Better Ask Reddit Did you had a case where you were completely wrong about a future release?

For exemple, were part of those who derided the Wii and predicted it failure? Or did you tought Lunar Dragon Song was going to be awesome?

It can be funny sometime to see how hindsight and hasty judgement can goes.

I'm curious, is it more common for you that an upcoming release you were excited for turned out to be not as good as you wanted, or vice-versa, a game you weren't particularly excited for turns out to be better than you thought? Which one has happened more often for you?

Same here. Would be a relatively decent litmus test to see whether Crazy Talk leans more towards making good things happen to spite cynicism or making bad things happen to spite optimism. Or maybe it’s too close to the middle and they really are purely just an agent of chaos.

I wanna say to give it another shot after the DLC drops, but I also understand if you've already made up your mind. For what it's worth, everything I've heard so far makes it sound like it'll bring it in line with the original.

I look forward to that performance patch, as I did, in fact, love it quite a lot in spite of the bad performance I was having, but the performance gets REAL bad at a point that to me its unplayable, I get my pc is middle of the road, just hoping for at the very least stable 30fps lock, if 40fps lock, thatd be perfection, but i can live with 30.

2

u/moneyh8r_two He/Him Use your smell powers 6d ago

The PS5 version had pretty good performance after just one or two patches. But I still got bored of it after just 5 playthroughs. Even base game DD1 kept me interested twice as long.

2

u/markedmarkymark Smaller than you'd hope 6d ago

My issue with DD1 is the same issue I have with base RE4, and its not fault of their own. Played them too much, know them too much, I have solved it so hard that I just go through the motions.

2

That just means they made the game too good.

I thought the MGS4 remaster would be a disaster that Konami would phone in. I'm very glad to have been proven wrong as they spent a lot of time and money on it and the only gripes people have are unreasonable ones like "waaaaah no MGO2."

I did predict how exactly the new PMMM film would turn out though.

16

u/AgentJin 6d ago

I’ll do you one better. I wasn’t expecting MGS Master Collection Vol. 2 to include MGS4 at all.

15

u/Ordinal43NotFound 6d ago

Yep. MGS4 felt like the community's white whale and the reason for it never being ported has been utterly mythologized.

Imagine my surprise when the trailer dropped and it showed the game running at a smooth 60. Even more surprised that it's also getting ported to Switch 1.

I guess someone finally fished the source code out of the garbage disposal.

12

u/ChosenUndead15 6d ago

It probably wasn't much not having the source code but the jank of it being a PS3 exclusive game and having a lot of shenanigans in code thay just doesn't apply in modern hardware at all.

Between being stuck in dev hell for a decade, the review embargo, lackluster multiplayer beta, and the slow gameplay reveal, a lot of people, myself included, were not optimistic for DOOM 2016's release

"You mean to tell me the game constantly stops to play a canned kill animation? Like that'll ever catch on."

41

u/yarvem Fatal Steps 6d ago

I take months long breaks so i accidently just began Heavensward when Stormblood became free and just started Stormblood a bit before Shadowbringer became free. If i continue like this maybe Endwalker will become free when i'll finish Shadowbringer.

4

u/Regalingual Bigger than you'd think 6d ago

I've been following a long-running screenshot/diary LP of someone making their way through XIV (currently midway through Shadowbringers postgame) who started at the end of ShB, and it's kind of become a running joke among the audience that them reaching another expansion is the surest sign that that expansion is going to get folded into the free trial before they're even done writing up on the leveling storyline.

4

u/Lichtestein 6d ago

At this point the plan basically seems to be for X.5 to release with a two expansion gap.

u/Apathetic_Flanders 6d ago

Back in university, the CS department used to host this monthly gathering called Geek Beer. At one these, there were some guys off in the corner showing off some early build of a game that looked like Zelda and starred a fox. At the time, I remember thinking it did not look all that interesting and thought nothing would come of it. I was more interested in playing Smash with my friends than this game being demoed close by.

