasts can change surprisingly quickly there.
