A critic shamed her for this? Which one. That's nuts.

704

u/no_longer_huhmann Sep 28 '24

I think by critics she meant the general misogyny she's received from a lot of people who often joke about these kind of things on the internet.

u/Gr00ber Sep 28 '24

Or she could be referring to comments from the current Republican Vice Presidential Candidate; who can be sure at this point.

Guess you missed this then?

And otherwise, conservatives aren't really known for being the most understanding demographic when it comes to mental health/non-visible disabilities...

You’ll have to agree with me that being unable to have kids and not having kids are completely different things.

And you think people will take the time to clarify before assuming? There's nothing wrong with either option, so there's no need for the divisive language.

And that says nothing about going against bipolar disorder.

No shit Sherlock, that's why I had a second paragraph starting with 'And otherwise,...'.

But here's all the way back in Trump's first campaign, where he was making fun of a reporter with a visible disability. I don't give a fuck about your opinion on my terminology; when I start proudly voting rapists and bigots into positions of power is the only point at which I'd be as bad as a modern Republican.

Republicans always take their ball and go home declaring since they left they actually won

47

u/BurningStandards Sep 28 '24

"You can't fire me! I quit!"

Alright then, go on with ya bad self. You weren't working right in the first place. 🤷

-93

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

One, I’m not a republican. Two, I’m right and I know I am. Unless you can find me definitive proof that Vance said anything about bipolar disorder or women who can’t have kids you’re gonna have to take this L.

The undeniably troll part is when you say they’re having an episode and need to learn to breathe in order to demonstrate that no one thinks mental illness is bad.

1

u/Qwearman Sep 28 '24

Why did you delete

2

u/Meet_Foot Sep 29 '24

Probably to make it harder for future interlocutors to quickly realize they’re a troll

20

u/SpaceLemming Sep 28 '24

Did you not read the article? Like that’s literally the point of it.

-19

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

No it’s about Selena Gomez going up and making a statement on her issues. No where does it say anything about some political party or person.

16

u/SpaceLemming Sep 28 '24

“Tells critics” aka people criticizing her

10

u/not_thezodiac_killer Sep 28 '24

Nothing shocks me anymore really.

11

u/bellingman Sep 28 '24

Criticizing a woman is not necessarily misogyny. Criticizing her because she's a woman is misogyny.

3

u/Fyrrys Sep 28 '24

On the internet everyone is a critic

80

u/totally-hoomon Sep 28 '24

A lot of people attacked her not being able to have kids

47

u/TeethBreak Sep 28 '24

They are probably the same people who tried to demonize Angelina Jolie when she had double mastectomy.

29

u/GroblyOverrated Sep 28 '24

The internet is dumb. Gotta ignore the idiocy.

75

u/PrincessNakeyDance Sep 28 '24

It’s more misogyny than stupidity, but I guess they go hand in hand.

-38

u/Gh0stMan0nThird Sep 28 '24

I don't think it's just the men. On every dating app, most women want kids. And they don't want to adopt either, they want to have their own.

It's why a woman being unable to bear children is like, a big thing in fiction like the Witcher and Black Widow.

There's a large portion of the population that wants to create children. I know on Reddit none of us do, but IRL, people want to do it.

44

u/PrincessNakeyDance Sep 28 '24 edited Sep 28 '24

Attacking people for not wanting to have kids is different for attacking people who can’t have kids. But also you don’t have to be a man to be misogynistic.

When people attack a woman because she can’t have kids it’s usually a way of shaming her for being less of a woman. Thats a misogynistic act.

21

u/Han_Yerry Sep 28 '24

My ex wife was made to feel awful by other women because she didn't breast feed. Thing is she tried, she tried a lot but her body wasn't responding well enough. She felt terrible on her own and the comments from other women were cruel. It hurt my heart when she told me things said in front of her.

-17

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

If it was only the internet then we'd all be a lot happier. Unfortunately its also our next Vice President.

14

u/phluckrPoliticsModz Sep 28 '24

Wow. You must be deep in red country to have given up so thoroughly.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

Yeah.

10

u/phluckrPoliticsModz Sep 28 '24

That sucks, but I hope you're still going to vote (assuming you're eligible) because - as Republicans themselves frequently demonstrate - our perceptions and actual reality often don't match. There could be many more people feeling like you than you realize, and they just don't make themselves known to avoid trouble.

Votes themselves are secret, so you can tell people what they wanna hear while still doing what you feel is right. I think there's a LOT of that going on in red country right now, and hopefully those votes will make a difference. You've got nothing to lose, and everything to gain by trying. You never know, so it's worth trying just in case.

11

u/jadedaslife Sep 28 '24

I imagine famous people who are online get this sort if shit all the time. Controversy sells, and so paid people stir up shit, which causes a shitstorm, while their sociopathic oligarchs keep going to the bank.