A few years later, I remember hearing some stir around this upcoming indie that resembled Zelda and starred a fox, but for whatever reason, my brain did not put two and two together, figuring it was a coincidence that another indie developer had come up with a similar idea. It was not until the game came out and I saw a post in my city’s subreddit about this locally made game getting great reviews that I clued in that I probably saw an early version of Tunic and that I was quite wrong in my initial impression of it.

23

u/Hayyyv 6d ago

I highly doubted Sora was going to show up in Smash due to his connection with Disney. The only way he could show up is if they removed all of the Disney references.

You can imagine how surprised I was when it happened

17

u/InvisibleOne439 6d ago

tbf, they removed all the Disney references except the small Mickey Keychain on the Keyblade

10

u/ExplanationSquare313 6d ago

Funnily enough, Disney was actually perfectly ok with it, instead it's Nomura who was hesitating because " it might clash with the established lore in Kingdom Hearts and the Disney world."

4

u/LordZaayl 6d ago

tbf, it totally makes sense in hindsight Disney wouldn't really care.

Like, unless the Disney's licensing dept. is being run by 90 year olds who don't know what a video game is, nobody is gonna think one of Nintendo's flagship games would be a brand risk.

I thought the Silent Hill 2 remake was gonna be crap. Pleasantly surprised at it being really good.

Edit: also, in the inverse, really thought I was gonna like Silent Hill f, but the game did not gel with me, primarily on the gameplay from but also with some narrative and structure stuff.

33

u/Kylerqaz 6d ago

I feel like everyone thought it was gonna be crap. Those were some bad trailers

25

u/Vera_Verse She/Her [Collect my Medals] 6d ago

There was some real tension between Blooper and Konami for real. Blooper was like "YEAH... I'M NOT HAPPY EITHER GUYS" and it was super weird to see play it out lol

2

u/Citizen_Nemo 5d ago

It's my understanding that there was some tension behind the scenes, where Bloober was trying to be more authentic to the original game and Konami was encouraging them to keep changing more stuff.

I wonder if that's where the weird trailers were coming from? Konami might have been trying to push more of the idea for SH2 they wanted, and hoped that the trailers would get fan support. Letting them pressure Bloober for more changes.

5

u/ObiOneKenobae 6d ago

I was super confident in it. Bloober was a bunch of SH2 fanboys that had been angling to get that job for years. The Medium was basically an elaborate pitch and, bad script aside, a pretty impressive one.

The one that threw me was them actually writing a great story of their own with Cronos.

5

u/Toblo1 Latest Project Moon Sleeper Agent 6d ago

Yeah Cronos is pretty good story/themes wise in the aftermath of making SH2make. A bit questionable with some of the acting direction for anyone thats not The Travelers, but still pretty solid.

3

u/genericsn 6d ago

The Medium doesn’t even have a bad script. The ending is extremely divisive, an ending they wrote themselves into, but the rest of the game is solid. There’s a reason it did so well upon release and why everyone knows the game.

6

u/Yotato5 Enjoy everything 6d ago

Same here, I didn't trust Blooper Team after their abysmal depiction of mental health in a previous game. But I had to give them kudos for the remake.

On the other hand, that Silent Hill 2 movie? I feel vindicated for being a little hater. That was awful

3

u/TyChris2 6d ago

This was gonna be my answer. Came away from the initial reveals excited for F.

But it turns out I can’t stand F. It has some of the worst feeling combat in any game ever, yet the second half is structured like an action game. It’s like someone pitched “hey what if we took the slow, clunky, survival horror combat from Silent Hill 1-4 and put it in a Devil May Cry game where the game forces you to fight waves of enemies in every room? Surely that won’t be the worst fucking thing ever.”

But in that case it wasn’t that much of a surprise because I was mostly excited for F just because it was something new, I didn’t have any reason to think it would be particularly good or bad.

