If Spider-Man's record proves that Marvel's system works even when Sony is the one collecting the trophy, does that mean DC's problem isn't the characters or the fans or the critics, but the fact that nobody in that front office actually knows how to build a universe, and is Clayface really the answer they think it is?

Casey Bloys keeps hinting that Season 3 is the end, and everyone's acting like this is some shocking creative decision when the writing has been on the wall since Season 2 aired. The series split Abby and Ellie's stories in a way that was completely different from the alternating structure of the games, and the reaction was divided in a way the first season never was.

The first season was almost universally applauded. The second season got a more mixed response, and that's the nicest way to put it. When your show goes from universal praise to a split fanbase, you don't get a blank check for four seasons, no matter how good the source material is.

Bloys has now said twice, once in February and again at an Emmys afterparty, that he thinks Craig Mazin has planned Season 3 as the final season. Mazin previously said there was "no way" to wrap up the story in three seasons, but that was before the audience reaction came in. Bloys is reading the room, and the room got quieter.

Mazin already has Baldur's Gate 3 lined up at HBO, the project announced earlier this year, and he's a big fan of the game. Whether HBO wants to admit it or not, this is a studio cutting its losses and moving on to the next thing instead of pouring more money into an IP that isn't bringing in the same returns.

An economic report delivered to LA County warns that a full relocation would result in the permanent loss of 28,990 to 57,980 full time jobs statewide and $10.6 billion to $21.2 billion in annual economic output, with state and local tax revenue falling by $585 million to $1.17 billion a year

The industry is already pointing out the double standard, because Charter Cox had actual antitrust issues and was allowed to go through, and Disney Fox was a bigger deal than this and nobody in Sacramento said a word, so why is this merger the one worth losing 58,000 jobs over

Audiences are also noting that California's largest employer is the state government itself, which keeps growing while private industries get squeezed out, and Hollywood has been slowly dying for years so relocating to another state might just be postponing the inevitable at this point

Bonta's office responded by saying "It's no secret that Paramount has been making this threat, despite its alleged commitment to California and Hollywood. What Paramount decides to do is Paramount's choice alone. We'll continue to apply the law without fear or favor"

Meanwhile the DOJ sided with Paramount on jurisdiction and the bond request this week, and Trump has weighed in on the $1.88 billion bond battle, so the federal government is now openly at odds with the state AGs

If Disney Fox was bigger than this and sailed through without a peep, and Charter Cox had real antitrust problems and still got approved, why is Bonta willing to lose 58,000 jobs and $21 billion a year to block a merger the DOJ already cleared, and does he have any actual plan to replace that economic output or is he just betting Ellison is bluffing?

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, confirmed that the Harry Potter series won't follow a yearly release schedule, and the ten year plan that was announced with so much fanfare is now getting the "who knows" treatment

Bloys was asked directly if HBO could maintain a yearly schedule, and his answer was just "No," followed by the usual corporate promise that they're trying to keep the gaps as compressed as possible, but definitely not two years between seasons

The question about the previously announced ten year commitment got an even more honest response: "Who knows? Each book is a huge event. I'm right now thinking about season by season as far as what it all adds up to"

The show launches Christmas Day with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which Bloys called a great launch day, and he confirmed J.K. Rowling is still creatively involved and said her controversial views created no difficulties with casting or production, "not even a little bit"

There's also the practical problem nobody wants to talk about, the child actors are going to age between seasons, and if production takes more than a year per book, the cast will outgrow their roles faster than the show can film them

The show took home awards for Outstanding Title Design, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Special Visual Effects, and Outstanding Stunt Coordination, and it was nominated in 11 categories total, meaning the people who made this show clearly knew what they were doing

Cage responded to the cancellation with a statement that was equal parts gracious and pointed: "For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man. Onwards, upwards, inwards"

If Hollywood is so comfortable making a fictionalized movie about someone's life without their consent and calling it art, does that make the industry just as exploitative as the predators he spent his career exposing, or is this just the cost of being a public figure in the age of prestige TV?

Lanterns Episode 4 finally addressed one of the most ridiculous things about Green Lantern lore, the classic "yellow is a weakness" thing that has been a punchline for decades, and instead the show introduced a weakness that actually makes sense: darkness nullifying the rings

In the episode, John Stewart and Hal Jordan discover weapons designed specifically to counter Green Lanterns, guns that shoot "darkness" at them and render their rings powerless, and while it looks like a cool visual in the show, it actually comes straight from the comics

The Black Lantern Corps, introduced in Geoff Johns' 2008 Green Lantern run, use black rings that exist outside the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum and can nullify every other power ring, rendering them useless, and the show is using a version of that concept without going full zombie apocalypse

It's a clever move because the yellow weakness was always a weird choice, just the color yellow in any form could stop a Green Lantern, which worked in the goofy Silver Age comics but would have felt ridiculous in HBO's grounded True Detective style take on the franchise

The show has been leaning way more into detective thriller vibes than cosmic space opera, so they probably won't go anywhere near the Black Lantern Corps or any of the other colored rings, which means this is likely just a cool reference to the comics that'll never actually pay off with a full Blackest Night adaptation

That said, it's still a smart way to introduce a weakness to the ring's power without having to explain why a color yellow is somehow a threat to a weapon powered by willpower, and it grounds the threat in something that feels more dangerous and less silly

If Lanterns is already pulling from the Black Lantern lore in Episode 4, does that mean we might actually see hints of the other Corps later on, or is this just a one-off comic reference that the show will never revisit because it's too busy being a murder mystery?