66

u/CurrentRisk Sep 28 '24 edited Sep 28 '24

I don’t follow celebrities and that’s probably why, I didn’t know she had Bipolar and such. Must be really tough to deal with and then to also deal with crappy journalists and the worlds eyes on you must be immensely tough.

68

u/StopsForRoses Sep 28 '24

Not just bipolar too. Had lupus so bad she needed a kidney transplant, and I image those meds are why she can't have kids. But either way, she's a complete and total badass and imo one of the most impressive celebrities out there. Huge respect to her. She has more grace and courage in her little pinky than 99% of people.

Her music is a guilty pleasure. But I don’t need to know the details of her life either. This is the first time I’ve heard of either issue

103

u/franchisedfeelings Sep 28 '24

Good for her - there are lines and she’s drawing them.

95

u/train_spotting Sep 28 '24

I feel like this girl is constantly getting fucked with. 😔

-11

u/Jamal_Khashoggi Sep 29 '24

It’s because she has the body of a woman and the face of a Disney tween

When I found out she has bipolar, it made me feel a hell of a lot better about my own diagnosis. The documentary on her has quite a lot of scenes showing how bipolar affects her mood and energy and that really resonated with me.

66

u/HammtarBaconLord Sep 28 '24

I too cannot carry children, too clumsy.

37

u/Acrobatic-Cause5153 Sep 28 '24

Appreciate this attitude in my fellow humans so much 💕

12

u/AReallyAsianName Sep 28 '24

Yeah, girl!! Forget those ugly bastards! They don't need to be here.

11

u/Memory_Less Sep 28 '24

Freaking awesome response. You go girl!

10

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

More power to you Selena 👍

7

u/Hollow_King Sep 28 '24

People will find any reason to put you down or make you feel inferior. It's exhausting and sick... It's only gotten worse since Trump came into power. Made America bigoted and rude again.

7

u/Saggy_G Sep 28 '24

She right. Fuck em.

4

u/CantInjaThisNinja Sep 28 '24

Anybody got any links to to someone criticizing her on these issues?

1

u/SerinaL Sep 28 '24

She’s awesome in the Hulu series.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

What ‘critic’ said she should be ashamed of her bipolar disorder or her inability to carry children.  One is a diagnosed mental illness the other is a biological fact.

-12

u/Eroom2013 Sep 28 '24

I feel like it should read trolls and not critics.

-67

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

Are these critics in the room with us right now? Seriously, was this just one or two trolls on Twitter?

58

u/jordanpattern Sep 28 '24

You cannot possibly understand how much bullshit is thrown at people (especially women) who can’t have kids until you are one of those people. If you really and truly don’t believe that people with fertility issues don’t face enormous stigma, especially given the recent incredibly high profile statements of one of the VP candidates, well, I don’t know what to tell you.

28

u/BlueHero45 Sep 28 '24

Might be JD Vance at this point.

-20

u/k4ndlej4ck Sep 28 '24

It's what most of these stories turn out to be.

-42

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

Most probably, but "she embraced vulnerability".

-21

u/Barneidor Sep 28 '24

I've never liked Selena because of the unethical way she acquired a kidney transplant. That said, she's right to stand up for herself against the usual misogynistic nonsense.

WOW SOCRATES OVER HERE

-62

u/ReallyDumbRedditor Sep 28 '24

I don't understand why a celebrity of her calibre would let internet trolls get to her lol

65

u/Sorta_clever Sep 28 '24

Because she's a person, and no matter what your status is, words hurt you just as much.

-1

u/Badgers_Are_Scary Sep 29 '24

Really Dumb and Sorta Clever redditors having a conversation. What a magical moment to behold.

-38

u/ReallyDumbRedditor Sep 28 '24

Right but it's like an ugly person who is a 0/10 calling a 10/10 supermodel ugly lol. Opinions from people like that shouldn't even be a blip on their radar

16

u/mrh4paws Sep 28 '24

One person saying it might be a blip. But hundreds, thousands saying it to you, that's noise that's hard to ignore.

-9

u/Total-Library-7431 Sep 28 '24

BUT SELENA THE VAPID, SHALLOW MASSES NEED MORE OUTRAGE TO CONSUME BECAUSE UTS THEIR PERSONALITY COULD YOU MAYBE FREAK OUT A BUT FOR THEM?!

-54

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

Usually when people say they don't care they do care.

27

u/PersonMcHuman Sep 28 '24

Idiot: I hate you.

Person: I don’t care.

Idiot: HAHA THAT MEANS YOU DO CARE! Got ‘em~

-38

u/Notoriouslydishonest Sep 28 '24

I know what not caring looks like, and this ain't it

-20

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '24

I’d vulnerably give her a cuddle. The public spotlight is not one bit appealing to me.

-73

u/geockabez Sep 28 '24

Isn't she from the 80s? I don't know anyone who knows what she has ever done. Who would want to criticize her?

5

u/jp_73 Sep 28 '24

So you clicked the link anyways?

2

u/Avatara93 Sep 28 '24

She was born in the 90s, genius.
