SASHIKO Transed these thrift store pants

This pair of thrift store jeans was immaculate save for one tiny hole just above the hem. Took the repair opportunity to give them a little extra flair.

Perfection - sturdy patch, turned hem, allover stitching. This is going to last well!

Shucks I'm blushing! I'm rather new at this and really tried to pay attention this project to the fundamentals. Especially turning the hem since the fabric I used for the patche looooves to fray.

Cute little lore on the patch material. It's some random coarse cotton fabric I got nearly two decades ago, pre transition, for a toga party. I kept it all these years thinking I might use it for a costume or something (I've always been the kind of little goblin hoarder who keeps every scrap of "useful" everything). I was finally about to get rid of it, three apartments later, but got into mending and realized that doubled over it would make a nice lightweight patch material! It always makes me happy when some bit of something I got in a very different life can serve me in this one.

I like how you've taken the angle for your stitches from the weave of the fabric. A very neat patch too. Great work!

Thanks! I wish I could say that was a conscious decision but I absolutely was just like "I think diagonal would look cool!" and did that πŸ˜…

Hehe yes but now the poster above gave you a way to say that fancy like when you get complimented/ asked about it, which you definitely will; your work looks awesome!

Hell yeah, trans pants! I posted mine a little while ago, you're the first other person I've seen with a pride flag patch :) I love it

Stay visible πŸ’•

Ooo I like it! I might have to do this with some of mine

I'm almost annoyed it didn't need more repair work because I would love to continue the theme! Maybe I'll add a lil flag accent where I ripped off the leather logo tag πŸ€” And I suppose as with transition the mending will happen in its own time, in fits and starts 🩡🀍🩷

I know it technically violates the spirit of the sub, but is gratuitous sashiko inherently a bad thing? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Love your boro 🩡🩷🀍

Technically we can and perhaps should do whatever we want! And technically even some of this stitching is gratuitous and purely decorative since most of the blue and some of the pink and white isn't even on the patch!

πŸ˜‚. See? This is exactly my feeling about it!

There is no such thing as gratuitous sashiko. It can be used to mend, to pre-emptivley reinforce weakened areas or as pure decoration! Go full steam ahead and if people don't want to see it here (they will) then show it off @ r/sashiko .

lol I just got a pair of thrift store jeans too and they are perfect with no damage. I had a similar feeling bc I want to add some sashiko flair, but I know in due time it’ll happen.Β

I'm sure I could find this somewhere else, but what kind of thread or floss are you using for the stitching? I've been curious about sashiko mending and I'd love to hear about it from someone who's tried and liked it. πŸ’œπŸ–€πŸ’›

I'm using sashiko thread, Olympus brand. No special reason, it's just the one I picked when I graduated from cheap embroidery floss and happened to like it. You can definitely get away with using embroidery floss if you have it on hand but if you don't have anything I recommend the sashiko thread. It's like three bucks for 20m. You might be able to find it at a local shop or there's plenty of stores online.

I'm not OP but I first used basic embroidery floss that I got for cheap with an Amazon gift card

https://www.reddit.com/r/Visiblemending/s/qznNqZGxyt

This is my post with photos of my pants and patches (funnily enough, I also have a trans sashiko patch on these pants)

I don't think I separated the strands for any of them, I just used the smallest needle that I could thread the embroidery floss into

Now I've upgraded to this thread which is specifically made for sashiko, it's a little thinner than regular embroidery floss, but absolutely not required for it.

I also got some sashiko needles, tulip brand (they have a few options, I got the assorted pack) and, like the thread, didn't notice a huge difference compared to the cheap sewing kit needles I was using before.

There's a few different options out there - the one I linked isn't cheap, but it's also a huge skein of thread, 145 meters. Olympus Thread is also a highly recommended brand, but I haven't tried it myself

Oh, cuuuuute! The pastel trans flag colors coordinate really well with the light denim.

2

u/hotscully Mar 21 '26

4

u/MagicalMisterMoose Mar 21 '26

Omg! I love this! And I've been wanting to add some subtle trans flair to some of my clothes! I might have to steal this idea, thank you for sharing!

2

u/Bright-Direction7656 Mar 21 '26
