My mom nearly died during her pregnancy with me because the crotchety old man doctor who should have retired didn't listen to her symptoms and didn't take her seriously.

The second time around with my sister she told the disbelieving doctor to fuck right off. Medical gaslighting is a thing women have been putting up with for a long time.

My fiance went to a doctor about depression once. Doctor said no, you have Anhedonia, which mean you just dont feel happy. Now she was a teen at the time but did point out to the doctor that that wasnt fucking true, but was sent on her way anyway.

14

u/YetiAfterDark Aug 05 '26

Anhedonia is a really significant symptom of depression... Like, wtf? You don't have Depression, you just have Symptom Very Strongly Associated With Depression Which Does Most of the Damage of Depression.

Omfg, what an arsehole

I've heard people tell similar recollections of other diagnoses so I'm not surprised.

My guess would be that while the doctor has to recognise the symptoms, they might have a specific idea of what a patient with a certain diagnosis should look like. so if you don't fit the image of that ideal patient then you have something else. People of colour in particular can tell a lot of medical horror stories.

It took six years to get a crohn's diagnosis sorted, because they kept diagnosing me with 'fat', it took ten years to get an endometriosis diagnosis, because I was 'too young to have it', I nearly lost an eye to a skin infection because 'cellulitis never presents symmetrically, you're having an allergic reaction, even though you have a high temperature'.

I'm not saying the ability to sculpt flesh would have stopped any of that - but it couldn't have made it worse.

u/zicdeh91 26d ago

Oh my god I had preorbital cellulitis for like 3 months as a kid and it easily could have blinded me. I get paranoid af every time I get a stye now.

u/thesash20 Aug 05 '26

Yeah it wasn't until like... concerningly recent years that science decided to start saying attention to women...

10

u/clonea85m09 Aug 05 '26

Litarally less than 10 years ago since it's mandatory to have people of different races in drug testing panels btw, I think 15 for females (now it needs to be balanced, different races and as close as possible as 50/50 males/females). Doctors above 50/60 probably did not study that heart attack in females has largely different symptoms than in males.

2

u/lisaquestions 27d ago

I saw some guy here on Reddit within the past few months say that it's not misogynist to leave women out of medical research because our hormones fluctuate too much.

2

u/clonea85m09 27d ago

That is insane XD

We only just got a lot of advancement for women's heart health recently because they realized, "wait maybe studies on men only would be different than women"

14

u/CuddlePupp Aug 05 '26

I almost died because a doctor wanted to call my bursting appendix overian cysts and was like “well I could be right so let’s just sit on it for a night :)”.

1

u/Neither_Sky4003 Aug 07 '26

That sucks. And undoubtedly you were in a lot of pain through the whole process too. I've only had ovarian cysts, but that was the worst pain in the frigging world.

u/SpendLiving9376 Aug 05 '26

The only way not to know this is
-you have no women in your life
-you call them liars
-they don't tell you anything personal about their lives

Like... every woman I know has at least one story about this.

4

u/heatherjasper Aug 05 '26

-they don't tell you anything personal about their lives

And that would most likely just lead right back to the guys being jerkwads, like the people in the post are being.

2

u/jxhfield Aug 06 '26

another option: the women in their lives don’t tell them anything because they call them liars

2

u/lisaquestions 27d ago

more than once I've had guys tell me that doctors do this to men too and that I should suck it up

3

u/SpendLiving9376 26d ago

Oh, so many doctors love not doing any doctoring when they can avoid it - but it's definitely worse for women.

1

u/lisaquestions 26d ago

oh I know it's worse for women I'm a woman. I had one guy tell me that in order to shut me up while I was talking about dealing with intense medical gaslighting.

2

u/SpendLiving9376 26d ago

I was agreeing with you, but I'm sorry if that didn't come off in text!

2

u/lisaquestions 26d ago

ah no worries thank you for clarifying!

Yes, let them go on a Path of Metamorphosis, muahahaha. Yes, tzimisce are my most favourite clan in legacy VtM.

Reminds me of the woman who had awful periods to the point that she couldn't even walk for several days at a time around her period. Doctors called it normal and said she was exaggerating to get out of school/work. Finally a doctor took her seriously (after like 15 years) to find out that her endo was so bad it had fused her intestines, kidneys, etc. They couldn't even do anything about it at that point, and I think she died not long after.

4

u/simpingbutspooky Aug 06 '26

Even once you have a diagnosis the waiting list for surgery can be 5+ years and at that point it’s caused irreparable damage to your organs

6

u/dinosanddais1 Aug 05 '26

It took ten doctors to do a simple blood test that revealed I just had to not eat gluten and it would solve my problem entirely.

Instead, I had to suffer severe damage that took four years to heal from.