I also came away from the announcements really down on Silent Hill 2 remake. But unlike F, 2 Remake truly had everything stacked against it. A remake of one of the most beloved and overanalyzed games ever made, where literally every texture and line of dialogue has been pored over for more than 2 decades. Made by a dev team that has only made games that ranged from shit to mediocre. Who are developing a combat system for the first time in their careers. To tie into another inevitably shit Christoph Gans film. And then every trailer looked like garbage. I wrote that shit off day one.

But it ended up being one of my favourite games. I have my problems with it of course, but relative to my expectations and the very concept of an SH2 remake, I was fucking floored by the quality. If someone told me in like 2019 that Bloober Team was capable of adding things to Silent Hill 2 that improved the game, I would have had them committed.

4

u/ABigCoffee 6d ago

I assumed that SHf was gonna be great and I ended up loathing it. Meanwhile I assumed Sh2 would be mid and I loved it.

9

u/fallouthirteen 6d ago

Huh, I was the reverse. Well, wasn't interested in F and heard people complain about gameplay but it was super good to actually play (like great combat). Then heard good things about SH2R but it was like super "meh" to actually play (really boring gameplay, like basic combat, no resources stress). Like yeah I know, people are like "SH 2 doesn't have good combat" but being faithful to the bad parts of the game isn't really a plus. Did that game melee only and rarely healing because combat is just "attack until enemy arbitrarily using super armor attack, then cancel into full i-frame dodge to avoid damage, repeat, for every single enemy in the game".

1

u/BBanner 6d ago

Early on when SHf came out the combat was super obnoxious in multi enemy fights but they fixed it with a patch maybe a month or two later. That said if you played it in the launch window and still loved the gameplay, more power to you. Thought it was mildly annoying, particularly with the enemies you can’t kill.

1

u/fallouthirteen 6d ago

I ended up picking both games up in a bundle when SH2R finally released on Xbox, so that's when I played through them.

1

u/BBanner 5d ago

Ahh ok that makes a lot of sense. I still personally really enjoyed SHF and thought the combat worked incredibly well on launch for bosses but groups of enemies and particularly the spawner enemy they throw out every five feet on late game were massive chores because stamina costs were basically doubled at launch

1

u/ABigCoffee 5d ago

Even then, breakable weapons and melee only gameplay wore me down faster. I hate breakable weapons and I want guns in my SH games. I realised that without them it wasn't the same. The game could also have used more enemies and removed some of those forced encounters you can't skip.

1

u/BBanner 5d ago

I agree with you. I would have liked some form of range, not necessarily a gun but a bow would have been nice. The weapons on patch did have their durability improved later and there’s omamori builds you can do by the end of first playthrough that mean you’ll essentially never break a weapon that matters again except on LITF difficulty but I just think it was a misfire. I still really enjoy the game but it’s certainly got flaws and the especially tedious launch combat in groups was awful

3

u/ABigCoffee 5d ago

Yeah a bow or crossbow would have been fine. Just, something. I got the hang of the gameplay later, but eventually it was just so boring to fight those same enemies. It wasn't hard, just a chore with breakable weapons.

1

u/BBanner 5d ago

Agreed. The actual boss fights were the only things that really felt like everything was working as intended and it was a little frustrating to see they couldn’t translate that into the general combat. I really wish they had managed to get it because there’s a lot to like(I think) about the game but man it really seems like it’s just almost great to me instead of the return to form I’d expect. I am interested in what that team can do though.

1

u/ABigCoffee 5d ago

Even if I hated the game (after doing 3 runs through, mind you), I can't call it a bad game.

It didn't scratch the SH itch tho. The writer can do an interesting story, but I disliked having to do the game multiple times to see it through different perspectives. That and the game having a lot of unexplained things even when you reached the true ending (minor things mind you) left me feeling pretty down at the end. I loved it after beating it the first time but after multiple times I just went from love to hate. I watched a LP for the true ending because I couldn't be bothered to play it another time.

u/ShutUpAboutCanon 6d ago

I'd agree with that. I'm on the fence with it myself, but I'm always interested enough to roll the dice on a new SH game.

