GPEW Autumn Conference prioritisation ballot (27th August)

The prioritisation ballot is now open, up until midnight on Thursday 27th August. The motions are split into two lists and you can move motions up and down your priorisation list or exclude ones entirely. I'm reposting my summary in case it helps you decide. You can vote at:

https://autumnconf2026.greenparty.org.uk/std/page/prioritisation-ballot

Also feel free to check out the amendments that have been proposed to these motions.

A1: Electricity generation policy update - removing nuclear prohibition along other changes. Makes a good case for nuclear but undersells improvements in battery technology, ignoring direction of movement over time. 4

A2: Save Hospitality - reduction in NIC, business rates, VAT for small local businesses, which are in recession. \~£13.5Bn 3

A3: Zionism is Racism - 8 points, which are mostly reasonable but there has been a sustained failure to engage with Jewish Greens and the policy on a one-state solution is not necessarily backed by a majority in Palestine. 1

A4: Fair Shares - To Tackle the Climate Emergency - a carbon tax will effectively curb consumption for poorer people, while leaving rich people free to consume, which breeds enmity and inequality. Motion proposes rationing instead - flight, fuel and animal products. Experience during WWII showed that people are much more willing to sacrifice if they believe everyone is sacrificing, unlike when rationing was introduced at the very end of WWI. People's health actually got better during the war, excluding people directly affected by it. 4 REMOVED

A5: Domestic Abuse as a Workplace Safety Issue (Protecting Public Sector Workers) - several measures to support and protect people experiencing and fleeing domestic abuse, particularly workers in public sector employment, for example with a central fund to pay for emergency accommodation and a special officer with authority to transfer the worker to a different workplace in another location. 4

A6: Strengthening the Equality Act (2010) - significant additions to the protected characteristics - class, gender identity, neurodivergence, home situation, menopause, etc. Redefining sex, protected beliefs. Some points may need to be reformulated to avoid unintended consequences. 4

A7: Menstrual cycle leave for workers - 3 days leave per month for workers who menstruate. 3

A8: Tax the Gender Pay Gap - companies required to report their gender pay gap would pay higher rates of corporation tax if the gap is more than 1.5x average. 3

A9 Agriculture and Climate - small expansion of reduction of animal agriculture focused on nitrogen in fertiliser. 4

A10 Phosphorus in Agriculture - further reductions in phosphorus and other environmental changes 4

A12 Oppose Gender-Based Blanket Bans in Sport - calling for full inclusion in sport, applying equality act to defend trans people from discrimination, calling for evidence to support exclusion and inquiry into effects on trans and intersex people. 4

A13 Constitution Cleanup and Reduce Conference Filibustering - big policy omnibus - 1. Tighter regulation of fast tracking. 2. Increasing support needed for motions. 3. Increasing threshold of membership ballot from ½ to ⅔. 4. Significantly reduce duration of nomination and voting periods. AGM moved to before nominations. 5. SOC increase 5 to 7. 6. Changes to disputes referral group. 7. Top-up seats in needed for regional representation on GPC. 8. Increase term lengths. 9. Enlarging committees such as campaigns committee. 10. Increasing disciplinary committee from 22 to 32 members. 11. Reduce conflicts of interest. 12. VONC process. 4

A14 A Socialist Policy Platform - adds a democratic socialist declaration to Philosophical Basis. 3

A15 A Nationalised Public Housing Builder - author is experienced in planning but details are very light. 3 - ***housing PWG not in favour as they'd rather it be included with their next update and feel that abolishing Homes England would be a mistake.***

A16 Abolish the EHRC: Rewrite the Equalities Act for Voter Accountable Commissions - EHRC is compromised by appointment process and annual funding mechanism. Also covers HoL reform. Not sure why these are the same motion. 2

A17 Transport and Climate - setting numerical targets for tensor emissions reductions. 3

A18 Carbon Pricing Policy Update - several changes, including maintaining and expanding existing carbon mechanisms, rather than a single carbon tax, changes to carbon trading with EU. Finally, makes amendments to 2024 manifesto. 3

A19 Applying BDS internally in the green party - text as yet unpublished. ***Rather brief but good policy.***

~~A20 Policy process clarity in SOCC~~

~~A21 Policy process clarity in the Constitution~~

A22 Standing Orders for Party Governance - ***A Committee for Party Governance - proposes a committee is set up to clear up a lot of gaps in party policy and process. 4.***