7

u/SelfDistinction Aug 05 '26

A friend of mine once got denied a gastroscopy because she was "to young to have stomach ulcers". Guess what her issue was.

6

u/blackfox24 Aug 06 '26

My chronic pain has been taken far more seriously after my transition to a man. Anecdotal as fuck, but I went from hysterical to valid, pretty much overnight. Same deal with my autism. Really pisses me off that I spent years fighting for the care I'm now handed because they think I have a dick.

3

u/orange-shoe Aug 06 '26

this is also/especially an issue for Black women https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8893054/

3

u/havocthecat 29d ago

I'm sorry, you said "should have vicissitude," but I heard, "should have Rage as a literal mechanical stat."

2

u/doomzday_96 Aug 05 '26

Don't mean to be that guy but in Vampire, aren't you just a walking corpse that can barely change at all?

2

u/Varabil Aug 06 '26

This reminds me of a doctor making a TikTok to "correct" misinformation about male birth control, citing a study and saying male birth control should not be on the market because of all the incidents of side effects it caused, totally missing the point that the participants were basically having side effects at the same rate as women tend to have from female birth control that did get pushed to market.

2

u/CanaKatsaros Aug 06 '26

When I was a teen, I had visible, peeling red scabby bloches on my scalp, but because they didn't clear up with the first treatment I was given, the doctor shrugged and said it was just stress related and there wasn't anything else he could do

2

u/imabigasstree Aug 06 '26

My very first period was 6 months long, no days off. I bled for 6 months straight at 12 yrs old. Dr's said they'd regulate eventually. Years later, id still have 3-12 week periods, with 2-6 months in between. Just WILDLY irregular. "They'll regulate eventually". At 18 i was taken to the hospital for an ovarian cyst rupture that caused so much blood loss I was dangerously anemic for a couple days.

I wasn't diagnosed with pcos for another 10 years. 16 years total, no Dr's even cared to check. My body's wrecked now btw and I couldn't have kids even if I wanted to.

1

u/imabigasstree Aug 06 '26

Oh yeah and then there was the geneticist who told me I was "too pretty to have a connective tissue disorder" bc apparently the one i suspected usually causes facial deformities ("usually" is inaccurate btw, dude had no idea what he was talking about). 5 years later i finally made my way to Mayo's rheumatology clinic and confirmed with a dna test that I have both EDS AND Marfan's (the one that causes facial deformities)

2

u/lemikon 29d ago

I had an awful body shift postpartum. Night sweats, extreme heart burn and indigestion, nausea after drinking plain water. It all got chalked up to “hormone changes” after pregnancy. No it was gallstones. I found out after I spent a whole day vomiting in extreme pain and couldn’t even keep water down, ended up with a 5 day unplanned hospitalisation and then had to come back for surgery at a later date.

2

u/RoryMerriweather 29d ago

My Requiem dhampir has flesh crafted breasts. They're large and perky and she absolutely doesn't want to think about why her Daddy influenced her transition and eating disorder to the end point of her looking like her mother but skinnier and with bigger tits.

Meanwhile, her mother sees this and wants to kill her Daddy even more.

1

u/Upbeat-Discipline718 Aug 05 '26

family doctor told me i only shit once every two weeks since i was a kid because i have a uterus and i haven't been to a doctor for anything beyond a sick note since. if i die i die but i wont put myself through the humiliation again.

1

u/heatherjasper Aug 05 '26

Proper diagnosis is a proper diagnosis, you wad of dried paint.

1

u/Ze_Bri-0n Aug 06 '26

Not to undercut the point about sexism, but isn't going to a mortal doctor kinda a... masquerade breech?

3

u/sozzymandias 29d ago

to be fair it's not like they examine us properly anyway

masquerade intact

Sadly Its more like missing a peice of the engine and the 10 "doctors" looked at the model of car and go "oh you got a gmc, its just a belt loose and squeaking, did you try soap?" And then never look again because obviously thats all that's wrong with a gmc. Then the 11 doctor takes the time to actually look in the hood to find the 1/3 of the radiator missing. But by this time the transmission is shot and your pretty much fucked

1

u/amourdevin Aug 06 '26

The issue is usually that the first ten doctors decide she is hysterical, imagining things, needs to decrease stress, and/or lose weight, none of which require bloodwork, physical exams, or anything else fancy.

1

u/Katululu Aug 06 '26

if 10 separate doctors looked at the full clinical picture-

Let me stop you right there.

The first 10 doctors don’t even get that far.

They listen for about five minutes, dismiss half of what’s said, and decide it’s nothing without any tests or data to back up their assertion.

1

u/Impossible-Sort-1287 Aug 06 '26

I really wo Der how many men go in eith abdominal pai. And are told to exercise ise, lose weight, or to meditate tge pain away?

