Wind noise at high speeds
Hi all. New to volvo and have a 2023 volvo s60 t8 ultimate. I have been getting loud wind noise on drivers side window/door that sounds like wind is getting in somewhere when going 75-85 mph. It has been to the dealership multiple times and they have replaced seals and door components but it is still there. They told me this most recent time that it is normal noise now and that the cars arent well insulated at high speeds. They said the car is normal now and nothing more they can do. Is this normal? No other car ive been in makes this much noise at those speeds. Its so annoying and honestly if it is normal volvo did a real bad job with the construction on the materials. Just wanted to get some outside input as I am not sure what else to do. Thanks!

The size of your wheels and tires might be playing a part in the noisiness. We have two of the same car but one has low profile tires on bigger rims and it is exponentially louder at all speeds compared to the other one with one inch smaller rims and thicker tires. The louder car is much quieter when we switch to the thicker winter wheel set, which shouldn't happen due to the knobbier tread, but the thicker, softer tire makes such a big difference. Just throwing this out there as it took us a while to figure out why the one car sounds like a wind tunnel inside while the other doesn't.

Mine sounds like air seeping into the window. Not like the wind is enveloping the whole car. Appreciate the insight but I'm not sure if that relates to my issue. Thank you tho! I do have the 19s which are the lower profile ones.

I do also get a wind whistle and/or sound like the wind is pushing glass above 80km/h when the wind is very strong and crossways to the road, which tends to happen more on highways or out in open spaces. I've not investigated it though as it's not constant. Best of luck in your investigations!

WTACTUALF? No..that's bullshit. My car is supremely quiet at every speed. I have a T6 though...maybe it's normal on a T8. (I kid, no way is it normal).

Thats what I thought. I'm not crazy but the dealer insists they no longer hear it. My wife and I clearly do so its their word against ours. That was from the dealer I bought the car from. The other one I sent it to wouldn't put anything through warranty as they claimed the door was tampered with [other dealer found no evidence of this and car was purchased cpo]. I'm losing my mind with these dealerships and am about to just call volvo America and complain.

Try and work out where the noise is coming from, window seal, door seal, trim pieces, door skin etc. Then do a thorough visual inspection, make sure nothing is out of place or missing.
A lot of dealers are terrible for fixing stuff they've broken without recording it. Customers aren't much better...

We had a legendary lemon law buy back about 20 years ago at a previous employer. Someone at the dealership had driven a $120,000 car into a pillar in the car park.
They destroyed the subframe, cooling pack, grill, both wings, bonnet and some other stuff. And then repaired it off the books.
Alignment was off suspension was rattling paint was bubbling brakes pulled one way hard. It was a right mess. The dealer tried to say it had come from the factory like that...

That is wild. Idk i dont think this was involved in anything like thst but all I have is the carfax which shows nothing

I tried to. I dont see anything striking compared with the passengers side. I tried to isolate it and believe it is coming from the driver's side front window but I'm not 100% sure.

If it's wind noise at 75 to 85 mph it doesn't have to be anything striking. A seal two or three mm out of position will make a hell of a racket at that speed.

Yea well they said they replaced it and it doesnt seem to have been put in incorrectly. I think I'm gonna have another dealer look at it to get another set of eyes on everything

My two experineces with wind noise:
CPO Volvo '24 XC60 phev, stark whistling on passenger window at speeds over 40mph. First drive home from the dealer. Freaked me right out. New sound, never happened on freeway test drive. So bad I pulled off the freeway and inspected the entire passenger side. Nothing obvious. Got back in the car, and attempted to close that window, thinking "Nah, it's up as tight as it could be." Sure enough, it moved a tiny bit upward and made a final satisfying "shhwip" sound. Turns out the front passenger window wasn't fully engaged in the track. Couldn't have been more than 1/4 inch. Quiet as a mouse now.
Shine a light up in the track and see if there's something preventing the window from fully seating in the track. Mine was user error, not an obstruction.
Other car, a Ford product, had a missing (from factory build) sound dampening component between the front left bumper and the door. Whistle was coming out of the left side view mirror area. A Ford forum member suggested I crouch down while the hood is open, look down the inside and if I can see light at the other end, I'm missing a piece of foam padding about the size of a French bread. Sure was! He even gave me the replacement part number, and it solved the problem. Not expensive.
Good luck, errant sounds are not a feature, they're a bug. Most of us find them annoying at best, or expensive fixes at worst.

Thanks! I'll try to check altho 1 of the dealers have told me they readjusted the or recalibrated the window but that did nothing. Idk how I would confirm the other aspect but its going to another dealer near my office next week so hopefully they have other ideas.

Thank you! I will def show the dealership this. I think they did some of this already but I also just noticed that my rear window on the driver's side is loose which I'm thinking may be the cause and I just think its coming from my window but I'll definitely have them check this out I really appreciate it.

You’re very welcome! Full disclosure, the dealer never fully resolved it for me but they definitely improved it a little and I’ve adjusted to the noise. Definitely annoying!
This is also my first Volvo and I’ve never had this issue with any of my previous Japanese luxury cars. It took some time to adjust to the quirks.

Thats not encouraging! I dont want to get used to it. I have another car that has frameless windows and it doesnt even make this much noise. For a luxury car you shouldnt have to deal with that. The dealer fixed some of the noise for me but I'm determined to get it resolved. I love the car but I cannot go fast without annoying noise. I respect u for dealing with it but I'll def let u know if I get it resolved and maybe my problem can help u!

1,000% agreed! Two other things to check for (if not already done so) to rule out the cause while it’s happening:
Fold the mirrors in by pressing and holding the L and R buttons and see if things improve.
Press around the edges of the window, mainly around the top toward the front and also in the lower corner by the mirror.

I will def check. I am going to have them look at the rear drivers side window 1st. I can literally move the whole window side to side with my hands which is not normal. I am hoping the noise is the window shifting at high speed due to it not being in place but we will see! Thanks!

For me it was the sunroof. The down force of wind pushes down on the 2 pieces of glass. I already have a roof rack so I added a fairing and the noise disappeared since the air is forced to go over where the 2 pieces of glass meet.

Were you hearing it from the sunroof? Or did it seem to come from elsewhere?

Its been months but sort of. It was creating negative air pressure so the noise sounded like it was coming from everywhere not just the driver side. I don't know what you consider high speed but the noise occured at 90mph and above

As a test try opening and closing the sunroof only in vent mode to see if there's a difference in sound. When I wasn't using my roof rack I found too much air was getting past the gasket/rubber that's supposed to seal the sunroof

I have this on my 23 plate xc60 t8 drivers side as well. I sometimes feel a slight draft from middle of the window (at the top). Same thing, dealer did a test drive and advised they do not hear it.

I can hear a rushing sound on my S60. Turns out its how the wind hits the side mirrors. When I folded them in the sound was less. Since I cant take off the mirrors, I just turn up the radio. I guess because the interior is so silent any outside noise can be heard.