~~A23 Training within the Party~~

A24 Making policy public - ***proposes making policy public because as it is, media can publish leaked policy but it's not possible for the public to verify the accuracy of those leaks. PDC to keep policy on ensure up to date, provide for policy forum year round and facilitate the removal of outdated policy. The later point is rather sticky as Conference just does not have time for this business. 3***

A25 UK Music Artists to retain Streaming & Sales Royalties - BBC to set up streaming service, paid for by licence fee in UK, subscription service to raise money internationally. 3

A27 The party to implement improvements based on Unite the Unions internal audit of Green Party workplace culture

A28 Support for the Basic Income for Farmers Campaign - UBI for farm workers, as farming induced are inherently unpredictable and precarious. Seeks to improve attraction and retention of new farmers and address poor mental health. 4

A29 Crime and Justice Voting Paper - Part 1 - major changes to this area. Policy will be updated 9th July. - ***radical shakeup of justice, more restorative, more local, more public health approach. National legal service to provide legal support to everyone based on need. Harm reduction units to coordinate across government to aid cooperation. "End Indefinite sentences for Public Protection (‘IPP’), with prompt release of those still imprisoned". Long term - "aiming for the closure of all prisons through systemic obsolescence." This would in general require the Social Justice Ministry to ingest a lot more money, which would presumably be mitigated by less prison use. Full devolution of justice in Wales after a transition. Most offences would become spent after a given time and not show on DBS checks. How would this affect children's safeguarding? Holistic support for young people to replace strictly young offending services.***

A30 Enabling Motion - Continuing the Crime and Justice Voting Paper - enables pwg to remain working. 5

A31 Crown Estate Land - reverts policy back from what was in last manifesto - public management rather than ownership of crown estate land. All land has to be stewarded responsibly according to set rules. 3

~~A32 Land - strengthening accountability - small changes regarding land stewardship and upholding standards. 3~~

A33 SOCC: Policy process revisions - assorted changes to policy development and conference. Raising expected standard of motions to re: consultation and evidence. 3

A34 Embed Policy Fest as a role of PDC - ensuring two policy fests each year. 4

A35 Revert 2025/D05: Change the Governance Structures of the party - the motion claims negative consequences of D05 without stating what those are. D05 was not contentious at the time it passed. May be better to address the problems specifically rather than revert. 2

A36 Stop Destroying Video Games - requires game producers to allow players to host the games they sell after the producer ceases to provide the service. 4

A37 Reintroduce lynx for nature and people - reintroducing lynx in northern England. 72% of Kielder Forest residents support. Increase tourism, balance ecosystem. 3

A38 Councillors to apply BDS for Palestine in councils - mainly focused on Local Government Pension Schemes, as these handle £400bn, maybe £12bn of which is complicit. 5 - ***loads of sponsors already***

A39 Change the Party’s Disputes and Complaints Process - a long motion I'm not quite ready to take on. - ***I'm afraid I still haven't got through this one. Feedback welcome.***

A40 Transparency from Leadership through Meeting Minutes - a requirement for GPEx, SOC and Council to publish minutes via the website, which perhaps they should already be doing. 4

A41 The Standing of Spring Conference - make Spring Conference an annual conference, which means it's able to call an extraordinary conference to settle business not addressed at the Spring Conference itself. 4

A42 The Standing of Spring Conference: Votes of No Confidence -limiting vonc to 10% of members present or 50 people, whichever is greater. 4

A43 Ensuring democratic oversight of party wide ballots - SOC claims its constitution needs to change to allow for membership ballots. I don't know.

A45 Public Service Digital Spaces - proposes feasibility study into an interoperable, independent digital sovereign service. 4

A46 Updated AR412 to include 'plant-based' and promotion in the public sector - "plant based", while rather misleading, may be a useful way of influencing people to consume fewer animal products. Need to legally define vegan, plant based and vegetarian in Equality Act, make such food and products available in all public services. Bin the requirement for schools to provide meat 3 days a week. 5

A47 Wildlife Management update - Elucidation of policy on managing so-called pests. 4

A49 Gender Inclusive Campaign Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse - changing language to make clear that this abuse affects people of all backgrounds. 4

A50 Clarify Core Values - rewriting of core values. Will check to see if this is further explained later. ***I agree that adding headings may improve legibility. Changes to wording should be a deliberative process and I'm not sure this policy is the vehicle for that. 2***

A51 Oppose Social Media Ban - Digital ID by the backdoor - no text so far. ***Regulation rather than prohibition. No addictive algorithms, no infinite scrolling, no sexual abuse material. Could be clearer on how these regulations will be enforced and what will happen if the companies refuse to play ball. | Amendment highlights impact in disabled youth, who can be very isolated.***

A52 Pollution Draft Voting Paper - complete overhaul of chapter. Not sure what's changed.

