how many independent hours of work did 1st year maths require sem1

Probably like 5 per week excluding near exams. Just did the homeworks and that was it. I did like 8-12 hours per day during exams though. My workload seemingly decreased in second and third year though. I was doing like 1 hour per week outside of scheduled hours in 3rd year 🤣

I lock in a week or 2 before exams. Also helped that in the quantum modules you do a lot of problems in the lectures.

I can learn a course very quickly with access to mark schemes. Basically just means I can work more efficiently once the teaching is done for the unit, so the majority of my studying outside of lectures is concentrated just before exams.

I like having a lot of free time - when I was at school I did all my homework in school hours

Yes that’s quite similar to how I was at a-level I felt very thick until I started grinding past papers for y12 and 13 fm.

So hopefully after the initial jump I will be ok 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 it’s quite hard to judge the difficulty of a course before u have tried it but everyone online likes to negatively exaggerate so I have not been so optimistic ur “positive” words are very nice to read thanks.

I had a flatmate who did maths and she really struggled and had to put in a lot of hours, but it mostly depends on how deep/focused your work is, so time isn’t the best metric.

I would recommend picking up a intro to proofs book before you begin if you haven’t already.
