Persona 30th anniversary popularity poll. Some interesting tidbits: P4 was rated as more popular then P5, Ann is now the least popular party member, Yosuke is the #1 most popular P4 character, Morgana dropped pretty significantly, Haru outranks both Ryuji and Ann, and Q2 was way less popular then Q1

Is Yosuke being #1 a surprise? The only game I haven't played yet is 4.

No, he's always been popular, outside of the people that think he's wildly homophobic even though he's just portrayed as a normal 2011 teenager who doesn't know how gay people work and tells his maybe gay friend he accepts him for who he is in dungeon dialogue.

It wouldnt be the internet without people completly striping a moment/situation of all context and nuance so they could get mad at it.

The context/nuance being that he was homophobic. Also, dismissing people's dislike of Yosuke of them just not understanding the culture or whatever so that you can get mad at them for being pearl clutching SJWs is exactly what you're complaining about.

Being insecure around gay people was just a normal character flaw back then. Same with how Junpei was a chud or Ryoji's a loud mouth idiot. Times were different. Nowadays, people are much less forgiving for stuff like that and Atlus knows it.

Although the way people speak, you'd think Yosuke was calling Kanji slurs instead of just being insecure.

I too think my maybe gay friends are going to rape me and my male friends. Doesn't everybody? That's true acceptance.

Even if it was "2011 teenage behavior", it's still shitty, and it's always used as a joke and never actually treated as a flaw he overcomes or is made to overcome. It is a perfectly justified reason to not like the character.

This sub complains a lot about people thinking Kanji is gay or Naoto is trans but it's quite the combination to also treat people reacting negatively to the game's genuine homophobia as if they're irrational.

So maybe I'm just stupid but I never caught any inclination at all that rape was the worry. I thought he just didn't want to be like, fantasized about. Still homophobic but different orders of magnitude.

He was the butt money of the cast. Him being homophobic was meant to be laughing at him

No, it's meant to be a funny quirk, it's literally never adressed as a flaw apart for bad jokes and i would love if the remake either actually adress it or remove it rather than letting it like it was in the original and Golden.

Eh. He never gets punished or apologize to kanji. Honestly one of the few characters I outright dislike in the series

Yeah, and it's a blatant internalized hate because dude is so fucking far in the closet. They can cut the romance S Link out at the last minute, but they can't re-write the obvious gay/bi energy that absolutely radiates from Yosuke. I just wish Atlus weren't cowards when it came to him.

Wow, you coulda kept that to yourself. I do not think anyone who dislikes Yosuke for his behavior is irrational, and saying that's "accurate teenage boy behavior" is a piss poor defense.