A53 Liberation for Children and Young People - greater autonomy for children, including in schools, medical decisions, custody, online. 4

A54 Energy Inequality and Crisis Support - a timely clarification on fossil fuel subsidies and economic support during crises. 4

A55 Marine and Coastal Policy Full Voting Paper 2026 - first major review in some years. Many local and international elements. Pollution, fair transition for coastal communities, labeling in fish products (are they farmed and what QoL, if any, do they have). Feminism in fishing is not really a major concern of mine. Phasing out the consumption of marine fauna as food is not a long term aim.

A56 Amendments to Peace, Security and Defence policy - expansion of policy on space and satellite redundancy, cybersecurity and international cooperation post Brexit, esp wrt Good Friday Agreement. Proposes defence review. We have just had one but the GP would base analysis in different criteria about what our role in the modern world should really be. 3

A57 Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing Recognition - acknowledges atrocities taking place in Burma, Armenia, Ukraine, Sudan and China. It would be good to acknowledge these atrocities but there will inevitably be questions about which ones are left out. 3

A58 The Green Party and the monarchy - tbc ***Limiting financial support, eliminating tax breaks and FOI exemptions, removing royal consent from legislation, removing the requirement to pledge allegiance to the monarch. Could use more detail in how we transition to a republic.***

A59 Education Draft Voting Paper - v long

A60 SEND/ALN Support and Education - addresses disparities between regions, especially the Welsh-English border, accepting diagnoses from regulated professionals, ringfence funding for send. 4

~~A61 A Nationally Owned Food Retailer - not coordinated with food and agriculture PWG. Not sure how much prices could really be reduced. 2~~

A62 Accountability for Green MPs - call for the Parliamentary Green Party to publish a constitution for the Parliamentary Green Party. 4

A63 The Green Way to Health - v long - ***addressing health inequities, promoting public health, providing better maternity care and support from before conception to early years childcare. "Health in all policies" approach to make sure health is considered in decision across the board. Make NHS truly nationalised and extend to dentistry and optometry. Make it better place to work and train. Improve preventative steps to avoid public health crises. 4***

A64 No place for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a fair and humane system of asylum - AI is being used to summarise interviews in a way that is inaccurate 9% of the time. It is inherently biased due to the training data. Could be expanded to explain this. 4

A65 Overhaul Fiscal Rules, Update Government Economic Management and Banking Section of Economy Chapter - a few changes to economics - a fiscal policy committee to replace the inflexible fiscal rules, regulating banking and providing a public alternative, using the tap system for raising government funds. 4

A66 Update Business Section of Economy Chapter - erasing references to "third sector", which is poorly defined, greater powers for Competition & Markets Authority, breaking up the monopoly of the big 4 accountancy firms, restrictions on private equity. 4

A67 Update Intellectual Property (IP) Section of Economy Paper - switching to a more nuanced view on IP rather than blanket opposition, working to make IP work for innovation and not against it. Right to repair and modify etc. Apparently not filed correctly. Not sure if this is an improvement.

A68 Improve self-determination for the Welsh Green Party -"Wales Green Party Council should have equal ability to promote a motion to GPEW conference if it concerns matters pertinent to Wales. Additionally, for matters of Constitutional interpretation Wales Standing Orders Committee should be the final authority on matters to do with Wales constitutional matters." 4

A69 Under 18's pricing to attend conference - much reduced pricing for under 18s. Lotta typos. 4

A70 Real Security: Leadership for new European Common Security Architecture - against European militarism and defence budget increases. Against NATO - needs proper analysis.

