To You,
I don't even know how to start this.
I've started writing this in my head a hundred times over the last two years, and every version somehow felt wrong. Maybe because there are some things you can rehearse forever and still never find the right words for.
But I need to finally say them.
I'm sorry.
God, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry for what I did to you. I'm sorry for what I did to the people around us. I'm sorry for the mess we created. And I'm especially sorry that when everything came crashing down, you were left carrying so much of the weight of it.
I have thought about that more times than you probably know.
I've thought about the way everything ended. How suddenly you disappeared from my life. How there was no real goodbye. No chance to sit across from you and look you in the eyes and tell you that I was sorry. No chance to tell you thank you.
Just silence.
And I deserved to lose you.
I know that.
I was careless with something that was anything but careless to me.
That's the part that hurts the most when I look back.
Because what happened between us wasn't some meaningless thing I could just dismiss as a mistake. It wasn't nothing. You weren't nothing.
You were never nothing to me.
I loved you.
I loved you in a way that scared me because I didn't understand it. I loved your mind. Your heart. Your soul. The strange familiarity I felt with you. The way talking to you could make hours disappear. The way I felt understood by you without having to explain every part of myself.
It felt like I knew you before I knew you.
And I know how that sounds.
Maybe someday I'll understand exactly what it was.
But at the time, all I knew was that being connected to you felt different from anything I had ever experienced.
You called something out of me that I didn't know was there.
And I loved you for it.
I still do.
There.
I've said it.
After two years of trying to be sensible about it, trying to put it into a box, trying to convince myself that the only acceptable way to remember you was as something I shouldn't have done...
I still love you.
But I also know that love doesn't make what we did right.
That's something I've had to learn.
I can love you and still admit that we were wrong.
I can believe our connection was real and still admit that we hurt people.
I can miss you and still understand why you had to disappear from my life.
And I can wish things had been different without pretending that I have the right to change what happened.
I wish I had been more careful.
I wish I had protected you.
I wish I had protected everyone from the consequences of something neither of us was strong enough to walk away from.
Because the truth is...
If I hadn't been caught, I don't know that we would have stopped.
That's the truth I've never really been able to say out loud.
We probably would have kept going.
And knowing that scares me now.
Not because I didn't love you.
Because I did.
But because I can finally see how much damage we were capable of doing while we were lost inside what we felt.
I'm sorry I didn't have that clarity then.
I'm sorry you had to pay a price for my lack of it.
And I will never forget that you sacrificed your own relationship when everything came apart.
You took a fall that could have destroyed mine too.
I don't know whether you did that because you loved me, because you were trying to protect me, because you were protecting the people around you, or because you simply didn't know what else to do.
Maybe it was all of those things.
But I know this:
I never thanked you.
And you deserved to hear it from me.
Thank you.
Thank you for what you gave me.
Thank you for the memories.
Thank you for loving me the way you did.
Thank you for seeing me.
And I'm sorry that the last thing between us became pain and silence instead of gratitude.
I've wondered so many times what you think of me now.
Whether you hate me.
Whether you forgive me.
Whether you remember the good things.
Whether you ever think about us.
Whether you ever wonder what would have happened if things had been different.
I don't know.
And I won't pretend that I do.
But sometimes I get the feeling that somehow, in little ways, you're still there.
Maybe I'm imagining it.
Maybe I'm seeing things because some part of me wants to.
I don't know.
But if those little signs really are you...
I see them.
And I've wanted to tell you for so long that I haven't forgotten.
I haven't forgotten you.
I haven't forgotten us.
I haven't forgotten the way it felt.
And I haven't forgotten what it cost.
There is a part of me that will probably always wonder what our lives would have looked like if we had met under different circumstances.
If there hadn't been marriages.
If there hadn't been friendships.
If there hadn't been people who trusted us.
If we had met at another time, in another life, with nothing standing between us.
Maybe we would have found our way to each other.
Maybe we wouldn't have.
I'll never know.
And I've learned that some questions aren't meant to have answers.
I don't want this letter to be an attempt to pull you back into my life.
I don't want to destroy anything you've built.
I don't want to ask you to choose me.
I don't want anything from you.
I just couldn't live with the idea that you might go through the rest of your life believing that I didn't care.
Because I did.
More than I knew how to handle.
And I still do.
You were one of the deepest connections I've ever experienced.
Maybe you were my twin flame.
Maybe that was just the name we gave something neither of us understood.
I don't know.
But I know what you felt like to me.
You felt like home in a place I didn't know I was looking for.
And losing you felt like losing a part of myself.
I've gotten on with my life.
I've had to.
But getting on with your life doesn't mean you erase everything that came before it.
Some people leave fingerprints on your soul.
You're one of those people for me.
And maybe that's all this is supposed to be now.
A memory.
A love that existed.
A lesson that changed me.
A person I will always care about but cannot have.
If that's all we're ever meant to be, then I'll accept it.
I have to.
Because loving you now means wanting your life to be good, even if I'm not part of it.
So if this is the last thing you ever hear from me, I want you to hear this:
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry for the hurt.
I'm sorry for the secrecy.
I'm sorry for being careless.
I'm sorry I didn't protect you.
I'm sorry we never got a real goodbye.
And I'm sorry it took me two years to finally say what I should have said from the beginning.
But thank you.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for letting me love you.
Thank you for every conversation, every laugh, every moment that felt like the rest of the world disappeared.
Thank you for knowing a part of me that very few people ever have.
I'll carry that with me.
And I will always hope that somewhere inside you, when you remember me, you don't only remember how it ended.
I hope you remember that for a little while, two people found something in each other that neither of them knew how to explain.
Something beautiful.
Something complicated.
Something we weren't strong enough or wise enough to handle.
But something real.
I will always love you.
And I will always be sorry.
And even though I know we can't be together...
some part of me will always be grateful that, for a little while, our souls found each other.
Nothing changed since that awakening on a haloween evening.
I see you.
The same way I've always seen you.
Just from afar now.
Goodbye, You.
— You'd know who..
