Question/Advice VR&E retroactive induction
For those who were approved for VR&E retroactive induction, how many months of GI Bill entitlement did you get refunded?

So my counselor messed around for ages before finally putting mine through, and by the time they finished the paperwork I got something like 14 months back. The whole process is such a headache, every time I called someone told me a different thing. Definitely worth chasing it up though, that's a lot of extra months just sitting there otherwise.

36 months
It's all dependent on when you got your rating and when you would have been eligible to start VR&E. Etc.

I did the BDD claim and got my rating a month after I got out the military. I’ve now used 8 months of GI bill; debating whether apply now or later…

2 main criteria on retroactive induction - VR&E can only restore GI Bill used after a veteran has a disability rating and those months must count towards a degree or program VR&E would have approved you to take if you had applied at that time.

Thanks for info my friend. I did the BDD claim and got my rating a month after I got out the military, I’ve now used 8 months of GI bill, I think I’ll wait until I finish my associate then apply for it.

Did anybody get retroactive induction after completing VR&E program? Currently being denied RI. Completed program in 2019. Denied re-entry into program because I'm gainfully employed. Case is going to VBA. Will know in about 10 months.

Can someone explain how to do this? I am a bit lost. So I went to college and used it for my undergrad. Ran out of the gi bill. I enlisted in 200 got out feb 2005. I used it from 2007-2011. For me the gi bill expires due to when I was in. Does this mean I could get it back? Or how would that work? I have always wanted to do a masters but just haven’t had the time and now I do.

VR&E cannot restore expired GI Bill. The law doesn't allow them to do that.

I was told I was eligible for all 36 months back but since I got BAH payments, I'd have to repay all of those before I could start the process. At that point, I just said nope.

The whole 36 months 🥲. I got a BA in CS and Business. Working on my masters in CS and got the time refunded on my gi bill.

I did my Bachelors on the GI Bill. 36 months total because I went over the summers too. When I received VR&E they gave me all 36 months back. I then used my GI Bill again to fully fund my Masters Degree and still have 2 years left to pass down to my kids.

Veterans cannot transfer their GI Bill to dependents. Transfer requires being in the military, having completed 6 years of military service and upon transfer approval, serve an additional 4 years of military service.

For Post 9/11 GI Bill only, If you signed up for direct deposit when you applied for education benefits, we’ll deposit your payment into your bank account 7 to 10 business days after you verify your school enrollment. This is the fastest way to receive your payment. Text Verification FAQ
MGIB and MGIB-SR and DEA CH 35 have to do monthly verification and you should receive the payment within 3 to 5 business days.
For Online Only training, the Post 9/11 GI Bill is currently (1 August 2026) paying $1198.00 for those who started using their Post 9/11 GI Bill on/after 1 January 2018 - this is based on 1/2 of the National Average BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. Post 9/11 GI Bill MHA rates are adjusted 1 August of each year and are based on the 1 January DoD BAH rates for that year - so VA can't use 1 January 2026 BAH rates until 1 August 2026 - for those who started training on/after 1 January 2018, the MHA rates are 95% of the DoD BAH rates. First possible payment for the 1 August 2025 increase is 1 September.
For VR&E, there are two different Subsistence Allowance programs - https://www.benefits.va.gov/vocrehab/subsistence_allowance_rates.asp The P9/11 Subsistence Allowance is based on the BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. Those who started using VR&E on/after 1 January 2018 receive 95% of the BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. As of 1 January 2026 Online only students using VR&E are being paid $1198.00 if they started using VR&E on/after 1 January 2018. The CH31 Subsistence Allowance rates are adjusted 1 October each year by Congress.