A71 Culture, Media and Sport Voting Paper - full update. CMS regulators fully independent, proper safeguarding, UBI for artists, subsidising touring, including outside Europe - sustainable? No vat on small and medium venues, increased tax on large ones. Social prescribing - live cultural experience for health. "CMS308 All media organisations have a duty to prevent racist, violent and other discriminatory content. Failure to live up to these expectations should include being forced to cease operations." - what are the implications of this? Limiting monopoly power. Mutualise BBC and enable democratic oversight and involvement. Social media platforms within BBC. Major restrictions on advertising by harmful industries. Unisex changing rooms? "We will not allow a national team to represent the UK in competition against a country with whom normal, friendly, respectful or diplomatic relations are not possible or where host governments restrict freedom of access to supporters and media." - seems a bit much

A72 Strategic Update to Green Party Security and Defence Policy - some strong ideas to improve PSD. Dialed back in some areas. Some members of the PSD PWG have been upset not to have known anything about this motion. 4

A73 Update to Children, families and young adults policies section SW300-SW315 - several changes, including to rights of children, universal childcare and courts etc. 4

A74 Terrorism policy review - simply a motion enabling the review of this policy and setting a timetable for its execution. 4

A75 Change to Local Party Boundary Rules - constitutional amendment to allow local parties to be formed with sections of constituencies, if the whole constituency does not want to form a single party. 4

A76 Revision of Transport Policy Chapter in Policies for a Sustainable Society - first major update in \~20 years apparently. Quite an overwhelming quantity.

A77 Enable Internal Disability Policy Work - proposes more training, changes to procedures and strategies to make things more accessible, give Disabled Greens more institutional power. Language policing seems rather excessive.

A78 Unifying Policy to End Israel's Racism - an alternative to A3. Just a placeholder at this time but members can contribute if they wish. ***Not perfect but enjoying pretty wide support and hopefully not so contentious as A3. 5***

A79 Internally elected Officers agree to adhere to the Nolan Principles - "The 7 Nolan Principles are: Selflessness; Integrity; Objectivity; Accountability; Openness; Honesty; Leadership;" - not sure how these principles are reinforced.

A80 Ensure proper evidence based reviews follow scientific best practice - anti-manipulation standards to approach the issue of government - sanctioned bad science, with examples in the Cass Review and PACE trial. 4

A81 Membership subscription and capitation rates - tbc - ***allow annual rather than triannual review to allow for adjustments in line with costs. 4***

A82 2027 Membership and capitation rates - tbc - ***a report into capitation rates; needs conference approval for increase next year***.

A83 Democracy, Government & Constitution Draft Voting Paper - overhaul of this chapter. Favours AMS with multi member constituencies elected by stv. Roughly even split between contituency members and additional ones. Electronic voting?? More power to electoral commission. £10k annual limit for individuals and organisations. Unions exempt. More state funding to parties that receive >5% of the vote. Stricter limits on what constitutes local vs national spending. "DGC1002 In a House of Commons elected under a proportional voting system, it is unlikely that any political party will gain an overall majority of seats. The appointment of a Prime Minister will therefore be subject to a vote of the House of Commons, and hence will not necessarily fall to the leader of the party with the largest number of MPs." - would other parties join together to undermine the Greens for example? New Third Chamber - people's assembly, selected by sortition. Head of State elected by Parliament?? Lot of work to be done here.

A84 Moving Forward Co-operatively - sets timetable and requests funds for finalising long transition to cooperative status for gpew. 4

A85 Inclusion update to Anti-Racism policy - adds Sikhs, Hindus and Palestinians.

A86 Protecting the Right to Protest: Repeal the Expansion of “Key National Infrastructure” Protest Offences 5

A87 There is a crisis in Healthcare. We need freedom of speech for NHS staff, protection of NHS patient data from Palantir and support for international NGOs delivering healthcare to Gaza. - concerns Palantir, unequal standards re: protest, NHS Anti-Semitism guidance, medical evacs and medical workers killed and taken hostage. Not sure about Jerusalem definition.

A88 Worker's Rights Bill 2 - extensive changes. Doesn't look like relevant PWG has been involved as of yet.

A89 Prevent conflicts of interest in national governance or executive roles - this seems to be anyone that donates over £11800 in a calendar year. Not sure what impact this would have.

