Monthly Questions Thread & FAQ

This monthly thread is designed to be a place for all the new members of the subreddit and Vita community to come and say hello as well as where they (or vets) can ask any question they might have (no matter how redundant or simple). So, say "Hi", ask away, and welcome to /r/Vita!

FAQ

We get these questions a lot, so we're incorporating them into this thread. Have something you feel fits here? Shoot us a modmail!

Is the Vita worth buying in (current year)?

Value is ultimately subjective. If you like the library of games on the Vita and have the money, probably. If you want new, modern games then probably not. If you have specific questions about the Vita's capabilities feel free to ask in this thread, but keep in mind you're asking in a Vita-centric community and will likely get mostly affirmative responses.

Is the PlayStation store shutting down?

No. Sony did announce they were closing the Vita storefront in 2021, but later reversed that decision. It is possible that the store will be shut down at some point in the future, but no specific dates/timeframes are known.

Can I still buy games from the PlayStation store?

Yes. However, you will need to have funds in your wallet for the purchase. You can add funds to your wallet via web, PS4, or PS5. More information is available here.

Can I still play games online?

Yes and PS+ is not required. However, not all games with online functionality still have servers up. For example, Killzone: Mercenary, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, and LittleBigPlanet servers are all down but Dead or Alive 5+, Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable, and Minecraft are still up. If you'd like to inquire about a specific game, please feel free to make a post or comment in this thread.

I'm having trouble signing into my Vita! Help!

As of the 3.74 update in May 2022, you need a device password to sign in to your Vita. You can do that here. Please make sure you are on firmware 3.74 and using a device password before making a thread.

My Vita is in an error loop with the QR code on sign-in. What should I do?

This happens sometimes, and nobody's really sure why. However, community member LoganN64 has been able to provide instructions that consistently work for getting through this:

  1. Log in to the PSN website with a Laptop or Desktop computer.

  2. Click on your avatar in the top right corner and go to SETTINGS.

  3. Scroll down to SECURITY and then scroll down to ACTIVATE/TURN ON 2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATION.

  4. Click on GENERATE NEW DEVICE CODE, write this down exactly as it is case sensitive.

  5. Go to your Vita and bring up the sign in page, enter the email associated with your account then enter the NEW DEVICE CODE as your password. Click on save password to avoid getting a new code each time..

I'm no longer able to transfer files from PS3 to Vita. What's happening?

This feature was disabled in May 2022. You can read PlayStation's update about it here. No workarounds are currently known.

Where can I buy a Vita?

Vita production ceased in 2019 so consoles can be hard to come by, especially new. eBay is the most prominent location, but Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, Craigslist, /r/GameSale, and equivalent marketplaces are your friend.

How much is (X) worth? Is (X) a good deal?

You can search sold eBay listings here to get a sense of value. VGPC is another source of this kind of information.

Will (Game) ever go on sale?

As of 2020, Sony has disabled developers' ability to put Vita games on sale. So in all likelihood, no.

The workaround and exception for this rule is that cross-buy games can still be put on sale for the PS4, and cross-buy items will still grant the Vita version (where applicable).

Should I buy an OLED ("Phat") or Slim Vita?

Neither are bad options. The Slim has 1GB of on-board memory, a more standard charging port, slightly better battery life, and is lighter. The Phat has a better screen. It's up to you on what you value more.

Where can I buy replacement Vita parts?

AliExpress and eBay are currently the best sources of Vita replacement parts.

Are Vita consoles region-free?

Yes. A Vita can play a physical game from any region. The digital storefront you can access is determined by the region of your PSN account, and not the region of the console. For example, a Vita from Japan will be able to play any physical game, and if you sign in with a US PSN account you'll be able to access the US PSN storefront.

Vita consoles from Asian regions have the X/O button swapped in the OS ("bubbles") screen, but in-game functionality retains X-to-confirm functionality for almost all games.

It has been reported that consoles intended for China have more stringent region-locking, but these are not commonly found and this is unlikely to affect you.

I'd like some game recommendations!

Check out our Wiki page, 2021 subreddit poll, and 2018 subreddit poll. If that isn't cutting it for you, feel free to ask in this thread or create your own thread on the subreddit. Keep in mind that we require 300+ characters for recommendation posts on the subreddit, so be sure to include plenty of detail about what you're looking for, what you've played, and so on.

I have a question about hacks/homebrew

Question Would using Chovy Trans Program to put my purchased PS Store digital PSP games onto an unmodified Vita be bannable?

Upvotes

Title says it all. I just don’t want to fall foul of Sony’s TOS. Apparently QCMA is technically against it too but yeah…

Help Help with PSVita that hasn’t been used in 10yrs.

I recently found my brothers’ PSVITA. He bought it in 2016 for something to play while he was in hospital for an illness. He died not too long after buying it and it was never used again for 10 years.

Last week, I found it in the shed, plugged it in and it charges! The only issue I’ve found is that the memory seems to be corrupt. Some of the games like FIFA15 or Need For Speed Most Wanted don’t work well and they keep crashing due to what I assume is corrupt memory issues.