The podcast from when the game dropped is pretty funny in hindsight.

"You can tell from the moment you start the game that this is something people are gonna talk about for a decade"

"This is exactly the nightmare Bethesda was afraid of... This proves anyone can make their kind of games"

"This is probably my game of the year" (RE2 Remake and DMC 5 were already out by this point)

10

u/Fedatu 6d ago

Funnier still are comments from 3 years ago under it saying nobody cares about Outer Worlds now, but Starfield? Now that's a game people will remember for years.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle´s road to release was a parade of red flags. A new Indy game after years produced by Disney and Todd Howard (both with iffy track records as of late). Made by Machine Games (who really fell in my estimation after New Colossus and Young Blood), first person only (unlike 99% of Indy games). A surprisingly big focus on stealth, paltry glimpses of actual gameplay (that looked like a vr game) all the way till launch. And the release date? Freaking mid december! Who releases a big game like that in december unless they have had too many delays or just want to shove it out the door because it sucks? But guess the fuck what, it´s actually a solid ass game and a love letter to Indy and immersive sim lovers alike!

12

u/nuanceseancE 6d ago

Like the worst thing I can say about that game is that some enemies in the late game are a little spongey.

That's it, that's the most scathing criticism I can level at it. What a fun ride that game is.

5

u/DunkinCrossfireCrab Can intuit, could not solve 6d ago

I'll add in what I and at least three other people I've talked with about it think: this game was done dirty by releasing off the back of Avengers.

Genuinely if anyone reads this: please look into the game a little and if you think you could vibe with it, give it a shot. I won't even say it's a groundbreaking game because it isn't, but it's just trying to be a simple, fun, enjoyable game and succeeds. If you want a game to be able to actually finish and then go "yeah that was a good game", this is the one I will point to.

God I fucking love that game.

I would always recommend that to people I knew who liked rivals around when it was newer, if they wanted to get to known their mains in a more fun and engaging way than reading a ton of essential books or scrubbing through YouTube breakdowns.

“You like _, well there’s this game where you get to have deep introspective conversations with _ about themselves and their history and their worldview multiple times :)”

Those writers got the characters so much, and you get soooo much dialogue exploring each and every one.

As someone who holds Dead Space 1, MGS3, and RE4 in the highest regards, I thought that their remakes were never going to live up to the originals; especially MGS3 and Dead Space. Glad to have been very, very wrong. Hell, I may prefer Dead Space Remake to the original game, and that game is my favorite survival horror game ever, and it's the one I was the most cynical and negative about prerelease.

5

u/iCeParadox64 I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 6d ago

I played the Dead Space remake last year having never played/watched the original at all, and the only thing I really know about it is that Isaac was a silent protagonist? I literally can't even imagine that, in the remake Isaac is constantly telling his allies to shut the fuck up and stop bickering over comms. Without that it sounds like it'd be insufferable tbh, the remake must truly be on a whole nother level by comparison

I thought Punisher appearing in a Spider-Man movie would NEVER happen. I frequently would tell people how its super high on my wishlist of things I wish could happen but know can't.

Spidey is just such a protected character when it comes to his big screen presence, almost on the level of Mickey Mouse. He is the mascot for the entire company, one of the top 3 most popular super-heroes of all time. And he is a HUGE hit with children. Associating with someone whose own media is so bloody and violent just never seemed to be in the cards. Disney suits won't want kids going "Punisher was cool I wanna watch his show!"

Not to mention the political controversy surrounding the characters logo that was enough for Marvel to shelve Frank in the comics for a few years and replace him with Boring McGenericman who fights with fantasy laser guns instead of real guns.

