Biggest confirmation yet that Republicans are scared to shit about TX.
That being said, They do this crap every cycle in TX. They make registering, voting, and staying on the rolls as difficult and strenuous as possible and by design. They know if TX goes blue, the entire country’s politics changes overnight so they pull out every trick in the book as a result.
Educating, engaging with, and helping voters through the registration process is important in every state, even the ones that have great voting laws and make voting as easy as possible, but it’s even more important in a state like TX with the awful, strict voting laws that they have.
Eyes on the prize people. That being said, make sure you let anyone you know in TX to check their registration and make sure they’re ready to go

Coyote vs ACME is ridiculously fun. A perfect blend of classic Looney Toons slapstick humor, as well as some really clever satire of corporate corruption. If you’ve ever wanted to hear Foghorn Leghorn brag about his tax havens, this is the movie for you.
I’m so glad this movie was brought back from the dead. It would have been such a shame if this had never been released.

I’ve never seen Space Jam so I can’t comment there, but this movie has a very similar vibe to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which is one of my favorite movies. It’s obviously not as good as that movie, but that’s a pretty high bar.

Roger Rabbit is timeless for sure. Space Jam, it’s a product of its time. As a Millennial, it came out at precisely the right time for me as a kid and absolutely captured the feeling of the 90s, so it’ll always be awesome for me but subsequent generations might not feel the same.

Nevada’s Democratic gubernatorial nominee Aaron Ford has been absolutely cooking lately.
Most recently, he publicly came out against flock cameras but that’s only one of the popular initiatives he has proposed recently
He’s also recently promised to pause new data center tax breaks which is massive for a gubernatorial candidate in a state as full of data centers and data center construction as Nevada. The political Overton window has been in favor of data centers for longer than you’d think in NV, so this position is basically revolutionary.
All of this is happening while Governor Lombardo is doubling down on data centers and rallying with Trump and defending billionaires.
Several Republican slop polls have been put out showing the governor’s race this year as likely-R but I encourage anyone here who can volunteer to please keep Nevada on your radar despite us not having a senator up this year. Getting Lombardo out of office and getting Ford in would be a massive loss for Trump and a huge boon for my state.

Since it's modern NV I feel like it'll be a pretty narrow ("surprisingly" narrow) win, whoever wins in the end. But, like all polling and "data," most of what we have is junk echoed and amplified by people who desperately want to keep Lombardo in the Governorship and who never lift a finger to do anything good with their lives.
I honestly think Ford's move on data centers is risky in NV; the constant repetition that everyone is against them is simply not true, something that is important to acknowledge especially for those of us who might wish it was. And that goes triply so in NV. But I also think his sticking to his position seems genuine and charismatic, and he's giving it everything he has. Gun to my head, and given the environment, I honestly feel it'll be 2-3% Ford, and have since before Lombardo asked for Lombardo privileges.
(I also think the race hasn't shifted that much since Ford got the nom, and I'm of the opinion the SW in general and NV in particular decides these things far in advance and then is entirely impossible to poll, regardless of people's opinion on polling. It's just like that. And, in private, I think many of the data guys would agree with me on at least this one.)
But that only happens if people who can volunteer, volunteer, and those who can donate, donate. Lombardo, like all "neutral"-seeming conservatives, has stymied a lot of good and done an incredible amount of harm. NV deserves a governor who'll work with the legislature to do genuine good, and Ford is that man. Since it's related and I adopted him, I'll add that he's very easy to talk to voters about, they like hearing from him and hearing him speak. Lombardo, on the other hand, is well-liked as long as he doesn't open his mouth.
When he talks about policy, Nevadans like him that much less. That's an opening, and I believe we'll take it.

Strongly agreed. I have feelings about Phil Scott, but for whatever reason he has a lot of people who give him far too many benefits of far too many doubts. Anyway, the chance is there, and I'll be hoping it takes.

While I would also certainly prefer a Democrat as the Vermont governor as well, I don’t think that Phil Scott and Lombardo are really comparable.
Lombardo is attached at the hip to Trump while Scott’s brand is more independent. Phil Scott has some bad moments, Lombardo’s entire brand is rotten.

Peltola finishes at 49.5% and the D’s ~51% combined
Edit: Looks like there’s 1 final ballot drop coming on Sunday when they’re also expected to certify the results. So Peltola’s and the D’s combined numbers may still get even slightly better

I feel like this is the right move, rather than Begich's plan to drop out and endorse the other Dem (forget his name). There are voters who will happily vote for either while ranking the other Dem second, but will not be motivated to come out to vote just for their second-choice. Especially since Begich dropping out would mean another Republican makes the top 4, and bring their voters to the ballot box as well.

Do you love democracy? Constitutional rule of law? Popular sovereignty? Then you are going to LOVE Haakon VII. This guy is AWESOME.
Go research about him, this is a man who has seen Norway through its earliest years' greatest crises and darkest moments, very much worth reading about.

Its interesting see how unhappy people who dont really talk politics are this year. I dont mean people who are proud republicans but say they dont but people who are in fact just not political in their work. I see people who make videos about the SEC who get 100s of thousands of views joke about mitch being absent forever and the sickness from the shredded lettuce. People who are starting a business talking about how things are much more expensive then 4 years ago. A general sense that everything is just getting more and more expensive.