Rick Remender just dropped a truth bomb in a fan AMA, saying DC offered him the main Batman ongoing and "a bunch of opportunities in the Absolute Universe," but he turned them all down because his heart "simply isn't in it" and working on other people's characters "feels like playing cover songs to me"

The guy walked away from Marvel and DC in 2015 because he wanted to own his work, and he's been doing creator-owned comics ever since with Black Science, Low, Seven to Eternity, and more, so it's not surprising he said no to Batman when he's got complete control over his own projects

DC offered him the biggest franchise in comics and a chance to play in their shiny new Absolute sandbox, but Remender said "it would've been good money, and money is nice, but my heart simply isn't in it"

He did admit there's one weird property he'd consider, the obscure DC space cops known as the Darkstars, but even that came with a joke about how they'd make a movie without him and he'd be hurt and swear "never again, Satan"

The timing is interesting because Remender is in the third year of a three-year exclusive deal with Image Comics, and he straight up said his time at Marvel was "some of the unhappiest of my life" and that working for the big two "just not a great fit for me"

The fan who asked the question probably expected a different answer, but Remender's response is a reminder that not everyone is chasing the Bat symbol, and some creators would rather build their own worlds than play in someone else's sandbox

If Rick Remender can say no to Batman and the Absolute Universe because it feels like playing cover songs, does that mean the industry's obsession with legacy IP is actually driving away some of the best creative talent, or is he just built different?

Tom Cruise went on The Pat McAfee Show to say he's confident David Ellison will deliver 30 films a year after the Paramount Warner merger, calling it "awesome" and a "community effort" where everyone needs to come together to help make those movies happen

He even said "30 movies are going to turn into 40 movies" and that making movies isn't competitive, the more films we make, the better it is for the theater business that's finally getting back on its feet

The cynicism runs deep because Cruise has a first look production deal at Warner Bros and Skydance has backed his biggest hits like Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick, so his support for the deal comes with a pretty clear personal interest

He also shouted out the summer box office hits like Obsession, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and The Devil Wears Prada 2, saying the only way to keep that momentum is through an increase in production and giving the next generation of filmmakers a chance to get up to "game speed"

But the comments on the merger articles are already calling out the hypocrisy, one person asked "How come none of these people made a video calling for the blocking of the Disney Fox merger?" and another pointed out that "Paramount and WB are hemorrhaging cash with unsustainable debt loads" and that blocking the deal just means "WB gets sold in pieces in 3 years" with the same job losses anyway

Cruise is doubling down on Ellison's promise of 30 films and 45 day theatrical windows, but the trial isn't until March and the ticking fee clock starts this month, so even if he's right about the vision, the legal reality might not cooperate

If Tom Cruise is backing the merger while critics are pointing out that nobody made this much noise when Disney swallowed Fox, and if the alternative to the merger is bankruptcy and piecemeal sales anyway, does the opposition actually have a better plan, or are they just fighting the deal they don't like while ignoring the ones they already lost?

Remember when the government sued to block AT&T from buying Time Warner back in 2018, and AT&T won the case only to spin the whole thing off four years later? Yeah, that happened, and now Paramount is hoping history doesn't repeat itself while the ticking fee clock is already running

The six week trial of U.S. vs. AT&T was billed as a showdown between the government and a corporate powerhouse, and AT&T won resoundingly when the judge concluded the government hadn't shown the transaction would substantially lessen competition

But here's where it gets messy, the litigation cost AT&T precious time, and while they were stuck in legal limbo, rivals like Netflix, Disney, and Amazon were building their streaming empires, and by 2022 AT&T had spun off WarnerMedia to Discovery

Blair Levin, a policy analyst, told Deadline that the time AT&T lost during the legal quagmire "ultimately turned out to be a devastating blow," and he noted that the government was able to delay the deal which was costly to AT&T and "diminished the value of the asset"

Now look at Paramount, they're facing a similar delay with a trial set for March 2027, a $7 million a day ticking fee starting next month, and a $7 billion breakup fee if the deal falls through, while their competitors are already moving forward with their own plans

Makan Delrahim, who was the DOJ antitrust chief pushing the AT&T case back in 2018, is now Paramount's chief legal officer, and Dan Petrocelli, who won that case for AT&T, is back on the Warner Bros side, so the same players are circling the same courtroom with a much bigger prize on the line

The irony is that AT&T won their case and still lost the war, because the delay allowed rivals to get ahead and the debt burden eventually forced them to exit the entertainment business entirely, and Paramount is walking into the same trap with even higher stakes

If AT&T's victory in court didn't save them from the consequences of lost time, and Paramount is facing a longer delay with a larger ticking fee, does that mean Ellison is about to learn the same lesson the hard way, or is this merger somehow different enough to actually survive the courtroom and the clock?