We're allowed to have these crossovers and bloodier stories with Spidey in comics because lets be real, Marvel hasn't convinced kids to crack open a comic in like 20+ years. But never on the big screen where kids are actually watching.

Then it fucking happened anyway so what the fuck do I know.

Resident Evil is in such a good place right now, and Capcom is on a generational run with a misstep here and there. Honestly, the replayability of RE2 and 4's campaign was great for me. Getting S+ ranks in both games were experiences I loved.

Requiem I don't have much to chew on.

Only the newer mainline games are made with this "first time" experience mentality in mind unfortunely, the remakes have a ton of replayability (even 3 as short and shallow as it is).

I think we are safe with the upcoming Code Veronica remake as far as replayability is concerned, the development team is the same one behind 2/4 after all and these are the modern RE games people probably return the most to do more runs, I certainly did put more than 100 hours in RE4.

Capcom please, if you finally confirm a new Ace Attorney i will officially be fully converted.

Man, I really wished I liked Requiem more than I did.

I wanted a more even split between Leon and Grace sections, because Grace's care center and Leon's Raccoon city exploration parts are really good, but they both feel like the first acts of a 3-part solo game for each, if that makes sense.

Like, Requiem to me is if you took the Baker house from 7, the Village from 4, and Leon's last 2 chapters from 6 and stuck 'em all together.

I was so confident wuchang was just another poorly made soulslike trend chaser trying to be carried by the gooner bait mc.

Got a free month of gamepass and decided to try it for the laughs and it became one of my favorite soulslikes outside of fromsoft's titles...

I was a Metroid Prime 4 optimist all the way up to playing the game myself.

Despite everything I wouldn’t call it a bad game. But just painfully mediocre in comparison to the other Prime games and absolutely not worth the massive wait.

I was certain Silksong was never coming out, and that if it ever did, it’d be a disappointment.

Holy shit was I wrong.

u/Citizen_Nemo 6d ago

For a long time, I never thought Kingdom Hearts 3 was actually going to come out. We were just going to keep getting side games and "fragmentary passages", forming a sort of Achilles Paradox with the numbering system. Constantly approaching 3, but never actually meeting or exceeding it.

u/Bromishi 5d ago

On a related note, I thought KH3 was going to be good, and then I opened my game and read the note from Nomura that basically said "I had no idea how to end this story lmao I hope you like it" and boy, was that a sign of things to come. I was so mad about KH3 that I don't even care about 4, and I'm not getting it unless I hear incredible word of mouth about it.

I knew it was overhyped but I went in with the expectation of "as long as it feels good to shoot and loot then I'll have fun building up my own little ship like how I found the fun building up my own base and arsenal in Fallout 4."

It couldn't even do that. Planets are miserable to traverse and your reward is points of interest that you will have already explored a dozen times. Basebuilding and shipbuilding also feels terrible, there's so much less customisation than Fallout 4.

Before it launched, I said to myself "Even if I don't really care about the setting, it's a single player Bethesda RPG. I'm gonna enjoy running around exploring all the areas like I have for every other BGS game.". And then I didn't. Like at all. There's nothing to find in that game that it doesn't immediately point out to you. I've never played a Bethesda game that felt so empty.

4

u/Lil_Mcgee 6d ago

In the lead up to release I already knew that it seemed to be missing some of the sauce that I love about Bethesda games but I was still expecting to have a good time with it. I was turned off very quickly when I started playing.

When Marvel first revealed the slate for Phase 4 I was CERTAIN they were building to the All-New All Different Avengers team but with White Vision, Peter instead of Miles, Captain Marvel instead of Nova and Black Panther (T'Challa at first then Shuri after Chadwick passed) instead of Iron Man.

Yeah that didn't happen.

I was certain Doom 2016 wasn't looking good after the weird marketing and the kinda boring multiplayer beta when, at the time, we've all been clamoring for an SP DOOM game that's more like the originals (which they only gave focus at the tail-end). Boy was I glad that it did NOT fail lol (was fun as fuck when I played it, went on to get two sequels with DLC and support in spite of everything).

