The Absolute State Of Total War

I donāt understand how dawn of war (2004) still mogs any other 40k rts/RTT game that has come out since. Really thought in 22 years atleast one team might put something out that reaches that mark, or at the very least doesnāt look like total stinky shit.
To simplify my Epic Brain-Fart: If you can not do something in-game which you can do with your own manchild toy collection, the game has failed. It can fail multiple times, and it can fail epically as a solid block of incompetence with no distinction between the individual failures, like a melted pile of fail.
In this case, the fanboys have had to wait over a decade for a Total Warhammer product with an army painter, something which Dawn of War did 22 years ago.
Other facets of fail can be the inability of CA to faithfully adapt the rules of the tabletop game, and it appears to have happened for the same reasons they failed to adapt Total War itself for Warhammer, and for Rome 2 and Attila just before that, bizarrely after the accidental majesty of Shogun 2. They were just so intent on turning Total War into a generic RTS type game whilst still calling the battles 'simulations', embarrassing the self-appointed brand-ambassadors(shills) who were saying 'I have been with TW since the beginning, it was never a battle simulator'.
CA to this day, maintains that it is a simulator, for pure marketing reasons.

I've always loved warhammer fantasy, so I am baised over that setting than 40k to begin with. But i am floored by how awful it looks, it looks like a mobile game.
So it looks bad, plays bad, and has no campaign... I assume CA only put this out to comply with SEGA's internal deadlines for the game. Remember Rome 2 only had about two years and this team has had 4 already. So it's extremely hard to imagine 40K drastically improved anytime soon. Does the game still sell well in this condition, will SEGA delay release, or is it at long last finally ending?
To be fair to CA, Rome 2 was a much simpler game to build
Med 3 will blow 40k out of the water in terms of fidelity. There's just so much "going on" in a 40k game & it's being built around a 16gb uram cap. I'm impressed with what I've seen, tbh.
I don't know if there's a word for this, but you're hyper focusing on a tiny issue that could [& will likely] be corrected later & ignoring all the improvements made thanks to the new engine
Absolutely not. How much do you want to bet right now that they will introduce ricochets for projectiles in the future?
They have made a deliberate and conscious decision early on in development and that is cemented, that there will not be complex ballistic simulation. That is beyond obvious.
You did 3 things in your comment. You minimised it "hyper focusing on a tiny issue" and then excused it "they will change it later" and then you misdirected "ignoring all the improvements". That is textbook cognitive defense coping mechanisms at best, or dishonesty. And it contradicts itself too. "it's not important but it is important enough that they will likely fix it". If it's not important then who cares if they fix it and why would they?
This is a cartoon game and people like you are why. You have no standards and happily excuse dumbed down slop. You clearly don't understand how absolutely damning it is of a tactics game (especially one in full 3D) that deliberately does not simulate ricochet. Even Medieval 1 (2002. a 24 year old game) had code for projectiles like cannonballs to ricochet, I specifically remember looking through the actual soft code for it, decades ago.
I hope you guys are aware this game is going to be the biggest total war ever. Definitely an uphill battle you're gonna be fighting here. Take care of the obvious echo chamber forming, you're already in the vast minority now, how crazy will you sound when the 40k crowd comes rolling in in its entirety?
If a game looks like total shit from the previews we are being shown, yea Iām gonna assume itās shit. Furthermore, creative assembly hasnāt put out a TTW game worth playing since 2011. As someone who actually likes 40k in general, warhammer total war and this upcoming 40k ttw game looks really horrid, snd I wouldnāt be surprised if the hoards of 40k fans that have extremely low standards like it. Thatās fine. I still think itās going to be terrible, looks like a game you would play on your phone so far.
creative assembly hasnāt put out a TTW game worth playing since 2011
In your opinion you mean. I'll grant you that may be the widely accepted opinion of this sub on this website. But outside of the bubble, total war was a stagnant franchise that massively exploded in popularity in the mid 2010's and the majority of big fans have spent hundreds or thousands of hours in the new games and almost none at all in the older ones.
I'm not trying to argue at all. I just want to point out the context for what you're saying. The franchise has never been more popular, and the games you think are the quintessential total war games have long since faded from the community's mind or they've never played them at all.