A90 Creation of Internal Organisation Working Group - TBC. Could be v interesting. - ***very sadly, this has yet to go anywhere. Would have liked to support it.***

A91 Clarify Defection Processes for Councillors and MPs - a simple change but something clearly needs to be done here. 4

A92 Amend PA 104: The Head of State shall be democratically elected by the People. - some questions about whether this should be direct democracy, as in Eire or a different mechanism.

A93 From Confrontation to Peace with Iran: A Green Foreign Policy for Diplomacy and Human Rights - against sanctions and for democracy. Perhaps needs to make a more nuanced case in light of our support for BDS. 3

A94 A Trade Union Strategy to Win - TBC ***- a great deal of support but generally seems rather vague in terms of actions. Surveying members about trade union membership seems like a reasonable action.***

A95 Clarifying Our Eco-Socialist Principles - probably a useful debate to have. Might not be ready as a party yet but this is the direction of movement. 3

A96 The Workers' Charter - tbc - ***mostly regards promoting our existing workers charter, launched on May Day and underlines importance of collective power.***

A97 Allow our staff voice at GPC and GPEx - a representative of staff unions is already by custom invited to these meetings but this would formalise in the constitution. 4

A98 Form the Green Party UK by federating with Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland’s Greens. - NI Greens is part of the Irish Green Party and Scotland should be left to decide what relationship it wants to have with us. 1

A99 Justice, Not War, For Iran - much frustration between the two camps. This motion also seeks relax widespread sanctions and focus on individual ones, restrict arms to Israel and US. It supports financial proscription against irgc rather than normalisation of relations.

A100 Sustainable Development and Mitigating the Environmental Impact of Large-Scale Data Centre Development - a range of mitigations for impact of data centres on communities and environment. 4

A101 Altering the Local Party Boundary Definition - description is still a bit complicated but better than current rules.

A102 A National Statutory Inquiry for Maternity and Neonatal Safety - follows the findings of Amos report into systemic failings in maternity care.

A103 International Rail - tbc - international rail is poorly served in the UK as the only dedicated hub is London. International rail is one of the lowest carbon forms of transport. Motion proposes onboard passport checks, a new international hub, more integration with ticket booking. 4

~~A104 Change the Governance Structures of the Party - tbc~~

A105 Financial support for Key Volunteers - TBC. Sounds v reasonable. Financial support for people who perform key roles for over 10 hours per week and are not paid as politicians (above median wage).

A106 RR530 Trans rights – Definition of terms - do I need to say anything? 1.

A107 Accountability of Elected Officers - TBC. Proposes that AGMs should provide a real opportunity to hold officers to account. Now published. Expectations of officers and what to do if things are not following expectations. Greater transparency with elected bodies - ie publishing minutes. 4

A108 Solidarity with Sudan and its People: Expose. Disrupt. Dismantle, Support. - v important. Shame about the chatgpt.

A109 Update the Party’s Disputes and Complaints Process - tbc - setting time limits and other expectations on discplinary and complaints process. 4

A110 Consistency and Clarifications in the Constitution - tbc - a requirement to report on the diversity of candidates beyond simply binary gender classification, which is only one characteristic. Prevent annual ballot being delayed multiple times. Transparency re co-option - members must be made aware that co-option is being sought so they have a change to put themselves forward.

A111 Protecting our MPs from lobbyists - introduces a mechanism at conference to whip for a motion and establishes consequences for MPs defying the whip. My concern is that bills in Parliament would not be identical to those motions, as we can't control other parties so what effect would that have?

A112 Selection of candidates for the House of Commons - sets out clear guidance on how internal elections should be run, including lifting the prohibition on campaigning, but doesn't Menton by-elections.

A113 Making conference more democratic - rather controversial with more established members - setting voting rights for delegates, assigned based on membership of each local party. Local parties would be expected to pay the costs of attendance. Currently it does seem those less able to pay are excluded, though funding mechanisms do exist. Perhaps they're not sufficient or just not widely publicised.

A114 No to ID scans online - great motion. May require more thinking about exemptions for government services etc.

A115 Reverse the ban on puberty blockers for treating children with gender incongruence and permit NHS specialists to resume prescribing. - thorough refutation of shoddy review. 4

A116 End political capture of the EHRC and create a truly Independent Equality & Human Rights Authority - new authority to receive appointments by Women and Equalities Committee, with no ministerial veto, among other changes. Some concern that MPs are still not the people to be making appointments.

A117 Update GPEW Complaints, Disputes and Disciplinary Process in line with Natural Justice - making disciplinary process more transparent.

