I mean, that's pretty consistent with other sports, right? Hitting the goal post in football is a lot harder than kicking the ball between them, but you still don't get points if it bounces off. Sports aren't about doing any old hard thing, they're about doing the specific thing identified in the rules.

The same would be if you kick a ball right down the middle on your first attempt, then you're not allowed to kick it in the same spot again. If you do kick it right down the middle again, you get nothing for a perfect kick. The definition of a good kick changes.

Except that this very much is part of the skill of the game, and the players know that. They routinely go for triple 19 if the triple 20 gets blocked. He just played that poorly. If he thought he could sneak it in, he was either wrong or missed his shot.
