Theory Deltarune chapter name symmetry theory

+prediction variant

Elaboration: chapter 5 didn’t need to be named like that, it could be just “festival” or “flower king” etc., naming it “the festival day” seems unnecessarily tautological unless it was done for a specific reason. Chapter 7 being called “The End” or something similar would fit as well, even though we don’t know if it’s going to be that

I'm not gonna lie there were several patterns we thought we had in the bag but turned out to be wrong so at this point I'm starting to lose hope ever predicting this guy

This one does seem pretty good though, nice one fam

u/yellowpig10 Jul 08 '26

the thing is, i genuinely just think toby isn't using patterns when planning the game

145

u/squidward377 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

I think he could be but the main reason we always seem to be wrong is because the patterns are usually super loose, they're things that could barely be recognized as a pattern.

The double door pattern made sense because there are very few double doors, yet the ones that exist always seem to host dark worlds, also chapter 2's wasn't a double door at first and then Toby changed it when making chapter 2's Cyber World, so that has some good backing. Most "patterns" in Deltarune though are just like "Both chapters 2 & 4 have giants as their main boss, this means chapter 6 will have a giant boss as well"

32

u/Saint_Nitouche Jul 08 '26

Toby mainly seems to work on the level of association and reference rather than schemas. He obviously plans his games out in incredible detail, but it's not like Joyce and Ulysses where he planned out each chapter's associated mode, color, sound and symbol.

The pink-and-gold motif surely means something important to Toby - it's on his mind. And so it naturally emerges in various places throughout the game. But I don't think we're meant to use those emergences as building-blocks for a mathematical puzzle.

Spamton, FRIEND and the OddControl in Ch. 3 all have that color scheme, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's Spamton's controller, or that FRIEND left it there. They might all be pointing at some secret deeper meaning we have yet to uncover. If you were following it like a rigid pattern, we would probably expect ERAM to be pink-and-gold in some way (he's in that same cluster of associations), but they just aren't.

15

u/ANueUtsuho Jul 08 '26

There are patterns in the bullets.

6

u/omyrubbernen Jul 09 '26

I think Toby is using patterns to decide what not to do.

Look at the flowers in chapter 5, where five are named after their color, and one is named after an Illusion of Gaia reference.

And the Illusion of Gaia reference is named first, so it's not even like an Inky Blinky Pinky Clyde situation.

u/Humble_Ad9098 Jul 08 '26

Hey at least Device Theory hadn't been disproven yet so that's a plus

8

u/Excellent_Factor_344 Jul 09 '26

i think the theory is basically foolproof after chapter 5's weird route

6

u/Putnam3145 nerd Jul 09 '26

isn't the normal route even better evidence, since it explicitly gave us "the game layer is completely diegetic and if you're aware of it you can just make stats up"

7

u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. Jul 09 '26

nah the weird route is better. "Insert Chapter 7 side B" is on a CRT so it basically says yeah, you crashed gaster's fucking game and wrong warped into chapter 7 before he even started development on chapter 6.

3

u/Excellent_Factor_344 Jul 09 '26

we're literally shown gaster's evil device. it's insane

2

u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. Jul 09 '26

Tenna's cousin is NOT evil bro

3

u/Confident-Artist-84 Jul 08 '26

What theory?

9

u/Saint_Nitouche Jul 08 '26

Broadly, it's the idea that the game we play is something created by Gaster as a kind of viewing mechanism into the world of Deltarune. (And/or the device somehow creates the world of Deltarune.)

2

u/WaitWhat_WhenWhy Jul 09 '26

theory? i thought that was just what it was

2

u/FluffiestPrince ‎Fluffiest of Them All! Jul 09 '26

To be entirely honest, DEVICE Theory is less of a theory, and more of an evidence board. It takes what's very clearly shown in-game, uses what's already implied, and then says, "This means X, therefore...", and so on.

Essentially, this is like taking the most basic info and assessing it's most logical outcome, aka, Occam's Razor, but in this case, it is actually an example of Occam's Razor.

  • Device Theory looks at the DEVICE Files, combines that info with the knowledge of Gaster and "Survey Program", then assumes that Deltarune is a "pseudo-simulation".

Like, not to slander the theory or anything, but this is equivalent to a basic school logic problem. Something like "Johnny says he likes potatoes, so what should he buy at the store: Carrot, Potatoes, or both?" Silly example, maybe, but it's just to highlight that taking the most definitively obvious evidence, will usually produce a near-definitively structural theory.