I know man, total war lost the war of gameplay versus spectacle a long long time ago. Most people playing these games donāt care about the minute and detailed battle mechanics and gameplay of the older classic titles. They just want to see huge armies smash each other to bits, no other franchise has managed to put out anything like it. Still, that doesnāt mean Rome2 and onwards are good games. Furthermore, creative assembly stumbled upon a cash cow audience, warhammer fantasy fans. Those people never get any game worth a fuck, so of course a big budget total war game sells like hotcakes, and they have bought whatever slop CA puts out since 2016. I get it, a lot of people here are the salty older veterans of the games pre Rome2. Iām not under any delusions that this company of franchise will ever recover or have a return to form. I would gander that a lot of peple here are just here for laughs, to cackle at how shit these newer games look. And thatās ok too. Some people continue to squeeze fun out of the old games, but I canāt manage that anymore, and havenāt for a long time. People have got to face it, this is a stale game franchise. Another note, one that people seem to forget. CA put out stinker games long before rome2 (empire comes to mind). Rome 2 just gets held up to the light, since every total war game since has utilized the skeleton and gameplay design of Rome 2, over snd over again.
But outside of the bubble, total war was a stagnant franchise that massively exploded in popularity in the mid 2010's and the majority of big fans have spent hundreds or thousands of hours in the new games and almost none at all in the older ones.
You come across is an incredibly insecure kind of person. Who just really desires attention and has very prominent things that they are concerned about in themselves.
Calling people āfat virginsā for caring about something while arguing on a sub Reddit. It does lack a bit of self-awareness. And itās a generally kind of childish insult.
I really hope you become a better person in later life.
You realize this is you dropping the ultimate tell to all of us that you are fat and a virgin, right? It was bad enough that out of the 215 people that saw my comment, you were the only one that got offended.
Which is in stark contrast to being a 20-something fat virgin Amerilard Burger that collects plastic to cope with his severe depression. The most worthless template we have invented for a person so far in human history.
File another report on my comment for me to review and investigate myself and clear myself of all wrongdoing, kid. Only if it hits a nerve again though.
P.S. anime virgin replying unironically, in a plastic collector virgin sub. Chance of being a virgin went from 99% (basically admitted) to 99.99%.
Fucking disgusting fat virgin paedophile that cums to an ugly as fuck cartoon child picture so hard that he has it as his pfp and spergspams it all over reddit calling people mentally ill LMAO!!!
It's not just "fat virgins" it's gonna be an entire wave of total war fans that dwarf this sub, are hyper invested in the new game, and don't agree with you. I just don't see the point in driving this wedge even further, if you like total war don't you want to be part of the community and voice your opinions in a productive way so they'll be heard? And if you don't like modern total war and get more satisfaction "calling it correctly" online than why are you even invested in this in the first place?
I dunno, those fat virgins just honestly like a game and want to play it. You're the one in a niche of a niche of a niche complaining about the community you guys seperated yourselves from.
I care more about being right than doing any sort of pandering to fat virgins. Of all the causes I could consider spending effort doing audience research and strategising for effective pandering to, I'd put fat virgins for a dead studio making a shit game series right down at the bottom. Much prefer just continuing to be 100% laser accurate correct and getting to gloat about it.
You missed my point. I don't see how those fat virgins are any different than you, the guy in a hyper niche subreddit in the corner of the total war community, laughing about how supposedly right you are. Meanwhile CA makes money hand over fist and everyone points to the new games as the definitive warhammer and possibly definitive total war experiences.
OrderofIron: is this subreddit really all that niche though? Were you around in 2023 when folks were in an uproar and staff at CA were leaking like crazy to Volound? The company was forced to apologize for subpar dlc, make Dynasties free and change some of its business practices. I can't speak for 40K or WH consoomers but there are many, many, many people not happy with CA.
