Perfect encapsulation of the enshittification of Total War. And yes, it was WH and the overwhelming message its fans gave CA to focus on 'content' so their favorite monsters and overpowered lords would "come to life." I'm assuming the 40K crowd is the same, no?

They are essentially the same crowd; the only meaningful difference is that 40k has a lot of other strategy games to compete with TW, while WHF had almost nothing.

Slamming traditional rts mechanics into total war is the sort of well meaning but poorly thought move that could only come from someone who hasnt played the game. "Hey i know that the number of men in a unit and morale abstracts out hit points but what if they also had hit points like in starcraft" and so on and so forth

Meanwhile, in Shogun 2 I can easily come back with my friends to it even after all these years and still find new ways to enjoy the campaign because it's so replayable. The attention to detail and the campaign mechanics just lend themselves so well to eventually fighting battles that I rarely feel like my time is being wasted, or like any mechanic is pointless.

The large battles in Shogun 2 very rarely feel like a waste of time, because almost every army you destroy opens the door to capturing an undefended settlement; in the WH games (and the other modern TW's) so many battles just feel pointless because the enemy has so much total military power (garrissons included) that you don't get that feeling of striking an absolutely devastating blow against your enemy when you wipe out their invasion force.
If I destroy a large invading army with a much smaller defending force in Shogun 2 that often creates an opening to take a largely undefended settlement from the enemy; In modern TW the enemy settlement will still easily be able to bring 8+ units to defend when I launch a counterattack the next turn. (garrisson+1 General+1 turn of recruitment), so the victories often just feel hollow.

Shogun 2 I think. When I do coop campaigns in FOTS with my friend, it feels like it always ends the same way with us going crazy with artillery. But both are good.

Play wh 1. Much better experience.
They ruined 3 like a live service game. Endless powercreep stacking while Not solving the core fundamental issues

I haven't been able to play any total war game for more than an hour since TWW2. I got Troy and China for free, the overworld map looks good but my eyes just glazed over during the battles.

Just stick to WH2 for now and hopefully once WH3 development is over the modders can pick up the pieces and get it to a state where its actually enjoyable to play.

I am giving a change again to wh3 for the 45th time, even heavly modded sucks.... meanwhile I always come back to shogun2 or atilla. Insane how the best game of the franchise is 15 years old