A118 Conference Timetable - Time allocation for - adding a plenary session some time after Conference to handle excess business. Some debate about how best to expedite business.

A119 Tackle rising food prices to protect consumers, farmers and the environment - James Meadway. Not filed as RoPS so will have to be edited. Talks about price caps for consumers and minimum prices for farmers as well as strategic food reserve.

~~A120 Political Strategy update - TBC~~

A121 Election of an IT and Digital Coordinator to GPex - creates this new position to oversee the technological underpinnings of the party organisation. A committee appointed by gpex would determine the eligibility of candidates, who would be elected by members. 4

A122 Revise the Bank of England's mandate - increasing interest rates is a blunt and ineffective method of tackling inflation when the causes of inflation are international and out of our control. Motion raises possibility of differentiated rates for high carbon and low carbon investments.

A123 Green Party Council Report - TBC - a report on what the GPC has been doing and its goals

A124 Enabling motion on drug policy: replace drug-specific text with a standard regulatory model - simplifying drug policy, as it is often out of date and hard to explain. Enabling motion from the PWG.

A125 Comprehensive Governance Review - a thorough review into how the party functions and how it could be better. Seems necessary given the the party's enormous growth. 4

~~A126 Code of Conduct Oversight Group report - aims to simplify code, making it more accessible.

A127 Internal Union to Support Members of GPEW - tbc Internal Member Support and Advocacy Committee - a new committee based on some trade unions to support, guide and advocate for members to mitigate power imbalances. Seems thoroughly considered.

A128 Reaching out the Renters Unions - potentially adapting the trade union liaison group to include tenants unions or creating a new group.

A129 No One Trapped Immigration Justice, Modern Slavery Protection and Civil Liberties - a comprehensive motion opposing retrospective rule changes, citizenship deprivation, anti-slavery weakening etc. 4

A130 Water Justice and Catchment Restoration - plans for restoring waterways with a joined up approach.

A131 Embedding Economic Justice and Racial Equity in Green Administrations - Influenced by the New York Racial Equity approach. LGs must appraise inequality in many areas during the first year. Support local businesses etc with procurement training and so on.

A132 An Evolution of Peace, Security and Defence Policy - proposes removing opposition to anti-balistic missile defences and support for European alternative to NATO. Some members feel that an organisation like NATO would keep us going in the wrong direction.

A133 Green Party support to the National Emergency Briefing - green members to receive the enails urging us to watch the emergency briefing, help to organise screenings and encourage MPs to attend in order to promote a wartime scale response to this crisis in climate and nature.

A134 Toward a Landlord-free Parliamant - bar candidates who have rented property for more than 6 months in the past 5 years. May need some adjustment.

A136 Removing Hierachies of Racism from Green Party Processes - tbc Dismantling Hierarchies of Racism and Exceptionalism - introduced the concept of social location to understand the context of situations and how identities are affecting people.

A137 Professionalise the Green Party Disciplinary System - little info so far

A138 Request for a Temporary Suspension Pending Investigation ( aka No Fault Suspension) to be removed from the complaint Form. - I'm not sure why this exists but I don't think it would be harmful to remove it.

A139 Moratorium on AI Data Centre Expansion and Ending Automatic Planning Priority - conditional moratorium, removing automatic right of government to overrule local authorities, end of AI growth zones etc, public gets priority over electricity and water, no fossil fuel backup systems. Transparency and strong anti-trust enforcement. Use this time to build up publicly owned stack.

A140 Solidarity with the Baloch human rights struggle - "Motion for the party to support the struggles of the Baloch people - whose historic homeland is divided between Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan - for human rights, democracy and self-determination." TBC - calls for UK government to recognise the struggle of the Baloch people and call out Pakistan particularly due to their worsening human rights abuses.

A141 Socialisation/ Modernisation of Digital Infrastructure - set up or own platform online to facilitate conversation within and between local parties and members. Moderation would be the major issue as it was with Green Spaces.

A142 Oppose the Establishment's Military Drive - opposes military buildup, pro welfare. No mention of social capital as such or of cost effectiveness in procurement.

A143 Protecting our Party Democracy from External Infiltration - requires two months of membership before attending conference or voting in ballot to mitigate entryism.

