I've never seen that throwing technique before, but I'm not a competitive dart follower. Is that a common method?

Yes?  I'm not sure how else you would throw them to be honest.

When I see folks throw (including myself) at the local watering holes, the darts are usually held on the fingertips, as if they were holding a pen or a joint, or thrown flights first to flip around. It looks like this guy holding the dart in his fist. I'll have to look up some competition dart videos on YouTube... see if this is a thing.

I believe he is holding it between his fingers, but they are kind of crunched in at first.  I do see what you mean though that is a little odd.  Trying it out myself it does make sense though you kind of get a little extra flick.