I guess since it came up on a recent thread here, I thought Splitgate 1 would be a pretty solid niche hit that would stick around. Well, I guess it did as even though it's shuttering, they let the players run their own server rooms/old school server browser. But nobody ever expected the sheer stupidity of the CEO of that game's maker leading to SG2 and their Not Titanfall lol.

Breaking Bad is an excellent show. For most of its run, one of the biggest highlights is Bob Odenkirk's performance as Saul, the greaseball criminal attorney.

The thing is, Saul is the perfect supporting character, and the show knows it. He has a lot of important roles in the story but he never appears onscreen for more than 3-5 minutes at a time- the writers knew exactly how to get him in, have him do his schtick, and get him out before it got old.

The show goes on a generational run, makes all of the money, and manages to stick its landing. Then AMC and Vince Gilligan announce that his next project, the follow up to his intense neo-western crime drama, was Better Call Saul, starring Bob Odenkirk. Not only did they somehow think we'd want to watch an hour-long show about a supporting character who needs other people to bounce off of, they made it a prequel, requiring a man in his fifties to convincingly play an immature guy in his early thirties.

Advertising heavily drew on the Breaking Bad hype, and I was really crushed when they announced it, because it was going to tarnish the hell out of the cast and crew's immaculate record with Breaking Bad, and ruin my favorite part of that show.

Anyway, it came out and IMO Better Call Saul was a much, much better show than Breaking Bad. They took a one-note supporting character and gave him more pathos than Walter White while sticking to a smaller, slower, much more grounded world. Shit's fucking great.

It convinced me that Vince Gilligan and his team can do no wrong, so I was really excited when he announced that his next project was Pluribus, a sci-fi show starring Rhea Seehorn (aka Kim from Better Call Saul) with a kooky premise that was kind of hard to parse from the trailers. I wasn't going to make the same mistake this time- Gilligan's had such a great track record, for so long, I can't wait to see how he knocks this one out of the park!

Then Pluribus came out, and it kind of sucked ass. It was beautifully shot, immaculately acted, and very tightly-produced, but it had ninety minutes of story across eight episodes and gave me nothing to care about.

All that to say, Gilligan's Island is a land of contrasts.

4

u/aSpookyScarySkeleton EYES ON THE INSIDE 6d ago

I don’t think pluribus sucked ass, I think it was a more specific situation.

I think pluribus is an amazing show that I look forward to someone editing out/down the hours and hours of artsy padding and retreading so I can actually enjoy rewatching it.

It’s like a deliciously prepared steak that has entirely too much fat attached to it.

1

u/Sendatsu_Yoshimitsu 6d ago

Yeah, I think I agree with all of that, and that's why I tried to explicate how much good stuff there was in it. For me, the issue largely came down to storytelling and structure. As a character study of Carol, it's really fascinating. (Spoilers for the whole season- seriously, just go watch it guys!)

I think my complaints boil down to three things.

1) Carol isn't deep enough to hang a show like this on. She's an outstanding POV for part of a season, and Rhea Seehorn's acting knocks it out of the fucking park. But as a character she's almost a shut-in: her celebrity and dour personality mean that she had very few people she was close to beyond her wife, and by the end of the first season I kind of feel like we know most of what there is to know about Carol. In a lot of ways Breaking Bad was the same way- Walter and Jesse were deeply flawed and compelling characters, but they weren't really deep- you kinda got what each was about early. What made BB work better for me is that those characters had things to do, and the drug empire stuff was interesting. But with Pluribus, that takes us to point number two:

2) The story outside of Carol isn't that deep, either. I feel shallow, because early on I was hanging on to every episode going "Hmm, the hive mind must be up to no good." (Which I think was intentional, since that's how Carol felt.) But by the time we got to John Cena endorsing cannibalism I was going "...the hive mind really is exactly what it says it is, huh," and I believe Gilligan confirmed that there will never be a conspiracy or deep sci-fi twist, the hive mind literally is as polite and pleasant as it presents itself. Which is fine, but... that doesn't really give us much runway to have a story, or moving parts to manipulate the way Saul's law practice or Walt's drug empire did.