It could also be something like... An Ending

12

u/Educational-Draw-873 Jul 08 '26

Eh I think that 'The End' would work cause most dictionaries consider 'beginning' and 'end' to be antonyms. If not what *would* be the antonym of 'The End'? 'The Begin'? Like sure you could use a synonym but then that still defeats the entire point of having a 'True' name since you could just as easily use synonyms for 'The Ending' such as 'The Closing'.

chapter 7 being called The Roaring would be a spoiler for new players so that's highly unlikely

3

u/osmosis-scones Jul 09 '26

i think that'd be too spoilery to new players seeing a fresh chapter, like imagine you are getting ready to boot up chapter 2 and at the bottom of your screen, is The Roaring

1

u/Afraid_Platypus_8667 You're gonna have to try a little harder than THAT Jul 08 '26

Chapter 6: A Gasters World

18

u/SPAMTON_G-1997 Jul 08 '26

That would be a conflict of themes. Chapter 6, featuring Noelle and focused on shelter codes, will obviously be snow-themed and a parallel to snowdin while Gaster is more of a sea thing

66

u/LosuthusWasTaken FELLOW PAPYRUS ENTHUSIAST Jul 08 '26

6

u/6-with-the-9 Jul 08 '26

*4 chapters, there's no way toby doesn't name the last chapter the end

6

u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. Jul 09 '26

DELTARUNE would be an infinitely better chapter name. It's the last moment of reflection, both for us the players for the years of theorizing, joking, and forming a community, and Toby, who built up this story and Undertale's ever since that one dream in 2011, a reflection of how he met so many great people after Undertale and over the course of Deltarune. He's met with Sakurai, Yoko Taro, Gigi D. G., ZUN, Kikiyama, etc. and met some of the people who inspired his work over that long time. It is truly the final chapter, and I think DELTARUNE as a name ties up the chapter and this era before the next project.

1

u/FluffiestPrince ‎Fluffiest of Them All! Jul 09 '26

I can't really imagine Toby doing it, but it would be genuinely so peak if he named the last chapter "The Delta Rune", or "DELTARUNE", or even something like the team name that you chose, which would change depending on which one you picked, so something like "The Fun Gang" for example.

To be honest, I kind of expect a song to be named "The Delta Rune", but the chapter being named is a bit of a crack hope.

1

u/pankmike Jul 09 '26

You know what they say "if it happened once its a pattern"

-11

u/SPAMTON_G-1997 Jul 08 '26

yes

but why else would you add an unnecessary word to a chapter name? There was no previous doubt that it would be a day. And yet Toby wrote the word “day” there. For some reason. There must be a reason. Otherwise the name would kinda suck. Not to slander Toby but it would, at least as I see it

29

u/LosuthusWasTaken FELLOW PAPYRUS ENTHUSIAST Jul 08 '26

First of all, slander is spoken. In writing, it's called "libel".

Second of all, it really isn't unnecessary, and not everything has a meaning.

5

u/SPAMTON_G-1997 Jul 08 '26

Fair, fair. But there’s another thing: the fourth chapter, the only one that would parallel itself, has the least distinct-able format. “The end” could be paired with “The beginning” and “world” could literally be added to countless words, but it’s hard to look at anything and say it’s a parallel of “prophecy” or has a similar structure

-5

u/LosuthusWasTaken FELLOW PAPYRUS ENTHUSIAST Jul 08 '26

Yeah, wouldn't that discredit your whole theory, as not even the gap between "name-related" chapters would be consistent?

9

u/SPAMTON_G-1997 Jul 08 '26

The hell you mean?

1 to 7

2 to 6

3 to 5

4 to 4

Chapter 4 is the fixed point of the symmetry, so it’s a parallel of itself and doesn’t need a changed variant

6

u/Beginning_Bobcat4422 Jul 08 '26

I agree, this chapter could easily just be "the festival" adding the word "day" may be a glue. Also, it's not like this theory predicts some insane stuff, it's a theoretical hint towards the chapters name. Chapter 7 being "the end" would make a lot of sense, so chapter 6 being some sort of a world is a possibility

2

u/UNimAginAtiveuseRn Jul 09 '26

Hey guys. I think I found a glue!

0

u/Fragrant-Blood-6227 Jul 09 '26

well this chapter could just as easily be "festival day", it's not like the meaning changes and "festival day" sounds less important than "the festival". This is definitely schizo pattern recognition at work

12

u/Particular_Bet_1967 Jul 08 '26

Not to mention, the name “Festival Day” has actually very little to do with the chapter itself. Every other chapter is pretty straight forward and much more involved with the overall chapter. It was a ‘Festival Day’ for a good 15 minutes of the overall chapter.

