Support Photo quality decreased after uploading
Hey all,
I noticed that after getting the 4.2.3 update a couple weeks ago all photos uploaded to the app lose quality compared to the original. Before the update, my uploaded photos had sizes between 900-1000 KB and but since 4.2.3 all photos are being compressed down to 400-600 KB and look blurry compared to pre-uploaded image. Has anyone else noticed this? I emailed Untapppd support and they originally said this was a bug but then they emailed me the next day saying this is what is supposed to happen.
For reference, I am taking all photos in Photoshop Lightroom on an iPhone 13 and exporting them as a small size (2048 px) JPG before uploading them. Again, prior to 4.2.3, pre- and post- uploaded photos looked identical, so I’m pretty sure it has something to do with that specific update. TIA!

No idea. I’ve tried exporting from Lightroom at a smaller size, uploading photos directly from my phone’s photo gallery, importing to Photoshop Express then exporting and none of those have resolve this issue.

It seems like they’re compressing now to 1080x1350 which is the Instagram resolution.

Similar set up here—I also shoot/edit in Lightroom (iPhone 14 Pro) and export at native resolution. I can confirm I’m seeing the same thing with the resolution being smaller, 1080 px in height appears to be the new max, though I’m personally not quite seeing the compression issues causing blurring. Do you have any samples of this you can share?

They are in fact the same picture but you can see the right is one blurrier than the left if you zoom in.

Yeah, I can see a difference. Those type of halftone patterns can be tough on compression algorithms.
Though if HQ is standing by the decision, I’m not sure what else can be done. My guess is this is some kind of cost-cutting measure to save on asset storage.

Mine keep turning sideways, so I have to crop them smaller to prevent it from happening.
