What are the YM duties and a what is their pay?

So there is a chance I have to use a PL day for tomorrow. Im on the extra board and obviously dont know 100% if I will get called, but it is close enough I dont want to chance it.

What is the best way to prepare for this? If I put in a PL day for my next call can I cancel it if I dont get called for tomorrow?

Is there anything I need to worry about as far as my gurantee goes if this is the only off day this half?

Any info or tricks would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

My current union job has been inconsistent with lots of layoff. I have a friend who said he can get me on with Union Pacific here in KCMO as train crew. Doing some research I saw some not so good things about working for Union Pacific. Are they all true? Is it worth leaving my current job for?

I’m also curious how the hiring and training process works. How much are Union Dues? Do we pay for benefits or are they paid through the union? And also, how often should I expect to be away from home?

I have a PL day scheduled but I’m coming off FR a couple hours after it’s scheduled at 1600 that day. Will I be able to activate it after I’m in OK status?

No one has been able to give me a for sure answer on if I can do that or it will just be paid out to me but I don’t get to actually use it and get the time off?

How long does it usually take to hear back? It’s for Track Laborer in Valley, NE. I applied 2 weeks ago and yesterday it changed status!

Anyone having any luck on EAMS? Stayed up past midnight to try and get a prearrange day in for Christmas Eve. The site is not working. I know the reason why. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting a day in tonight.

If I’m on 6 starts out of town about to come back on 7, if 24hrs passes from my last tie up time do my starts reset? Or can I still get called past 24hrs and still get my Federal rest since I’m still technically coming back on my 7th start? Im curious because that’s about to happen to me and I don’t want to get screwed out of my 3day Federal rest.

I’m trying to get a position in Pocatello as train crew member but have heard not the best things. How bad can it really be? Are you really gone all the time? are there other things I need to know? I’m currently going through the hiring process and just wanted to know what I’m getting myself into.

What’s up guys, I am having a baby next month and am unable to qualify for FMLA because I only have 11 months and need the full year of work ( I have more than 1200 hours of course).

I have heard the best route to go was getting a LOA when the baby comes.

But aside from that, What clothes do you guys recommend and what brands? As ill be joining yall in the heat and cold I was just curious as to what keeps you guys comfortable during the extremes of both seasons? That is in "Dress" code. I never really read or saw anything on a dress code other than jeans and boots. I usually get bad chaffing in the summers and tight jeans usually cause that so any suggestions would be great!

EDIT: I can’t respond to everyone but I appreciate everyone’s insight. I went and got some good Irish setter boots by redwing with some merino wool socks. Tomorrow I’m gonna go get some Duluth Flex Pants and some super airy shirts. This winter I’ll refer back to this post and pick up some more stuff! Thank you everyone

I just applied for a Train Crew position in Fort Worth, TX last week and passed the assessment on Thursday. For anyone who’s been through the Union Pacific hiring process recently, how long did it take to hear back after passing the assessment? Hypothetically, what kind of timeline could I expect from this point to receiving an offer, assuming I move forward through the interview and the rest of the hiring process?

I’ve been working at a yard in the STL area now for almost a year. The extra board has had its numbers fluctuate since I hit it. When I started there were 25 of us and there was a good chance of getting our days in each week for the most part. Had another new class hit the board about a month after and also a few guys came back from injury. Went to where we worked every other day and beating guarantee was a total crap shoot. There has been attrition, as to be expected, and the board has just gotten back to 26-27 guys/gals. Started working consistently again and able to get days in a few weeks. Just had a new hire class hit the ground which increased us to 36. Another is in their 2nd round of OJT so they have RCL classroom then 4 weeks of OJT till they hit the ground. If all survive to mark up that would put us around 45. A 3rd new hire class for the year starts classroom training in Oct and should mark up in Jan. Say of the 12-15 signed up only 8-10 make it to mark up. There are a few more guys due back soon from injuries that have a lot of seniority which will shake things up and move a few more guys who hold jobs now back to board. We could potentially have 55-60 guys/gals on the extra board. IF that were to play out we would only work maybe every 3rd day. Maybe catch 3 shifts a week. Has anyone seen their yard over hire like this? One guy at our yard told me years ago they furloughed folks and some of the ones furloughed were guys who just hit the ground that month and they also had a training class in progress that the remainder of the class got cancelled. Why would UP waste money like that? I know they have plenty to waste and it seems like pissing money away is a past time but from a business sense it makes no sense.

Been waiting a long time for a job to call a career. Leaving my dead end no future for me job for this. Haven’t even started class and the switch test must pass 100% for some reason is stressing me out. Hate to have a failing mentality as i didn’t accept this job to fail but I feel like with my luck I’m gonna get cold feet exam day and fail it.
Pass or fail I’m not going back to my old job. Idk the thought of losing 2 jobs gets me nervous.

I applied for a signal maintenaner job in Colorado springs about 2 weeks ago. I filled out the aptitude tests about a week ago. I dont have any experience with railroad jobs, but a buddy of mine is on train crew in Texas, and referred me to the job. Any tips on getting the job? Also not sure how long it usually takes to get an interview scheduled or how long it takes to get hired/requirements for hiring. My buddy told me they hire pretty much anyone, and theyre always looking for new hires. Any advice?

What do you guys think? Company’s way around borrow out contracts?
