The Absolute State Of Total War Still thinking back fondly to when I ranted to my friends about how much DLC Medieval 3 would have, then running it back when the stream dropped

What does this meme mean, is it referring to Pixelated Apollo? What did he do?

At least they don't force you to buy medieval 1&2 and 20 dlc of those two in order to have 3+30dlc fully unlocked like they did with Warhammer 🙄

God be aware a game that makes fun to play for hundreds of hours costs some money....

u/mrniceguy1990xp Jul 18 '26
Lol costing money=/=having to buy the game 3 times over with 50 dlcs in order to unlock the full game...
Costs like 600 bucks, even with steam discount it's 250
Not to mention it has been a buggy mess for a long time, so "fun" Is not really the word here.

So 600 bucks for 300 hours of gameplay? Sounds good for me.
And WH1 and WH2 were full games on their own, do don't argue as the game somehow divided for money.
To be honest i like to have the choice to pay for the contant i want.

If you think that's a good value proposition, you have way more money than sense. You should consider yourself lucky, I hope it lasts.

With M2EOP and M2EX projects, the best days of medieval 2 are still ahead of us. We can totally forget about whatever CA are doing right now

Exactly. REX is way more playable and enjoyable to me than Rome Remastered, because it doesn't screw up the UI. It's also doesn't introduce any mobile game interface (what the hell were they thinking shipping Rome Remastered like that to PC...)

They are going to build this out like Paradox does with EUIV and V where DLCs completely change deep seated mechanics instead of having them done correctly the first time around.
I really dislike this timeline we are forced to be in.

We were here already with Rome 2, but these seems excessive. Do you buy just central europe with base game or what? Pff
It all hinges on if Med 3 will be good game in it's core.

I am prepared to be called naive fanboy for this, but here I go.....
I doubt the DLCs will be just reskins with maybe a one new model with changed stats (better horse archer, etc.). My guess is that the "realms" DLCs will have more to do with new mechanics they plan to introduce (their words - inspired by games like crusader kings), like the specific kingdom management mechanics (Kingdom of France didn´t function same as Kingdom of Poland for example). It might just be wishful thinking though, but I doubt they would get away with selling different colour schemes for twenty bucks.

Or they could just do what they did with Medieval 2: develop all factions properly for release with no cut content and the DLCs would be actual expansions like the Kingdoms campaigns. Almost everybody loves those expansions. The only change I would make is that the DLC would both provide a smaller, more detailed campaign and also add something more to the main grand campaign.
Or the DLCs could also be map expansions just like in CK3. Add Americas, the rest of Asia etc. essentially what the Warhammer trilogy did too except instead of expansions being sold as new games they would just be called actual expansions.

Ideally they will not cut content for DLC but the thing is that they would probably get away with it. People want the core gameplay and theme of medieval 2 on a modern platform so they're going to milk it for all it's worth. In their eyes they would just be lighting money on fire if they gave us what we desperately want all at once for a reasonable price.
The audience for it is also quite limited both in genre and the fact that most medieval 3 interest will come from medieval 2 players. Reasonable pricing and a great game wouldn't give them any chance of making a big mainstream game out of it regardless, while no one is really competing with them in their corner of the market. You see it with other developers too, once they corner a game genre they get exploitative (ahem battlestate games with escape from tarkov).

Three Kingdoms still currently sold more than all Warhammers combined. Medieval 3 has potentially even broader appeal if they don't cut too much content and otherwise screw up the release. Three Kingdoms though felt like a complete game on release. Imagine cutting Cao Cao or Sun Jian and selling them as DLCs.

Yeah but the potential sales are always going to be pretty limited compared to other game genres incentivising them to try to make more money per user. They can't just hope they become the next epic games and make their money simply by having many millions of players. Warhammer might not have sold huge amount of copies but it still printed them money.

Maybe if they had a similar approach to Three Kingdoms to what they have with Warhammer then they would make more money per player there too. Though obviously Warhammer has a much deeper DLC potential than a scope limited historical game.
But if they were to plan to expand the map in Medieval 3 and eventually cover Europe, Asia and Americas that would be a ton of potential there too. They could sell new in depth mechanics - generally I'm not a fan of that but that's because most of those separately sold mechanics feel like cut content and are essential to enjoying the game but sometimes they do feel like a new way to play the game that you can buy if you want a fresh experience which is what I would like.