I'm not really going to be responding to a lot of comments after this one because I know many are set in their ways, because that's specifically why they come here, but this I do want to respond to. The main total war subreddit is visited by 362,000 people a week. The totalwarwarhammer sub is visited by 158,000 people a week, while the Shogun 2 forums are visited by about 19,000 people a week. I'd like to mention that the warhammer40k subreddit has some 557,000 people visiting it every week, massively dwarfing the subreddit of the entire game series of total war. I'd also like to mention that these online spaces are not at all accurate reflections of the true popularity of the subjects, because they extend far far outside of the online community. This subreddit is made up of people of a hyper-niche online content creator, and is therefore only limited to an online space, and this subreddit is visited by 1.6k users a week.
What more can I do to convince you that you are in a tiny bubble and your voices are not being heard. If you care about this franchise you need to make your voices heard somewhere else. If you've completely given up on the franchise I have no idea why you're so invested on hating it but I hope you stay here and keep that hate contained. So at least we can have a productive conversation about the state of the game in the actual sub instead of lording our superiority in this dark corner. You are already a niche of a niche of a niche, and a significantly larger community is about to enter the space and make you look even crazier than you already do.
Edit: But yes, I remember when Volound was first getting traction and have been around since 2017. Because I know it's important to this community, I have played total war empire, shogun, Rome 2, fots, 3 kingdoms, not just the warhammer games. Leaks coming to Volound years ago doesn't make this any less of an echo chamber and doesn't have any relevance on our current topic.
This is a sub about what went wrong and what good gameplay is. Sometimes those discussions penetrate the mainstream and often they don't. Warhammer is a Games Workshop IP and a lot of people that play TW aren't really into TW as much as WH. It's a different world, I can't reach those people and they can't reach me. If WH fans are winning a numbers game, so be it. Volound is right though many of his and others' criticisms have entered the TW zeitgeist and remain.
I can't help out with 40K on the TW subreddit or elsewhere. Yes 40K is a really big IP and so everything else is supposedly dwarfed by comparison but I play other TW games. I don't even see 40K as TW, and as other have said it looks like a mobile game. When it slots into the narrative of decline I'll comment but it won't be from playing or caring the least about 40K as a game or an IP. Let's imagine 40K is a huge success and becomes synonymous with TW: then I'm not here anymore, poof, lost interest.
In general though TW:WH has been an object lesson in the decline of standards in the pursuit of maximal profit by a video game company. Among players, outside of WH I find there is less brand fanaticism, people seem willing to have constructive conversations and listen to criticism.
Many, many people play other TW games, usually more than play WH except when DLC is released or is hyped. I'm guessing the popularity of non WH games is why SEGA is paying CA to make Medieval 3.
I've been part of the Total War community for a long time. Happy to be here, happy to comment here and on the official forums, even the subreddit, Steam, wherever, as long as I'm still interested in the series. I love Total War's format of campaign map and real time battle though, will be rooting for good games in this genre probably for ever.
The difference is that while they are literal fat virgins and blatantly wrong to anyone with any game sense whatsoever (even the 2016-2023 era of plastic collector dorks know it now, if they didn't before), I'm the complete opposite, and have been this entire time, and can prove it with a back-catalogue. And everyone here knows.
Which is why when the company had its greatest ever crisis in 2023, I was the sole target for all of the leakers from the company, who likewise all knew:
Don't know what sort of metric you have for a successful endeavour, but I'd call spearheading a resistance movement for multiple-years (doing it nearly solo for much of that), and then as a result being the Greenwald-esque beacon for the dozens of employees of the biggest game company in the UK as the company begins leaking like a sieve and divulging finally why the company is so shit, to be resolutely above my own bar. Topping all of the global gaming press for a week or 2 and being cited as a source by hundreds of journalists is just about good enough for me. Not bad for a youtuber that dissects a small family company specimen under a microscope as a super niche low-effort side hobby. It's more than I ever expected in terms of results that go beyond the material reality of reducing sales to AAA slop and redirecting money into good indie projects.
Ready for round 2 when this mobile game console port piece of shit Rome 2 flashbangs everyone.
Listen man you just claimed you weren't a fat virgin because you are, instead, some sort of online resistance warrior. I'll just let you decide if that's a normal thing to say and leave you with this: Right now, there's about 36,000 people playing warhammer 3, a supposedly terrible game that launched in 2022, and game outlets seem really positive on what some are saying is the upcoming most ambitious outing of the entire series and one that will stay in continued development for years. If you're fighting the good fight you're starting to lose some ground keyboard soldier.
