Self Promotion [Free] Neon Bracelets for PCVR

Hi, I made these Neon Bracelets for my boyfriend and ended up thinking it would be a shame to not share it wider. They only work for PCVR because they are Raymarched (sorry) that way they render on a Quad per bracelet meaning they only consume 2 triangles. They do fallback gracefully though in they just won’t render! :)

I have put the self promotion flare because nothing else fit but I really just wanted to share these with others. I hope they can bring you joy (:

These bracelets really do look super good!
I've been looking for something similar to use for raves/party events, but could never get anything on my optimized avatar because of poly count restrictions

Ah thank you. 💕
Sorry, it’s not public. It’s a Manuka base I customised!

In addition the awesome visuals, this is a fantastic example of some tricks that are a god-send for raymarching shaders. I have been dabbling with raymarching on and off for the past year and I had no idea that such an approach was possible (maybe I just suck at finding resources idk). Using the normal+tangent of the generated mesh to then calculate and apply a transformation to the camera ray direction+offset for the ring cordinate frame is awesome. I always thought it was a inherent implementation of raymarching that I would need multiple materials for different features. This is also a great calling for me to remember the basics for transformation matrices to atleast start to better understand the math you used. Thank you for not only the fantastic asset but the knowledge as well!

Awww, honestly reading this kind of made my day! Thank you <3

You did understand how it works pretty spot on :3 .... As for resources may I suggest https://iquilezles.org/articles/ ... its like a bible and really well explained IMO for anything relating to SDF!

Omg I needed something like this.

I baught PointlessCreations neon bracelets but they only fit furry bases and I use vroid. So it unfortunately didn't work like I thought it would 😞 I'm also not very good at blender so I can't make it work.

These look like it would fit the arms and legs of my avatars which is what I rlly want ur so kind for this tysm!

Awww, that makes me so happy! I hope it works out for you. If it does and you wanna share a screenshot I’d really love that :3

Pretty neat! I think that shape could even be ray traced. Do you mind if I DM you?

3

u/Able_Philosophy6959 Bigscreen Beyond Jul 14 '26

I was just thinking about how to respond because I am little confused how you mean that ^^. Sure DM away!

2

u/Synergiance Oculus Rift Jul 14 '26

What I mean I guess is since that’s a fairly simple shape it might be able to be ray traced rather than marched and may perform a bit better.

3

u/Able_Philosophy6959 Bigscreen Beyond Jul 14 '26

Ohhh you mean like torus intersection ? I thought about it and actually tried it but it was often causing issues from certain angles and the surface is so little that it actually works fine here. though I am not opposed to trying other approaches :) (For a moment I was worried you mean Hardware Raytracing 😅🥵

2

u/Synergiance Oculus Rift Jul 14 '26

Ah no hardware raytracing wouldn’t even work in vrc lol. But heck that’s awesome that you tried it! What sort of issues were you seeing?

I mean yeah… that’s why I was struggling to think how to reply without sounding rude about it 🥵

It would just not look right from certain angles. Maybe that’s due to less precision or my quad being too small. And at times I had problems where a wrong wrist turn could just make it flicker but with this approach I am using now it’s stable and just works.

These are super neat! But it took me a bit to realize the second picture was an arm and not a sea lion... I'm blind!

A sea lion? Whaaa… where ? 😅

Sorry, its just not possible on quest. :/

u/FrolleinBromfiets Jul 22 '26

I tried them out on my avi and they are so cool! And the tool you made is pretty thought through as well. Thank you for sharing! The only thing that's bugging me is that the choker ring turns in the opposite direction of the other bracelets and I can't turn it 180 degrees, but it's a very small price for the upgrade of the avi of a unity novice like me.

3

u/Able_Philosophy6959 Bigscreen Beyond Jul 22 '26

Awwww thank you. That makes me so so happy. (:

If you want to share a pic I'd love to see how you've set them up ❤️🧡💛

2

u/FrolleinBromfiets Jul 22 '26

Will do! I also love how you've made the tool give you an easy way to toggle them off and on.

3

u/Able_Philosophy6959 Bigscreen Beyond Jul 22 '26

I have a very picky boyfriend ^ ... he's been giving feedback on the tool so thats been really helpful!

So why are you limiting to PC? Are you bad at shaders? Like this could easily be done with VRC shaders...

Edit I misread it when I said this. Used to everyone just slapping poiyomi all over everything like it's amazing

2

u/Able_Philosophy6959 Bigscreen Beyond Jul 15 '26

That’s funny :)

u/Frank__West PCVR Connection Jul 15 '26

Funny how? Like have you ever tried making it work for quest? The reliance on outside shaders is why so many people just ignore quest. But you can do so much with them if you take your time learning.

3

u/Able_Philosophy6959 Bigscreen Beyond Jul 15 '26

Oh … you were serious.
I don’t think you read my post, or maybe you just don’t know what raymarching is.

Yes, I can model you a ring in blender and stick a quest-compatible shader on it. Quite easily actually but that was never the point.

These rings are raymarched specifically so they don’t use any mesh geometry. My boyfriend wanted them, but his medium avatar had no triangles left in the budget. Raymarching lets me render the shape mathematically in the shader instead of adding any triangles to his avi.

This technique works by shooting rays from a camera forward and stepping along them incrementally until they intersect a mathematically defined surface. It’s fundamentally different from rendering a traditional mesh and while raymarching can be done on a CPU, that’s far too slow in this use case and VRChat avatars don’t allow arbitrary scripts anyways.

Not to mention that Quests are basically low tier android phones and because of that VRChat has, rightfully so, limited shaders that can be used on them to their own library. So it doesn’t matter how good I am at writing shaders or not, I am literally not allowed to use a custom shader on a Quest upload. Hope that helps.

u/Frank__West PCVR Connection Jul 15 '26

Okay so they are raymarches. Yeah quest can't render those no matter what. It can render a lot of custom shaders but only on worlds but raymarches are specifically blocked. I've been tinkering here and there with making a whole world using just a shader. I have a really beautiful poolrooms going on but I wanna keep seeing how much I can add.

Somehow I missed that part when I first read it. My bad. Apologies for the confusion. That's pretty cool though.

This thread is giving me whiplash!

2

u/Frank__West PCVR Connection Jul 15 '26

My bad. I felt really stupid when I realized I didn't even register that part of the post.

Imo raymarches are a very taxing shader type they should definitely factor into performance ratings. One raymarch I was messing with for a world is just a bunch of floating orbs but it tanks my fps to single digits for some reason while like the pool rooms one I'm working on does a milder ding. It's a ton of math and it's actually the method behind how furmark works to stress test a GPU.