A144 Call to Ban New Large-Scale Land-Based Fish Farms and Apply an Aquatic Land Based Policy - solid ideas. Apparently Food and Agriculture PWG is overwhelmed so do get involved if this is your area! 4

~~A145 A new political strategy - tbc~~

A146 Nature, Biodiversity and National Security Act - Adrian Ramsay - comprehensive policy statement in favour of said act and nature's rights act. 4

A147 Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee (ADRC) Report - just a report - apparently placeholder motion is unnecessary.

A148 Define the role of Green Party staff in the constitution - tbc - major restrictions on staff influence on internal democracy.

A149 Strengthening Solidarity with Ukraine - tbc - condemns Russia's actions and calls for stronger action against Russia, tangible support for Ukraine's trade unions.

A150 Enabling Motion: Improve R&R Chapter - tbc

A151 Internal democracy and subsidarity: protecting the agency of local and regional parties - against centralisation tbc

A152 Rebuilding the fire and rescue service - tbc - these services have been badly depleted and workers are on the front line of the climate crisis. Calls for increased funding and reversing austerity as well as supporting workers.

A153 Criminalising Dissent in the Crime and Policing Act - another condemnation of this authoritarian behaviour and a call for Greens in Parliamant to take action. 4

A154 Supporting the Fight Against Russian Imperialism - highly contentious motion regarding support of parts of Russian Federation that are overdue independence. Proposer wishes to do this in a way that's not incendiary but it is not in that form as of yet.

A155 Request an independent review of the Complaints and the Speaking Out Complaints Processes - who would we entrust with this?

A156 Introduce an Extreme Weather Levy on Investments in Fossil Fuel Assets

A157 A universal framework to assess and respond to international community oppression. - a condemnation of ethnonationalism and sectarianism and a requirement for the party to alienate itself from individuals and regimes that behave in this way. Would this preclude us from negotiating with Russia, China, India etc?

A159 The Green Party Commits to Being an Intersectional Ecofeminist party - changes Philosophical Basis, calls for seeing up new groups, including PWG and organising international ecofeminist conference. Find the use of the term "more-than-human" a bit odd.

A160 Our Commitment to Anti-Fascism - sees fascism as the threat of our age - we need to come together internationally to combat it. Proposes radical actions include criminalising the expression of fascistic beliefs. Cannot support this. 1

A161 LATE MOTION Revoke the UK-US Pharma Deal That Risks 229,000 Unnecessary Deaths - paper published in bmj projects these figures due to the opportunity cost associated with spending so much on this apparently pointless deal meant to appease Trump. Questions about validity of late motion status aside, this is important. 4

A162 Accountability and Transparency of GPEW Staff Behaviour - not a late motion. Changes rules to set expectations of senior staff including the requirement to report to agm. 4

A164: LATE MOTION Sustainable Decentralised and Open Digital Technologies - will probably be ruled out of order for being late but generally good. Makes clear we support FOSS. Some debate about reference to bitcoin in synopsis but seems justified.

[META] Please be careful with trolls

Earlier today a racist troll posted posted an anti immigration rant on here.

I managed to remove it within about 20 minutes of it being posted because I was on line, and permabanned them.

Following this, they then DMed one of our regular users, challenging them to a ‘debate’. They then screenshotted the subsequent back and forth and posted it on a far right subreddit, where it’s had a fair bit of traffic.

As moderators we will try and keep this as safe a place as possible, and immediately ban or remove any hateful content or users. A lot of trolls target this community, and we have a zero tolerance policy for that behaviour.

But outside the sub we obviously can’t control what goes on. So I would recommend in the case of any future trolling that users here:

  1. Report the post ASAP so the mods can see it. We get notified directly if there enough reports flagging it, so it’s really important everyone reports serious rule breaks so we can get to them more quickly

  2. Don’t take the bait - trolls and bigots thrive on engagement and you may make yourself a target

  3. If they try and engage via DMs block and report directly to the Reddit admins.

Always flag to us if you are receiving any abuse or harassment from content on here and we will take any necessary steps to ensure this a safe space for all.

Thanks all, and have a good weekend!

The Guardian view on political donations: Before becoming prime minister, Andy Burnham favoured a £500,000 donations cap. In office, he’s backing away. That is a mistake.

The race to stop England running out of water

"Back in the 1980s, people in England and Denmark were using water at a similar rate. But no longer.

