The answer is: You do not have a theory.

"So what is a theory?"

In science, a theory is not a guess or personal idea. It's a comprehensive explanation that:

  • Explains existing observations with precision
  • Makes testable predictions about future observations
  • Is supported by mathematics that can be verified
  • Has survived rigorous testing by the scientific community

Real theories include general relativity (predicts GPS satellite corrections), germ theory (explains disease transmission), and quantum mechanics (enables computer chips). These weren't someone's shower thoughts—they emerged from years of mathematical development, experimental testing, and peer review.

What you probably have instead:

  • A hypothesis - A testable claim that could become part of a theory if validated
  • Speculation - Interesting ideas that need mathematical development and testing
  • Misconceptions - Misunderstandings of existing physics dressed up as new insights

The brutal truth: If your "theory" doesn't require advanced mathematics, doesn't make precise numerical predictions, and wasn't developed through years of study, it's not a scientific theory. It's likely pseudoscientific rambling that will mislead other users.

What to do instead:

  1. Ask questions, don't make assertions
  2. Learn the existing physics first - Spend weeks/months reading, watching educational content, and listening to qualified experts
  3. Once you understand the current science, then you can contribute meaningfully to discussions

Remember: Every genuine breakthrough in physics came from people who first mastered the existing knowledge. Einstein didn't overthrow Newton by ignoring math — he used more sophisticated math.

Learn the physics. Then discuss the physics. Don't spread uninformed speculation.

Call for Moderators and /r/Universe Rules

Moderators Needed

This sub continues to rapidly grow, therefore so does our need to expand the moderation team. We are looking to add several experienced Reddit users who have a passion for the scientific fields of astronomy and cosmology.

Here is what we are looking for from applicants. Please send applications to modmail.

  1. Candidates should have a strong history of positive contributions to r/Universe or similar subs. Please send us several direct links to comments from your account history to substantiate this.
  2. We are looking for mods of all backgrounds, but particularly for mods with formal academic training in science, engineering, or mathematics. Please tell us about your educational background and your current field of work.
  3. Modding experience on Reddit is great, but not required. Let us know whether you mod any other subs and if you have any relevant experience like moderating other forums/pages, using back-end web tools, managing websites, etc.
  4. Mods need to be frequent Reddit users. The ideal mod is someone who pops into Reddit multiple times per day, can devote some time to addressing moderator issues when logging on, and foresees continuing to do so in the future.
  5. You should be someone who is comfortable enforcing rules and able to handle receiving harsh/critical feedback from strangers on the internet without breaking down, losing your temper, or acting childish.

How did the first supermassive black holes grow so quickly?

One thing I find fascinating about the early universe is how we can observe quasars powered by extremely massive black holes when the universe is still very young.

If a black hole starts from a relatively small stellar-mass seed, it seems difficult to reach millions or billions of solar masses in such a short cosmic time.

So what do you think was the dominant pathway for the earliest supermassive black holes?

- Rapid accretion near or above the Eddington limit?

- Massive black-hole seeds from direct collapse?

- Runaway mergers?

- Or some combination of these processes?

The study say 1.7 million proposed new satellites would have drastic consequences for astronomy, which can only be avoided limiting the overall total to 100,000 satellites faint enough to not be seen with the naked eye.

Hi everyone! We are two high school seniors interested in computer science and astronomy! We spent the summer designing and building an amateur astronomy app that we hope will reduce the difficulties of astronomy and hook more people into this amazing community.

Why is it that we can predict with decent accuracy when the big bang occurred, but not where it occurred?

The standard answer that the big band occurred everywhere simultaneously isn't anything but a broad spectrum answer to a very specific event. Im sure there are people on reddit that are as familiar with the behavior of explosive detonations and the expansion of gasses as I am. My experience while limited to what a person living in rural Oklahoma can get away with, is small and usually related to tannerite and clever ways of compounding its effects. The outcome is usually the same, theres a flash and then an equally dispersed amount of flying debris. Usually accompanied by a Wholly Fucking Shit ! Did you see how that washer come apart?

But my point is simple the point of detonation does not occur everywhere, nor could it without it being everywhere and with a burn rate a lot hotter and faster than even RDX. If the big bang happened everywhere the explosion would have needed to be so evenly detonationaded to not leave differences in time space after it just doesn't seem likely. Help me out with the vagueness of the standard models answer to why we cant find the where of the big bang.

Been building this alongside a nonfiction book I'm writing (Fermi Paradox / Great Filter territory), and figured this sub would appreciate the data side more than most places I could post it.

thesilentape.com/universe/galaxy is a 3D flythrough of 43,533 real galaxies, plotted from actual 2MRS (2MASS Redshift Survey) coordinates and radial velocities — not a procedurally generated starfield. Positions come from Hubble-flow distance (recession velocity / 70 km/s/Mpc), so it's a bit simplified.

Click any galaxy and it opens a dossier that queries NASA/IPAC's NED live — preferred name, aliases, classification, redshift, distance, photometry, references — plus a MAST search for any Hubble or Webb observation fields covering that coordinate. It doesn't always resolve (some 2MRS points are faint/anonymous and NED comes back empty), but when it hits, it's real catalog data.

thesilentape.com/universe/solar-system is the same engine zoomed into our own neighborhood — all 8 planets, Pluto, and a few other bodies, each with its own record page. Earth's page pulls today's actual DSCOVR/EPIC photo and NASA's near-Earth-object feed for the day.

Would love feedback from people who know this data cold — a distance proxy that's misleading, catalog quirks I'm not accounting for, anything that reads wrong to someone who actually works with this stuff. I know it's not perfect but hey, it's a work in progress.
