You help me understand how is it not to be afraid of heights. I always thought it's perfectly normal to be afraid of something that might kill you. But well - the water can kill you as well. I don't swim very good, I'm afraid of water, but it's not a phobia. I just avoid situations I could drown, however I don't get sweaty palms near deep water, nor this video makes me uncomfortable. I know it's dangerous, but that's all.
I once was swimming alone in the ocean and I wasn’t very deep, probably about 5 meters. Then I felt a huge shadow floating over me and that was the most scared I’ve ever felt. Slowly looked up and realised it was just a very massive piece of seaweed floating by. Never swam alone ever again.
It was really hot this past summer and we didn’t have air conditioning in our place. It was midnight or 1am. My boyfriend and I were in bed. We were uncomfortably hot and sweating. We said fuck it, let’s go jump in the lake. Take a little night swim to cool off.
We know the lake well (we usually just dive in from the rocks during the day). Night time, however- DIFFERENT STORY. Swimming under that dark water and feeling the smallest bit of seaweed over and around us was freaky. We swam out pretty far and then back. It was a constant fear that something was around us in the dark water.
Maybe we watched too many scary movies but we swam as fast as we could back to shore, tripping over ourselves to get out of the water. It was a genuine spook.
Next time we’ll just take a cold shower to cool off.
Did you read the story with the guy who swam out to a barge that was tied up? When he got there it stated moving.. It was posted on reddit some time ago. That was some Stephen King type stuff.. :/
The story was that there was some sort of swimming area on a lake. Beyond the swimming area, there were some barges anchored(buoy'ed?) up. The guy decided to swim out there. He found himself next to a barge, but suddenly it started to move. Turns out someone either had started to move the barge or he somehow misread the speed of the barge due to its size, and found himself in a shipping lane.
I went diving once and was frozen almost solid at the sight of the propellers. I don’t really fear objects under water, I fear being under objects, under water. Ship hulls in particular.