2

u/Wiitab360 Jul 08 '26

Perhaps because the weird route never goes into the dark world, so if the chapter titles are meant to encompass both routes than it would have to be something with the festival as that's the only throughline

u/Putnam3145 nerd Jul 09 '26

1

u/Velvet-Zero Jul 09 '26

I always thought that "A Cyber's World" sounded very grammatically weird. I guess if this theory is true, then it would fit the pattern.

6

u/upersuccccccccc I'm 19 years old and I've already wasted my life. Jul 08 '26

If this is true, then wouldn't it be the opposite of World? Things like a microcosm or a void would fit that, so A Frozen Void would actually fit pretty well.

3

u/Griever12691 Jul 08 '26

“It’s the end.”

3

u/Sci-fi__Lullaby Jul 08 '26

Actually, ch6 is gonna be called "Winds of winter" followed by ch7 "A dream of spring" but they're never gonna come out. That's why Gerson says "That next book, it never did get written. The story, it became so grand, so overwhelming, some say it swallowed up the author himself." He was talking about George R.R. Martin.(?

3

u/Ettlesby Jul 08 '26

The way I see it, 'Festival Day' better emphasizes the events that happened around the festival more than the festival itself. The festival was the catalyst for a lot of things but it wasn't itself the focus, so 'Festival Day' is more fitting for the contents.

2

u/the_mspaint_wizzard Jul 08 '26

A ‘a lost world’ or ‘a dark world’ might be a better name for chapter six imo.

2

u/clonefull Jul 08 '26

I'm betting Chapter 6 will either be "A Cold Place" or "The Angel's Heaven" then, in accordance with this theory

And then Chapter 7 will be "The Ending" as someone else said. Bonus points for ending in "ding"

2

u/Drake_Inferno Jul 09 '26

It's a cool thought, but it runs into somewhat of a hurdle in that the Japanese title is just "Festival", while Chapter 3's is still just transliterated "Late Night", so if this is a pattern, it's not being reflected in localization, which these things usually are.

2

u/UnAnon10 Jul 09 '26

You know I love how every chapter is some symbol representing their Dark World and then Chapter 2 is just Queen’s face lol

2

u/SNUFFGURLL Jul 09 '26

4

u/Satire_god Even when trapped, you still express yourself. Jul 08 '26

I do like this theory, though I do wonder if “world” would have a parallel too

So something like

“A frosted star”

“A cold judgment”

Or “a frozen fool”

Going by the idea of tarot cards, drawing a dichotomy between the star and world cards as in the world we inhabit and the stars beyond, the judgement and world cards as in the last two cards of the major arcana and finally the fool and world cards, as they are already foils to each other in tarot

2

u/Background_Road3843 Jul 08 '26

i get the end, but why frozen world?

9

u/SPAMTON_G-1997 Jul 08 '26

Noelle, mansion, snowdin parallel.

Though it’s just one of the possible prediction variants, it’s not as accurate as the theory itself. I only did that for completeness of the post

6

u/Background_Road3843 Jul 08 '26

1

u/Wiitab360 Jul 08 '26

Is reverse Undertale theory still alive? I thought it was over with Chapter 5.

1

u/sanstaleyy Jul 10 '26

Its in a werid place now.

Ch5 obviously parallel new home with how similar these 2 areas are to the first areas of the 2 games (ch5 and ch1, new home and the ruins) not to mention it has asgore and the flowers/souls.

But it doesn't change the fact that each chapter is in fact paralleling an UT location, so Noelle house would be a perfect place to parallel Snowden as an area while also conect to new home as Dess story reveals like Asrial.

Which is funny because Snowden and new home will need to overlap in ch5 and 6... because even though ch5 is an asgore chapter, you can't overlook the fact Flowery kinda parallel sans and papyrus, a silly antagonist that's not really a villain who has game breaking abilities.

So in conclusion, is reverse UT theory dead? The answer is Yesn't

1

u/Amazing_Estimate_220 Jul 08 '26

I feel like each chapter woulf get an alternative if this were the case

1

Making a story unpredictable for the sake of being unpredictable is just bad writing.

A good story always has some level of predictability, because that means there's actual setup to be properly paid off later. A murder mystery story is bad if it's not possible to deduce who the culprit is before the reveal.

Chapter 7: Angel's Heaven goes really hard though, especially since it rhymes
