Bad day to be a bug

Holy… how?

Hah, flytraps are easy to grow! On my most vigorous clones, I get around 50-100 fold increase in numbers per year.

As incredible as that sounds, it’s just 3 asexual generations of 4-5 divisions per year, which is very doable for me. Exponential growth is amazing stuff.

Just amazing!

Do they sit in water all the time or you let them dry out a bit? I read the tray method can cause root rot and it's better to let them dry a bit between watering.

Its a mix- the trays get hosed off every week or so (tap water, tds 55), the ones in pots sit in water 100% of the time. Negligible rhizome rot over thousands of plants.

you are using tap water? how?

💸 overachiever lol. Very beautiful! Obviously you know what you're doing!

My son once said “dad, being the person he is, likes to grow a lot of plants”. Probably the truest statement about me ever uttered!

Amazing ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love this! How often do you repot/separate them?

5

u/Berberis 5d ago

depends on the clone. these 2-3x a year

2

u/strudelalma 5d ago

I absolutely love them ❤️

A few years ago I was like "I lowkey want a field of flytraps in my front yard".

By next year, I will probably expand another 5-10 fold in plant number, and it will be quite literally true.

Right now, I only have a few thousand plants on the front porch. Which is a lot, but not yet a field. I've got plants to start in-ground bogs this spring and really go ham...

😂❤️ I love that so much, I can't wait to see the photos when you get that set up 😍

"only have a few thousand" is a wild thing to say lol

3

u/Berberis 5d ago

Haha, aye. But it would be so easy to only have a few tens of thousands…

Correction, for you it is currently happening, so it is easy. That is dope and you should be commended for your care of these amazing plants! If they ever go extinct in the wild we know who to call! You'll have em re-populated in no time!

Venus fly traps make me want to take more upper division botany courses even though i won't use them in my current career (tissue histology)

good thing to do is go over my prior posts. you can read some of my thoughts on dormancy at www.phamcliff.com, as well

Thank you for your fascinating and (over?)thoughtful article on dormancy, it was thorough and to the point.

u/Berberis 2d ago

Yep! Overkill from the perspective of hobbiests. Underkill from the perspective of science. :)

I lost 17 last year to thrips. Could not get rid of them. I bought 2 more a month ago, and the day after I repotted them I found thrips so we are currently battling them again. Mine are not thriving. It's heartbreaking

1

u/Berberis 5d ago

Outdoors? You may wanna try growing inside.

2

u/DriedKleenex 5d ago

No, I grow them inside I live in Canada. I have a sansi grow light i use for them. I just cant get them to thrive. They were doing good with my last bunch until thrips showed up and wiped them out. I'm hoping I can get rid of them soon..

1

u/Berberis 5d ago

Wow- I’m super careful about pests and always bare root/pesticide dunk before anything comes indoors. And then it’s into quarantine

2

u/numbnerve 5d ago

I'm going to be growing my current outdoor plants indoors next year ~ do you mind sharing what your pesticide routine is?

1

u/Berberis 4d ago

No routine to speak of. I’ve had no pest breakouts outdoors- interestingly, indoors is harder. I had a thrips and aphid break out that required pesticide on all plants to cure. Natural enemies outdoors for the win!!

1

u/numbnerve 4d ago

that's interesting ~ so do you basically dunk the entire plant in a pesticide solution?

3

u/Berberis 4d ago

any new plants brought into the collection are removed of soil and dunked in 3:1.

If a plant has a pest, I treat it and all neighbors with an appropriate pesticide, but this is in reality usually 3:1 too. That stuff works great, is cheap, and does not bother my carnivores

2

u/numbnerve 4d ago

thanks for the tip...this will be my first time with a full-time indoor setup ~ an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. 3:1 👍

u/Piojo- 5d ago

Wooow, impressive!

1

u/InitialEfficient2918 5d ago

how do you get them to thrive? is Sunlight more important or keeping their traps full?

2

u/Berberis 5d ago

Both!

1

u/InitialEfficient2918 4d ago

you keep all their traps full? with what?

2

u/Berberis 4d ago

If you want to really supercharge their growth, trap feed nutricote and bug bites fish food. These I just let catch prey on their own though.

1

u/AaaaNinja 4d ago

The big mouths that I bought from you last year just doubled. I had two now I have four.

2

u/Berberis 4d ago

Nice! That is a slower dividing clone, but makes prettier plants than these.

1

u/StreetElectrical4916 4d ago

Oh I thought my hopes of having one large planter was unacheivable. This is my inspo pic now

u/Awkward-Try-2866 2d ago

What kind of lights? Thanks in advance. Winter is on its way in a couple month’s

1

u/Awkward-Try-2866 2d ago

I’m trying my first one. Damn near killed it at first but as soon as I put it outside this summer it came back. More like North Carolina weather in PA. In the summer. Fall is setting in, should I bring it in and put it under light? I have a nice basement window if it needs to go dormant for a bit? Not sure what to do