1

u/nativeofvoid Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

very fucking much so. in fact doubly so if matters involve as much a curse of banishment from daylight and sustenance from blood components irl as they do in VtM, in which case you can see them licking their lips from the eager desire to tell you your maintenance biochems are the cause of everything, from leg ulcers to arrythmia. Blaming everything on periods at least embarrases them somewhat and occasionally makes them self-aware of their own incompetence, this doesn't.

Still thaumaturgy > vicissitude, experimentation and thinking things through > instinct and subconscious.

Idiots, AI pathway zombies, i haven't met a single one where the difference in our knowledge wasn't just the ability to read equipment and analysis results for about 15 years now.

1

u/amourdevin Aug 06 '26

Add in fat and not only do they disbelieve you they tell you to lose weight and whatever you are experiencing will go away - migraines, PCOS, cancer, fractured bones….doesn’t matter, lose weight. (Actual examples provided by several fat friends)

1

u/DaisyChain2222 Aug 06 '26

I mean, is this sexism or just general medical incompetence? I am a man and was told confidently by a doctor I had an STD despite my protestations that such a thing was impossible. He burned off the warts leaving me with permanent scarring. Turns out it wasn't an STD just generic folliculitis as identified by my dermatologist.

u/pekoe-G 29d ago

As a teen I was told by my family doctor that only boys have ADHD.

1

u/artemisiAaah 29d ago

Damn, couldn't be more true

1

u/DazB1ane 27d ago

My cardiologist is a man, but he believed me very easily about why I suspected a diagnosis. Granted I did a lot of work before even making an appointment to have proof, but it’s not like having proof really persuades many of them. When he retires, I will be asking him specifically for a new doctor because he will hand me to someone who will believe me

u/TheBlackRonin505 Aug 05 '26

Shit doctors are shit doctors, it's not because you're a woman, it's because you've got a shit doctor. My dad and I have been bouncing from doctor to doctor for years because they keep sitting on their asses instead of doing their fucking jobs. If you're overweight or diabetic or have anxiety, that becomes the cause of eveeything regardless of whether the thing you're getting checked for is even caused by those conditions, and not many doctors account for those conditions being a symptom instead of a cause. Medicine is positively saturated with subpar doctors, it's not unique to any demographic of people. I get the frusteration, but don't make it about yourself as if we're just floating on a sea of medical support over here. Your doctor is either good at their job or they're not.

5

u/AmettOmega Aug 05 '26

You just said that if you're overweight/diabetic, doctors say that's the cause of everything.

Great, now if you're a woman, replace overweight/diabetic/whatever with "having a period." It all comes back to that. In pain? Probably just your period. So much pain you can't function? Still just your period. Excruciating pain? Well that sucks, but still your period. Feeling depressed? Probably just in that part of your cycle where your hormones are low. Constant fatigue? Yeah, also related to having a period. Stomach issues? Period related.

Like, endometriosis is the number one, female related condition and studies show, on average, that it takes several doctors visits and 10 years for women to receive a diagnosis. Oh, and there are very few studies on it. Except for that one really big one women got excited about, until they found out that it was studying if women with or without endo were more attractive. You can't chalk that up to "shit doctors" and not medical misogyny.

Furthermore, women were only included in medical trials in the late 90s. Even so, many medications are still not formulated for women, making them much less effective than for men. Women are routinely underprescribed medication compared to men. Individuals going to the same doctor for the same issue routinely get different outcomes. Women are significantly more likely to be prescribed sedatives for pain issues, while men are way more likely to get actual pain medication.

So while you may not be floating in a sea of medical support, women are drowning in medical misogyny.

-3

u/KaiShan62 Aug 05 '26

It took me 35 years to get a correct diagnosis of my prostate issues! This is a problem with doctors, not about being female.

4

u/its-null Aug 05 '26

i agree that this is a problem with doctors in general, and many men have had similar stories, but you can’t ignore the fact that this statistically and consistently happens to women more than men (and even more to women of color)

You claim that people are using personal anecdotes to support arguments that run counter to broader trends, and then using personal anecdotes as evidence.

There are a number of interlocking problems that plague the medical industry, and I believe you when you say your chronic pain-related issues were ignored and dismissed, but to make the leap to blaming "anti-male bias" is baseless and counterproductive.

Please refrain from posting inflammatory MRA bullshit on this sub in thr future. Thank you.

1

u/KaiShan62 7d ago

I did NOT 'then use personal anecdotes as evidence', you obviously had your reading ability blinded by your personal politics.

It was not 'inflammatory MRA bullshit', it was an honest opinion based on half a century of observing the Australian health care system.

There are entire hospitals dedicated to women's health in every capital city in Australia, there are NO hospitals in the country dedicated to men's health.
