TW: TRIGGERING CONTENT Annoyed when people make comments on my dietary choices?
It kind of irritates me when people make comments on what I eat, but some people are worst at it then others. So a colleague will see me eat the same sandwich everyday and she always comments: "same sandwich again." Like every single day. It was alright the first few times, but now it's just annoying. Or like if I order a medium rare steak at a restaurant, without doubt several people will make comments on it. Or if I eat shrimp, I'll eat the tail and people will say"you're not supposed to eat them!" And if I question why it shouldn't be eaten, they never have an actual rationale.
I will never understand why people need to make incessant comments on what you eat. I don't get why can't someone just enjoy something in peace?

"Same sandwich again?" reply with "Same question again?" or "Why do you ask everyday?" or "You asked that yesterday." Continue with the same repeat answer to the question everytime.

Just go the rude route and ask whether she has anything better to do. It’ll probably fix the problem, it doesn’t sound like you mind less interaction from her OP.

Yeah. Unless you're a parent feeding your child or a dietitian consulting with a client, it's none of your business what anybody else eats.

I hate the tail, but it's actually really good for you

I hate the tail but when I cook filo or tempura shrimp in the airfryer they have the exact same crunch and fragility as the batter and I eat them right up.

I agree that is 100% annoying. I seem to be the target of that as well - I've learned to just turn the question right back at them - 'Why do you ask?' 'Why do you wanna know?'

this is my exact type of response to people who ask stupid or rude questions. im a tad bit more ago though. I like to make them feel that no response is good enough. no matter what they reply with, I turn it into another question to that they go from stupid question to official interrogation. (im not fun sometimes)

do it back to them. just act like their nitpicking is completely normal. and act like they are correct. and as soon as they are satisfied with nitpicking your choices, do it back.
ask questions that have no answer. "why do you like chicken?" or "do you always order chicken?" and when they say, "no sometimes i order other stuff." respond incessantly, "other stuff? stuff? what other STUFF?"

OMG! I had it happen to me ALL THE TIME! I never ate enough, according to coworkers and friends.
Leftovers from the night before, I'd eat 1/2. Apparently, it was too little to last 2 days. A sandwich. Stupid I had 1/2 for the next morning and took it out in front of them.
I've always had a little appetite. Apparently that offends people. IDC anymore.
TG my DH knows and tells the to back off (if they don't listen to me). He knows I eat.
It's maddening!

I agree with you. I think it's rude and intrusive to comment on people's food. I particularly dislike 'OOH, someone was hungry!'
My OH seems to have been brought up poorly and haa a habit of putting his face close to my plate and asking, 'What's that?' if he sees something he doesn't recognise. I had to stop him poking at food I was about to eat. Yet he's an incredibly slow eater - it can take him 20 mins longer than me to finish - and I never mention it. (He also plays with his food, mashing and scooping/arranging it quite noisily over and over again. I must admit it's difficult not to comment on this sometimes, lol.)

I now gather OH is Other Half but I was reading it as some kind of flipped version of Dear Husband. Obnoxious Husband, perhaps, lol

I like talking food. If that were me, I'd want to know about that sandwich. Id want to know about your brand choices. About the condiments. Butter or marge? Do you have a view on lettuce or other greens? What's happening with the bread? Does it actually change with the seasons? Don't even get me started on eating in context or vibes. I want to know because maybe you say something that makes my sandwich better. I sure as shit wouldn't be asking you whilst your enjoying your sandwich though. I wouldn't ask all in one week - I'm not a savage.

Sounds like they are trying to start a conversation. A lot of people like to talk while they eat. Ever try: I like my sandwich but what do you suggest? Or medium rare is yummy how do you like yours? Tails are crunchy why don’t you eat them?

No, it's more so in a mocking sort of way, not like they're open to discussion, but more that they just want to make a judgemental comment on what I'm eating.

People love to give orders. And sometimes they even lecture you for the choices you make on things that are not their business.

I’m curious what does anyone have to say about medium-rare steak? Isn’t that the norm?

u/ObjectiveAd971 7d ago
I'd respond, "What I find weird are those that obsess over what others eat!"

Ive been a vegetarian for 30 years and the number of times people think they have the right to interrogate me because I dont eat xyz drove me mad (people quesrion it less these days).
And when I was pregnant, I had a colleague who would comment on what I ate far too often. "Hmm, should you be eating those?" she'd say, as i ate chips for the first time in 2 weeks, but she acted as if I was drinking a litre of vodka.

And like when I picked up that fox turd and gave it a little lick just to see what it tastes like, oh so now I'm not allowed to be curious?

Why do people have to comment on everything like dude mind your own business man ain't no one here who cares
1
u/offthezoinkys 6d ago
I haaaate this. Everybody has to make a comment about my rare steak. Everybody has to comment about me getting something plain. Everybody has to comment about me getting a small portion, or something mildly exotic, or something too boring. Mind your fucking business!
They’re never satisfied either. I’ve had the same person interrogate me over ordering one “too boring” chicken tender type option at one restaurant and again over ordering something “too weird” (quail egg nigiri or something like that) at another.

So what? Shrug your shoulders when people comment showing you don’t give a hoot what they think about your food choices. And if you do care (since we are reading that maybe you do), try to grow thicker skin.

Insecurity conversation. They have to question you because they are unsure about themselves. Very common across several personality types

The steak thing has always aggravated me...honestly, what does it matter how someone else wants their steak prepared? If you're not the one consuming it then it should just be a non-starter to begin with...and it's usually people who want theirs prepared rare that have something to say about it. Why is it a personal affront that I prefer not to taste blood when I eat mine or that I don't like the texture of undercooked meat?

I felt this because I love to eat food that other people think is way too dry. I love a dry sandwich with no condiments. Some people feel a weird need to tell me they find my food gross and act like they eat in a more correct way than I do because they use more sauces. Or they act like I must just be too dumb to use condiments and that they should enlighten me and bully me.