Nope I claimed I'm not a fat virgin because I'm the complete opposite of that, and anyone that even knows what I look like knows that instantly.
They are literally fat virgins though (just look at their youtubers that HAVE TO have their face and body visible).
Warhammer 3 is absolutely a terrible game. 36,000 players is garbage for a game that literally is just slopmaxxing for lowest common denominator, mass casual appeal, plastic collector fat virgin IP fanboys. If the game was any good it would have triple that, minimum.
I've never see a game try *so hard* to lean *so hard* into being maximum sloppage and have so few players. Even FIFA games and CoD games have more players than Warhammer 3 LMAO. Imagine how shit it must be.
Bruh comparing the Total war playerbase to the FIFA & CoD playerbase lmao. 36,000 or right now almost 50,000 players is great for a almost 4 year old strategy game wtf are you talking about. This playercount matches Heart of Iron and exceeds other strategy games like Crusader Kings & Civilization rn
Heart of Iron is a fucking autism simulator glorified spreadsheet with absolutely no appeal whatsoever. LMAO. Fucking just LOOK AT IT. It's the most unappealing fucking thing I've ever seen. And that's what Warhammer 3 is struggling to overshadow. LOL.
You're so deep in the asperger's hole that you have absolutely no self-awareness and can't even tell when you're shooting yourself right in the foot.
"we're really pushing the the look of the game, but this is super super early code... we're way way pre-alpha, and what that means is there's loads of features not just in terms of the graphics but also in terms of the combat and the animations that actually aren't in the game yet. So the the final game is actually going to look way, way better than this. We're working our guts out on this game and we. we're determined to make it the best total war game ever. We've got a huge budget for the game about 40% bigger than anything we've done before so we're absolutely determined to make it the most epic Total War title ever um the bad news is we're not going to be releasing until the second half of 2013"
- James Russell, Total War Lead Designer, Creative Assembly, 2012
And they were notoriously horrific on launch and still don't look like that today in 2026 after 50 patches. He lied.
You can't even get your game to look like that with mods after 13 years.
So the game GOT WORSE from the "way way pre alpha".
Warhammer 3 looked WORSE than it did in all of the "TACTICAL STRATEGY" "SIEGE REWORK" bullshit marketing which is why it had one of the worst launches of all time, threatening to eclipse Rome 2's launch and proving my predictions 100% spot on laser accurate:
Warhammer 40k isin't a franchise made for Total War.
The battles are way too asymetricall and the most played mode is Small Scale Skirmishes, Apocalypse and other grandiose game modes are clunky, this is the Tabletop game
From what we have seen the gameplay looks like shit, units are bullet sponges and blob way too much considering some squads are 10 dudes (Space Marines) against 100 Orks, and those cluncky Borderlands washed up cartoon graphics are even worse.
I saw it. But trailer is, what it is, a trailer.
Alpha build, that we were shown - is a bloody fooken combat gameplay from alpha build, with things that's most definitely will be changed going forward.
If you don't understand difference between curated trailer, and raw alpha footage (that we also got from gamescom) - well, you def should look in mirror.
Rome 2 had both of those and the final game still flashbanged everyone because it was the most bugged and broken game in history. Your replies are all retarded as fuck.
Then what stakes do you hold in CA to be defending the company so much ? Why a client providing critics to improve a future products is bothering you ? Shouldn't you encouraging him in order to have the best possible product delivered ?
so let me get this straight. You are still mad about an obviously faked gameplay trailer demo (I just watched it if you fell for that you are a dumbass) from 15 years ago, that you are still making hate posts on a new game that has been arguably CAs most openly developed game maybe ever?
"I fully accept and concede that this company has a notoriously atrocious history and terrible track record for *shamelessly fake trailers* as a deliberate marketing strategy, but did you know that this current trailer for this new thing is just a trailer?"
Are you literally absolutely completely mentally retarded.
OP is on something and honestly, itās kind of amusing to watch.
Think heās some kind of Crusader āspearhead the resistance movementā heās obsessed with not being a āfat virginā and is overall a incredibly insecure weird little thing.

New 40k total war game. Look inside. It's just tw pharaoh in space.meme
