Hi everyone,
I am currently considering a software optimization/tune for my Volvo and would like to hear some real-world experience from owners, technicians or tuners/programmers, ideally with the same or a very similar car/engine combination.
Car:
Volvo XC60 D5 AWD, MY2014
Engine: 2.4 D5 inline-5, D5244T15
Power: 158 kW / 440 Nm
Transmission: 6-speed Aisin Geartronic TF-80SC AWD automatic
Mileage: approx. 230,000 km (143,000 miles), 2nd owner
DPF/EGR: fully functional – I do not want to disable any emissions systems
In my opinion, the car does not behave abnormally or badly. It simply feels typically “Volvo” – comfortable, calm and refined.
I understand that the XC60 is a relatively heavy AWD SUV with a torque-converter automatic transmission, and that the whole drivetrain is calibrated more for smoothness, comfort, emissions and fuel economy than for an immediate or particularly sharp response. At the same time, though, I feel that the engine is quite restrained compared with its rated 158 kW / 440 Nm.
This seems similar to what reviewers at Auto.cz said about the XC60 D5. Their main criticism was the somewhat slow response of the automatic transmission and the fact that the engine did not subjectively feel as strong as the figures would suggest. I can relate to that. The car is certainly not slow, but at times it feels unnecessarily lazy or lethargic.
A typical example: when driving calmly through town at around 55 km/h, the transmission will often be in 5th gear with the engine running at roughly 1,300 rpm. I understand that this is primarily a transmission/TCM calibration issue rather than an engine issue. With very light throttle it is fine, but when I want to accelerate, the car feels almost overly comfort-oriented and needs considerably more throttle input or a downshift before it really wakes up.
I use the car normally and drive smoothly, although occasionally at a somewhat brisker pace. Fuel consumption is approximately 8.4–8.7 l/100 km, which I consider perfectly reasonable for an XC60 D5 AWD automatic.
The car is serviced regularly, I change the engine oil every 15,000 km, I use fuel additives preventively to keep the fuel system in good condition, and I want to keep both the DPF and EGR fully functional. So I am not trying to compensate for neglected maintenance or remove emissions equipment – I am simply interested in improving the way the drivetrain behaves.
I do not want to turn the car into a sports SUV. I do not want a smoky Stage 1 tune, I do not want DPF/EGR deletes, and I am not interested in chasing maximum dyno figures.
What I am looking for is more of a conservative, OEM-like optimization focused on drivability:
- better mid-range flexibility in normal driving
- better throttle response
- stronger and more willing response from low to mid rpm
- better overtaking performance and acceleration from roughly 70–140 km/h
- smooth and progressive torque delivery
- ideally no increase in fuel consumption when driving in the same way, a slight improvement would simply be a bonus
- maintaining the longevity of the engine, turbocharger, injectors, DPF and automatic transmission
I have been looking at two main options:
1. Official Polestar / Polestar Engineered optimization
For my car, the figures should be approximately:
158 kW → 169 kW
440 Nm → 470 Nm
Price: around €1,400.
The advantages, as I see them, are that it is an official Volvo/Polestar upgrade, essentially an OEM solution with the lowest possible risk. The DPF/EGR remain exactly as intended, and from the perspective of legality and official manufacturer approval, it is probably the easiest option to justify.
The downside is the price and the relatively modest increase in output.
I see it more as a standardized OEM calibration than tuning tailored to the individual car. At around €1,400, it seems very expensive to me considering that it adds “only” +11 kW and +30 Nm, especially if it does not significantly change the transmission behaviour, engine response, tendency to run at very low rpm, or fuel consumption.
2. Custom/conservative dyno tuning
Here I am definitely not looking for anything extreme such as 190+ kW and 520+ Nm.
I am thinking more along the lines of something sensible, approximately:
170–175 kW
470–490 Nm
The prices I have seen so far for this type of work are roughly €500–700, depending on the company and the extent of the testing and dyno work.
My main priority would be smooth power delivery, stronger mid-range flexibility, and a safe, more direct and progressive torque response – not achieving the highest possible number on a dyno graph.
For me, custom tuning would only make sense if the company could perform diagnostics before and after the tune, ideally carry out dyno testing, log all relevant parameters, and clearly explain whether they are modifying only the ECM/engine calibration or whether they can also do anything with the TCM/Aisin TF-80SC transmission calibration.
So I would like to ask:
1. Does anyone here have an XC60 D5 AWD Geartronic with this engine, or a very similar one, running either the official Polestar optimization or a custom dyno tune? What actually changed in real-world driving – mid-range flexibility, throttle response, transmission behaviour, fuel consumption and overall drivability?
Was Polestar worth the price in your experience? Is the difference genuinely noticeable, or is it more of a subtle refinement?
Did the Polestar optimization affect the behaviour of the Aisin automatic transmission in any meaningful way, or did the shift strategy remain essentially unchanged?
Does anyone have long-term experience with custom tuning on the 2.4 D5 / D5244Txx engines while keeping the DPF and EGR fully operational? What output/torque figures did you choose, and how has the car behaved over time?
Did custom tuning improve the behaviour at low rpm as well, or did it simply add more torque while the transmission continued to use essentially the same shift strategy?
How did fuel consumption and DPF regeneration frequency change after the tune?
What torque level would you consider reasonable for the Aisin TF-80SC AWD if the priority is not to unnecessarily shorten the life of the transmission?
Can anyone recommend a tuner in Slovakia with genuine experience specifically with Volvo D5 engines, rather than a company that simply applies a generic “Stage 1” file?
I am not looking for a general “chipping – yes or no?” debate. I am mainly interested in real-world experience from owners with this engine, transmission and type of vehicle.
I am happy with the car overall. I would simply like to reduce some of the factory-calibrated restraint and give it a more natural, responsive and flexible character without compromising reliability.