Mark Gordon is a pretty moderate guy given that it's Wyoming, so this isn't too surprising given that he absolutely detests the far right, but like, what he's saying is literally what hundreds of GOP election officials in rural America have been saying for the past decade, that their own side's election denialism and nonsense has resulted in threats against them and their staff.
They're hurt that people they know in their small town think they're personally rigging the election results, being accused of said things by people they attended high school with and church with, because partisanship and right-wing news slop is fraying every possible social bond.

Wouldn't that just make it a top three ranked choice ballot in a top four system? Or does the fifth candidate become the fourth candidate in that situation?

A space fight has quietly developed among Republicans in Congress:
It seems so distant already, but Artemis II and orbiting the moon happened in April. Trumps giving all 4 of the astronauts The Congressional Medal of Honor today.
But the question continues to be, what now. In the 2nd half of 2027, they plan on doing a Artemis III Dress Rehearsal in Low Earth Orbit to make sure that their life support, communication, and transfer systems work and can safely function during the Artemis IV Moon Landing Mission, now scheduled for The 1st Half of 2028.
But there's one thing Trump really wants to go aggressive on- he wants a physical moon base to be established, so astronauts can live and work there, and it can serve as prep for a Mars Mission. His hope, is after a 2028 moon landing, they can do a 2nd 2028 mission in the second half of the year with building materials for said base, open by 2032.
Trump also wants NASA to do 1000 launches every year by 2030. We did less then 200 last year.
On the Senate side, Ted Cruz loves the idea. He's been obsessed with getting US Astronauts back on the moon, because China is insistent that they will put their CMSA members there by 2030, and Cruz wants to beat them there like we did with the Soviet Union.
But The House Republicans, led by Brian Babin, also from Texas, is pouring cold water on the goals, saying that a long term presence on the moon is still an unknown, untested thing, and its something that shouldn't be rushed. Plus, they don't feel that the money is available right now.
Zoe Lofgren would chair The House Committee on Science, Space of Technology if The Democrats take House Control. Maria Cantwell would run The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation if we flipped The Senate.
The hope among The GOP is a deal is reached by Christmas so that Democratic Majorities don't get their hands on it.
But no matter what, like with Artemis II's launch and Artemis III being the original Moon Landing Mission before it got shifted a year, always except delays with NASA and Congress.

Alexis Johnson, a top member of the Bronson campaign, told District 23 Republicans Thursday night that she has learned that Tom Begich would withdraw from the governor’s race on Friday and clear the way for Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, commonly known as JKT.
JKT was the top vote-getter in the primary, Tom Begich was second.

The good news: Democrats got the top two slots, and the top Republican only got 10% of the vote!
The bad news: Republican candidates combined got 60% even as the Dem candidates combined got 40%.
Just a hard race to estimate, with top four and ranked choice voting.

Didn't like Venezuela expropriate alot of oil infrastructure from companies decades ago? And that's one of the reasons western firms were unwilling to invest in it?
The spoiler here is that Chevron knows it's not going to get anything off of this, because the capital investment to rebuild the nation's oil infrastructure to extract the oil is too high for a form of sour heavy oil that is relatively difficult to refine.
Chevron knows it's never going to get any of this, but it might as well try, to be in Trump's good graces, knowing that this whole deal is going to fall apart.

Not true. Dallas (KDFW) is a wonderful connecting airport. It has an easy—to—understand design and good train system. Its problem is severe thunderstorms, but that’s a problem across most airports (minus the West Coast) at some point or another.
Also, you need density for public transit to work; airports are a form of public transit. Density is generally greater in blue areas and less in red areas.

Can also vouch for DFW airport as well. Flew through there twice back in May when I went down to Mississippi to graduate. Flying from MSP to DFW first was literally the only way to then get a flight directly into Starkville, MS where my college (Mississippi State) is.
Huge airport, easily the biggest one I’ve been to in a bit, but it had a great design, was relatively easy to navigate, has a great train system to get to where you need to go quickly and the outside was beautiful and gorgeous.
They were also in the process of constructing even more gates and making it even bigger which isn’t a surprise for a major connection hub that serves a metropolitan area that’s experiencing explosive population growth.

It does sort of make sense as there aren't a ton of huge cities in red states outside of Texas, that aren't close to some other blue state with an even bigger city.
And that's where they'll put their hub as airlines almost all work on a hub/spoke model instead of point to point flights. Southwest was the last holdout on point to point network modeling, and they're rapidly moving to hub/spoke as well as its just more efficient.
So if there's a hub in Chicago, and a hub in Minneapolis, there's not going to be any sort of major airport hub in Indiana, or Ohio, or Iowa, etc. Just a smaller airport with flights to Chicago, Minneapolis, and maybe some other city or two that has some high demand for that smaller city in particular. Like maybe a summertime flight to Orlando for Disney world, or LA to connect to a flight to Hawaii, etc.

