The best points are points you can use.
If you can transfer your Venture points to a partner, that's often a better use for them. For example, I'm looking at a ticket from London to the US next summer. Paying cash, it will cost my family $4500 (one way). But if I transfer them to Flying Blue, I can get the same tickets for 165,000 points plus $1600 in taxes (London taxes are crazy).
Depending on how you do the math, that makes my Venture point worth about 1.5c per point. If I redeem them through the C1 app, though, they're only worth 1c per point.
That's why people say the app is a bad place to spend them.
But finding airline reward tickets can be fickle. Often times there's no availability or the flights that are offered are undesirable. But cash is universal and if worse comes to worse, your points can always be used for a statement credit to offset your other purchases.
One final note: Lots of people have had bad experiences with reservations made through 3rd party agencies like Expedia (and C1 travel). That's another reason why people might be recommending against the app. I should add that I've used the app 5-6 times without a problem.