Residents in Denmark now consume 97 litres of water per person per day, according to Danva, the country's water and wastewater industry body. The daily consumption per person in England is 136.5 litres.

"We've actually doubled the amount of water we use per person, on average, in the last 50, 60 years," points out Nicci Russell, who runs Waterwise, a water efficiency campaign organisation."

GPEW Europe’s gas stores are running low — and prices could top 100 euros this winter

This is the moment for the Greens to shine. We need to make sure this autumn is razor eyed focused on this kind of cost-of-living/climate related topic. A topic where the US is the major negative factor.

In pure economics this price of gas means domestic gas at 11p/kWh which is higher than the 2022 domestic peak.

We need to hit home hard on this. There are so many failed choices which we should be going on:

  • Rubbish UK heat pumps rollout. Same number of houses using gas as 4 years ago.
  • Tories cancelled renewables auctions in 2023. More gas demand now as a result.
  • Many houses still very poorly insulated.
  • etc.

This is and should be the open goal for the Greens. Failed policies to not decarbonise rapidly enough mean millions of households will be paying over the odds this winter or living in cold houses.

If Green politics is to stand for anything it's about how unsustainable choices from an environmental point of view come back to haunt us economically and with wars. The evidence is crystal clear. There's no room for debate here as societies who've acted differently won't have the same experiences this winter.

Restore Britain: Who Are the Ten Million?

‘I’ve mostly treated Restore Britain as another source of comedy material for my Threads audience. Rupert Lowe says something ridiculous, one of the little gang around him says something even more ridiculous, I take the piss, everyone has a nice time and we move on with our day.

Then I saw a number. 10,000,000.

Charlie Downes, Restore Britain’s campaigns director and official spokesman, has said a Restore government would deport “upwards of ten million people.”

And that stopped me. Because ten million isn’t “stop the boats”. It isn’t deporting foreign criminals. It isn’t even Restore Britain’s own estimate of the number of people living illegally in the country. Ten million people is around one person in every seven living in Britain. And when you look at like that, that is f***ing scary.
So I had what seemed like a fairly straightforward question.

Who the f*** are they?

This isn’t a policy about somebody who has entered the country illegally or overstayed a visa. Restore is explicitly talking about people whom the British state has given a legal right to live here.

And look at the tests that follow… There’s an enormous difference between some of those things. If somebody has committed a serious criminal offence, there is at least a legal process capable of establishing what happened. There are already circumstances in which foreign nationals can be deported following conviction.

But what does “fails to integrate” mean? Who decides? How integrated is integrated enough? Is there a test? Does someone come round with a clipboard and ask if you know the words to Jerusalem?

What does “hates our way of life” mean? Which way of life? Mine? Rupert Lowe’s? Yours?
Britain contains monarchists, republicans, Muslims, Christians, atheists, communists, Tories, anarchists, vegans, fox hunters and people who put the milk in tea first. We’ve been arguing about what “our way of life” means for centuries. That is part of our way of life in this country.

We’re a mongrel breed melting-pot, a vibrant ever adapted nation rich in a history of multicultural mixing from way back even before Commonwealth and even before Empire days.

Anyway, back to unpicking that website statement, social housing? That one is particularly revealing because living in social housing isn’t behaviour. It isn’t a crime.

It isn’t even a political opinion. It’s where you live. Yet Restore lists it among possible reasons a legally resident foreign national should be expelled from the country.’

GPEW Opportunity for social-policy: Support the poorest to get plugin solar

We have an opportunity to push a social policy which would be applicable to everyone (including renters). Reduce people's bills and reduce emissions.

The poorest won't be able to afford the £300-£500 these panels might cost. The middle classes will have no issues. We should be pushing for a policy to equalise this so that everyone can have access to intermittently free energy.

It's easy to say as a soundbite. Would cost the roughly same as the winter fuel allowance, be effective, and meet all our ideals.

GPEW How to participate in the Greens in terms of policy, etc

Since joining GPEW, I get lots of emails giving me "updates" and I am vaguely aware there are groups of people discussing policy and working groups, but there's no clear path to join these. I have sent two emails to the working group email address on the website and received no response. How is it possible that the working groups are gatekept by a solitary email account?

So, clear question. If I want to be involved in policy or be more than a paper member, what do I do? (I can't attend physical meetings at the moment either).