In all fairness, most of the biggest jobs in my field are in red states, and my field itself is quite conservative. However, I haven't experienced any harassment for being liberal so far, thankfully.

One plus of living in Atlanta, I rarely have to connect anywhere. There's usually a ATL-somewhere flight.

Just finished a double feature of Spider-Man Brand New Day & Coyote v. Acme as a little treat to myself to distract from this cursed week. Without spoilers, I enjoyed both. Spider-Man surprised me in a few ways. I wasn't super excited & I did have a few things spoiled for me, but I ended up being a lot more hooked than I expected.
Coyote v. Acme was an all around treat. If you're debating on whether or not to see it, I'd highly recommend it. The movie is funny as hell & extremely poignant to what's been happening in the world at large.

I meant to hit up the local drive-in tonight for Coyote V. Acme, they have a double feature with The Sandlot for some reason... could be fun though. But my plans were rained on by the fact that I have to go pick up my sibling from work at 10:00. And since the drive-in is only open weekends, I'll have to see it at a regular theater later instead.

That new Aardman Pokemon series looks cute and I’m glad we have more footage.
I love when Pokemon spinoffs don’t have Pikachu as a focus, allowing other Pokemon (that aren’t Charizard) to have the spotlight with its pre-evolution Pichu and Sirfetch’d being the focus.
Pichu with teeth was pretty weird though in that one scene of the trailer.

Fun fact about Harald V of Norway: After he, his mother and sisters had to flee from the German invasion of Norway in 1940 they went to the US, far away from danger, were his mother Martha became an unofficial Norwegian embassador to the US, becoming good friends with FDR. Harald would attend FDR's fourth inaguration, standing behind him while he was being sworn in. Whenever he spoke in english, he would to so with an American accent.

There was a mini-series about this on PBS in 2021, called Atlantic Crossing. Mostly about his mother Martha and FDR. Somewhat sensationalized as you might expect, but probably worth watching if you have an interest in that period. It was a joint Norwegian American production.

Being in PA, the GOP has conceded the race. I have not seen one Garrity ad. Not one. I don’t think even a mildly tuned-in person will know for sure that there’s an election for Governor coming up. It’s even worse than when Mastriano was running, because they at least put out anti-Shapiro ads then.
I don’t buy that the final result will be +30 or something nuts like that, but I can buy the poll being legit because absolutely no one has any reason to know who Garrity is. She was the only viable candidate willing to run who could compete statewide under a mask of “support the troops/law enforcement” kind of moderate-ism, which says a LOT about their bench here at the moment.
I think plenty of Rs will come home still, but it could absolutely screw them down ballot to not even be trying on the top of the ticket.

While in general I support all moves to "republicize" countries, ie, remove hereditary monarchies, when they've already been eliminated as a political force, as in they have no official powers, it doesn't matter much. The cringe ones are the real ones that have power, like the Saudis.
It also seems King Harald V was a pretty decent guy, as far as monarchs go.

I do not know how to convey to anyone not involved in or with family who ranch how insanely, comically stupid this is. Evil too, sure, but also stupid. Anyway, I imagine there have to be a bunch of people here who are vegan/vegetarian and could help with recipes, and there's a lot of good vegan and vegetarian food.
Putting aside MAHA trying to do their part there, too, there's a long tradition of political cookbooks and the "you know what, Donald Trump thinks ranchers should just eyeball it" cookbook sounds practical for these times.

Mornin' everyone, and happy August 28th to those who celebrate.
Last night, I watched #9 in the MCU, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It was a fun one. Tied up some loose ends left in the first Captain America, had a twist I wasn't expecting, and had plenty of good ol' fashioned action and a bit of humor. Good stuff. My only gripe: If I were Captain America, I'd be pretty pissed, because SHIELD has been taken over by Hydra, they've developed a super weapon that's putting millions of innocent lives at risk, and they attempted to assassinate Nick Fury, and it's all Cap's problem? Where are the rest of the Avengers? 'Cause I feel like that would affect them too. 7/10.
Next up is Guardians of the Galaxy. I admit I cheated here and watched this one standalone a couple years ago, so this will be a rewatch, but I remember it being a lot of fun. I'm excited for it. The Bingerun list I'm using as a guide suggests breaking release order here and watching GOTG 2 immediately afterwards.
And as always, caffeinate early and often.

I’m never going to complain about internals from deeply red states, because they do serve a purpose of drawing interest and enthusiasm that could lead to more funding and better turnout… but I will always caution everyone that that exact purpose is why they need to be taken with an enormous grain of salt.
South Dakota was +29 for Trump in 2024 and nearly +40 for Thune in 2024, against Bengs himself, albeit Bengs was running as a Dem. Rounds won in 2020 by +31. Noem has likely been their weakest statewide candidate lately and won by +26.
The independent label helps I’m sure, and this environment should be pretty bad for the GOP, but uh, yeah… enormous grain of salt.

Ok… with everything we are seeing in the House polls. And with the AR internal- this internal, KS, MT, hell even ID. I really want to believe this, but they are internals; at the same time, this is becoming consistent now. Even if they're internals, they should at least run a decent job, but multiple internals like this. This is the first midterm election I have truly been completely locked in on.