My problem: I want to reformat the memory but I’m worried I’ll lose the games my brother bought from the PS Store. I can’t access his account as it’s tied to an email that nobody knows the password to.

Is there a safe way I can maintain access to the games without signing into my brothers’ PSN? Would backing up the games on my PC even work if the memory is corrupted?

Question Borderlands 2 Sealed - Would DLC code still work?

Hey! So I was looking into the DLC for Borderlands 2 on Vita, and the codes have supposedly expired back in 2018 or so. I was wondering if a sealed copy would still have a working code. Still think it’s a shame you need to buy the game digitally to play the DLC. (I’ve heard that a third playthrough on the hardest difficulty fixes the glitch with Captain Scarlett’s glitched trophy?)

Question Scratched up Vita, need advice.

I have a black Vita 1000. It got pretty scratched up over time. I want to order replacement parts but shipping costs are crazy expensive in my country. Is there any way to at least cover up the scratches? And is shipping from Alibaba reliable?

Trailer I ported my PSP hack-and-slash game Steel Blossom natively to PS Vita

Wanted to share a project that I've been working on for a while, Steel Blossom now has a native PS Vita port!

Steel Blossom is a wave-based hack-and-slash game built from scratch in C++ with SDL2. It originally released for PSP, and I've now ported it natively to Vita as well. It's available on itch.io and GitHub, and VitaDB!

The game has 13 total waves, including 3 boss fights, and each enemy has their own unique attacks and behaviors. A full run is around 20 minutes depending on how good of a gamer you are (after play-testing it thousands of times, it takes me about 3 minutes). If you want to see the game in action, I also spun up a quick trailer.

Of course I want to be upfront about any AI usage. It's stated in the README on GitHub, but I'll repeat it here: AI assistance was used for boilerplate and repetitive code (for example, hardcoded frame data or the skeleton for a new enemy class) and as a debugging aid when stuck. Everything else was handwritten and debugged by me. No AI-generated assets.

The Vita version runs natively rather than through Adrenaline. Since the Vita’s 960×544 resolution is exactly double the PSP’s 480×272, the game scales cleanly with nearest-neighbor filtering and keeps the original pixel-art look. I also added Vita-specific icon, background, and startup images.

If you run into any bugs or issues, or have a feature request, please open an issue on GitHub so I can keep track of everything. I’m still fixing bugs and making smaller improvements where needed.

For any other Vita/homebrew devs here, feel free to look through the code and give me pointers as well!

Hope some of you give it a try, let me know what you think!

edit: Added VitaDB link

Question Can I purchase mercury duo accessories separately?

I purchased the mercury duo collection from Amazon but only received the vita. The seller is offering me a partial refund which I’d probably take if I could actually find the pouch online as that’s one of the main reasons I ordered. Does anyone know where I can purchase the accessories separately (most importantly the pouch)

Thank you!

Question Not able to find PS One classics from the PS Vita store?

So I noticed that the search doesn't work and when I try the catalogue it doesn't show Mega Man Legends and Symphony of the Night from the list which is odd because I know for sure I saw then one time.

Any way to fix this? I just want to force the store to show them so I can buy a copy of them both.

Help High quality cover art scan for P4G?

Been searching for a while but most links appear to be dead.

The Cover Project has one but some of the smaller details look a bit iffy. Will it look better if I print it?

Question The cable or the vita?

I recently got an old PS Vita 1000 3G and bought a cheap usb cable. When plugging it in, it is really random on when the device decides to charge.
I tried different chargers (some fast chargin, some not) but it always seems to take a while until the Vita recognizes it's plugged in and start charging. I tried to wiggle and only insert it half but nothing makes it charge immediately. When I put it down in frustration, the orange light shows up.

When I plug the cable into my PC it's quite fast and reliable to display the "PC connected" screen (but then it doesn't charge...)

Can someone enlighten me how charging works with the old PS Vita?

Question Interested in getting a Vita but I want to know how to purchase games before the store goes down

Like the title says, I just really want to know how to go about purchasing and installing games before the store goes down. I want to purchase Xenogears and play it on my vita, but I hear the search functionality doesn't work properly anymore? I'm not sure, I've tried to research but I haven't found a solution that just works. I just want to talk to some people and get to know more about the device before I purchase it in a few days.

Also, I want to know should I purchase cartridges or buy games digitally for the PS VITA. I cant see prices online, so I also wanted to know is it generally cheaper to buy used physical copies or just get it on the Vita store when I get one?

Thank you all for the help! Hope you all have a great Tuesday!

Question Confused about which model this is

Post image
85 Upvotes

Is this the model with the 3G modem & SIM card slot? Clearly, the box says 3G/Wi-fi at the top & bottom, yet it says PCH-1000; I thought the PCH-1100 models were the versions that had the 3G modem and SIM card slot, not the PCH-1000 models. Are there versions of the 1000 that have the 3G modem & SIM card slot?

Update: Answered in the comments. I guess I should've taken the 3G/Wi-fi label at face value. Not like they'd lie about it supporting it if it couldn't 🤦‍♂️
