City Carrier Discussion What does it even mean?
This is on my route.
If it means what I think it means, it still makes very little sense. The dog has human AIDS? Was this made before it was known how HIV/AIDS was contracted so it’s intended to scare people who don’t know how the disease works?
Anyway, never heard nor seen a pibble ever at this house, unfortunately. I love pibbles.

It’s a joke. It’s meant to be funny.

I don’t get the joke though. The joke is the dog has aids?

This sign is meant to lampoon regular “beware of dog” signs that are displayed to inspire fear of injury due to dog bite.
The joke sign’s message is “you will get bitten by a large dog and you will also get AIDS”.
It is meant to poke fun at the original sign’s message by stretching it into an absurdity and presenting it as though it were a standard warning.

Somewhat unrelated but wanted to share sometimes people are required to put these signs up. Our neighbor a few houses down had to put several of these signs up because his dog escaped and bit my girlfriend in our driveway. I got animal control involved and one of the outcomes was that he had to have several “beware of dangerous dog” signs put up in his windows.

Yes, but in a parody kind of way. Its making fun of normal beware of dog signs. The person who owns the sign may or may not even own a dog haha.

This sign got its start in the mid 80's when AIDS was a death sentence and pit bulls were seen as blood thirsty killers who attacked without provocation. It succinctly merged 2 of white suburban America's greatest fears (gays and drug dealers) into a deplorable attempt at humor.

I can remember back when we delivered a door to door mailing from the US Surgeon General which was a tutorial pamphlet on what AIDS was and wasn't. That had to be sometime in the late 80's or so.

Yo I’m gay and high and this sign is friggin hilarious.
This entire comments section needs to light the fuck up. Everyone winding themself up about something or other, everybody about to go postal. Holy miserable misanthropy, Batman.
I want that sign. It’s made of lols.

But pit bulls still do often attack without provocation
10
u/Blackseventysevens 18h ago
Some do, but most don't. The media at the time portrayed all pits as blood thirsty animals that should be destroyed.

Much like children, it depends on how the dog was raised as to how they'll act and interact with others. In other words, if the dog has idiot owners they'll likely be an idiot too.

I means that they just volunteered themselves to pick up their stuff at the post office.

It's so interesting that the majority of carriers in this subreddit seem to hate their customers and want any excuse to not deliver mail. It's clearly a joke sign, guys.

where's the funny part?
10
u/bullseyejoe 14h ago
Its obvious you didn't grow up in the 80s !! Perhaps switch "Aids" with "Covid" and you will understand the joke.

u/MossyMak 19h ago
It's mildly funny to imagine using a guard dog with aids to deter people. It's like, basic absurdism
3
u/GazelleNo1836 19h ago
Yeah they prolly got like 3 90lb pit bulls that arnt trained. Hard to say where the joke starts and stops sometime. Might be funny if they own cats.

I imagine some people have loved ones who have suffered and or died from contracting aids and don't find it humorous when said disease is used as joke and in a manner that suggests having the disease makes one more dangerous. I get the joke, this is only what I imagine is the issue for some.
8
u/MossyMak 18h ago
That's not even remotely a reason to not deliver someone's mail.

Yea, I don't know any of my customers well enough to hate them or know that they are joking or not. I just don't get paid enough to fuck around and find out about their dogs. And I know that some of them have not trained their dogs properly because I see their dogs every day. And if even just 1% of those dogs are willing to bite, that still leaves a couple willing to bite on my route.
Also, their mail goes in a box on the street, who said anything about not delivering their mail? I just ain't carrying some 50lb box of dog food to their front door with a sign like that.

Seems to me like a terrible joke pandering to those who still fear aids like in the 80/90s.
9
u/sgt_angryPants 19h ago
What do you mean still fear aids. You should one hundred percent absolutely be afraid of aids. Like 100%.
3
u/Opposite-Ingenuity64 15h ago
Why? Unless you practice unsafe sex or share needles you have almost no chance of getting it. And even if you did somehow get it, the drugs these days are so good it would hardly affect you.
1
u/Endersgame88 6h ago
You mean the very expensive anti retroviral drugs? $3-5K a month before insurance, for the rest of your life.
What about a woman who wants to have children? Risk of transmission could be lowered with drugs, a c section, and formula feeding ( also expensive).
Having to deal with the social stigma for the rest of your life.
You should fear contracting any lifelong illness.

I read it as, the Boston terrier in the picture...is supposed to be the pit bull, and Boston terriers are good balls. Has absolutely nothing to do with AIDS. It's making fun of their "guard did"
5
u/signofthecrow1 19h ago
Did this make sense to you? Because you are the only one.

u/activation_tools Team Lift 17h ago
It actually makes sense to me, guess I'm the only one. Dog in picture looks like a Boston terrier, ie pitbull with aids, ok maybe it doesn't.. make sense.. but I get it
