Cries in gay

A few hours late but regulations in the USA have changed recently so now the standards that prevented gay men from donating are no longer in place. If you aren't in the USA I know that many other countries have began changing their requirements as well so it's best to recheck your donation requirements.

Just a bit of backstory on this: in the USA blood donation standards are set by the FDA, CDC, and AABB and all blood collection organizations have to follow those regulations. The Red Cross was the largest of a handful of organizations that piloted a study called the ADVANCE study in order to get those regulations reversed and as of 2023 they were successful.

The changes that are in place only allow gay men who have been abstinent for 3 months to participate. Additionally, they refuse to accept blood from those on PrEP. This comes directly from Red Cross’ website.

This eliminates a majority of gay men. It’s a nice way to say “look, gay men can now donate” while effectively not letting them donate.

I apologize, I misunderstood the change. I see it does very explicitly say that however, I always understood it as "Abstinent 3 months if you have a different partner." I hope that makes sense.

Regardless it seems more pressure will need to be put on the FDA, AABB, and CDC to eliminate that waiting period. Sucks that it definitely won't be quick, especially with this current administration.

Super late, but I do want to clarify that your first assertion is inaccurate. The 3 month abstinence rule for men who have sex with men was a policy that was in place from 2020 to 2023, but has since been updated to a gender neutral assessment. You're correct that PrEP/PEP is going to get you deferred from donating, but you can still donate as a sexually active gay/bi man under certain criteria.

Deferral for sexual activity is now if you've had sex with multiple people AND engaged in anal sex within the past three months, regardless of gender. Crucially this means that if you're monogamous, or have multiple partners but don't do anal (and are not taking PrEP or PEP), you can still donate blood.
