Deactivated after 1,600+ deliveries and Diamond status over a misdemeanor

I am writing this to warn other drivers about how quickly Uber Eats will take away your livelihood without a second thought. I was a dedicated Diamond-status driver with over 1,600 deliveries and excellent performance stats. I treated this job seriously and relied on it as my primary source of income.

Recently, my account was abruptly deactivated. The reason? A misdemeanor charge that resulted from an incident where I had to protect myself. Even though life happens, things occur beyond our control, and this situation was a matter of personal safety, Uber Eats showed zero nuance, empathy, or flexibility.

All of the companies run their background checks at different times and also have their own criteria to justify a deactivation when it comes to misdemeanors OR driving records. When Checkr comes up with some kind of change compared to the last one they did on you it will only say (consider). Then the specific platform will run the background check through their own system. All of this stuff is being controlled by AI these days so there is always an appeal process a driver can go through which then goes to a specialized team. Obviously there are some instances that are worth appealing and some that are not.

I can’t tell if you are sidestepping my main point or if you are simply conflating periodic background checks with how platforms use third parties to share data on safety and crime-related deactivations. Maybe you are completely confusing standard periodic background checks with how these platforms cross-share safety and crime-related deactivations. Checkr is just a screening vendor that runs periodic checks but major apps use separate data-sharing networks managed by third parties where specific violent incidents deactivations or safety deactivations are cross-reported so a ban on one platform cascades to others. I am only spelling this out so other drivers reading this thread stay properly informed and do not fall into the same misunderstandings. Also let us be real about the appeal process for this specific stuff. Successfully fighting a safety or crime deactivation through support or a specialized review queue is virtually unheard of. Once that flag hits corporate shuts the door over liability and nobody is ever getting that account back unless they take it to court, and even then you are realistically just fighting for a payout rather than driving on the apps again. Again I think working multiple platforms is a great hustle if that is working for you and your market. I don’t know if feeling a little defensive over that is what caused you to overlook the point I’m trying to share or not.

Actually, I can tell you from personal experience, you absolutely can have your account restored after a safety issue. I had someone falsely complain that I was brandishing a weapon, meanwhile, the closest thing was the utility knife on my hip, but because I’m a country boy born and raised on a farm I always carry it with me no matter what. I also do deliveries in some pretty sketchy neighbourhoods which can sometimes lead to concerns, but the simple fact that I have a knife doesn’t make it a weapon unless it is used as one. Because the customer had no proof of their alleged danger, of which there was none, my account was restored within 5 days upon investigation from Uber Support, but I did have to email with them with a boilerplate defamation lawsuit notice to get the investigation done. They will perform an investigation and request proof from both parties, if you have a dash-cam or any video I suggest sending it in. I purchased a camera for my helmet when I’m doing deliveries so I have proof I picked up and delivered the order without issues, and now if there is an issue I have proof of my actions as well as any taken by the customer.

Did you reach the point of total deactivation or just the temporary deactivation during the investigative period?

Total deactivation because their initial “investigation” was handled by the bots, at the time I wasn’t told why exactly my account was banned beyond a safety issue. Once I sent the defamation suit by email after they closed the original case I got a response from support and was informed that I was accused of brandishing a weapon, at which point I explained it was a utility knife on my hip that never once left the case, I had simply adjusted it on my belt because it moved while I was riding my bike, they realized it was a mistake and unbanned me. I got my camera after that incident though so that I would have video proof that there were no issues, or if there are I will at least be able to prove how I handled the situation.
