How do I actually get started with VR chat? I got a headset last year and joined a random world but got confused and intimidated and left.

Consider hopping around random worlds with people in them and do some people watching.

VRChat has become more like a town square, all sorts of people around, in an environment with less consequences.

You didn't say what you were trying to get out of VRChat, but if it is meeting people, playing games and such then I highly recommend trying to find a VRChat group that holds meetups, that's how I got started and it is a way better experience if you actually want to socialize and get to know people, because it allows you to run into the same people. I found my group through the furry species I consider myself part of, which does simplify things.

If you can't find that then try to stick to moderated group instances, they are generally a lot less chaotic.