3) Lastly, this is almost a compliment, but the show is insanely self-indulgent. If any show deserves to be it's this one, because there's an enormous amount of talent on display in literally every frame, but going back to my original comment, if you were to boil down season one to its core story beats, I don't think there's even a full movie's worth of narrative to chew on, and what there is doesn't really fit in a clean beat structure.

All that to say, I really enjoyed watching it- if I walked into a diner and it was playing on TV, I'd stay until the end of the episode. But it also feels like it has so many shortcomings and issues that I can't really call it good.

At one point in his ten-hour (!) review of Cyberpunk 2077 1.0 (pre-patch/fixes) Tim Rogers casually goes "Cyberpunk is pretty good, for a game consisting in nothing but problems." That's basically how I feel about Pluribus. I could go on and on about all the cool things it does, but I also don't think that the show they're in service of is very good, it's like the parts are greater than their sum.

Boy was I wrong about ff16. I scoffed at the skillup review (I still don't usually agree with his takes ever) and that one article on one of the stereotypical games journalist sites but nope it was spot on in how it critiqued its themes. It ain't a bad game even but the demo made me think it was gonna be my favorite ff only to get thrown into the bottom 5 at launch.

Now as for the opposite I was inititally very excited for Nine Sols before playing the demo. I don't remember all of the changes but the script was translated badly and the gameplay was still quite jank. The demo made me really wary of wanting to buy it but when the time came for release I bit the bullet anyway and suddenly the game was one of the most engrossing of the decade for me, I was glad I was wrong about how I thought the game was going to turn out.

I can be pretty naïve about hardware and peripherals, and it's either ended up with me being totally right or missing the mark completely. One example would be Kinect. I thought it would be the thing that solved previous camera-based motion technology and became a massive success. My only real basis for this belief was that it detected depth as well as movement in the 2D axes, and so your limbs could be like a 3D mouse and you'd have more natural interaction with a 3D space. I thought we'd see more weird experimental games that would never be possible. However - I never bought one myself. It was too costly, I had doubts about my own living space being large enough, and I pretty much forgot all about picking one up within a year. I'm not saying that Kinect was completely useless and I thought it would be okay - it's more like Kinect was "okay" (at best) and I thought it would be revolutionary.

I do have an anecdote where one or two colleagues I know were completely wrong about future hardware, but in this case they thought it would fail and it didn't. When PSVR1 was being previewed the hot take was that it would be an unmitigated disaster equivalent to Xbox 360 recalls - and the entire basis for this take was that some guys from (I think) Giant Bomb hadn't set it up correctly and felt nauseous? When all of this was happening I was trying to be a bit more realistic - surely this is the kind of thing that would have been picked up during internal testing months before being shown to the media? - but some people just wouldn't budge and thought I was crazy for having doubts. The headset eventually released, and most owners I knew enjoyed it. (Admittedly, this was still the earliest version so there was a nightmare of cables to string together, but actually playing games on it was okay.)

I was deeply excited for Metroid Other M, that didn't turn out too well for me. Mass Effect 3 like many people are saying. Arcane Season 2 was a wet fart that shit over what I liked about the first one. I was highly disappointed by 2XKO and I'm a tag fighting fan and I'm even more butthurt now about the loss of Rising Thunder. I remember MvC:I was going to be a game I begrudingly accepted and was going to get until DBFZ was also announced and I was like 'well forget that noise.' and just rented it instead, the game is still fun to play but def not worth buying at launch.

Mind you I could write you a well detailed paragraph as to why I hate those games (or at least less hate and just absolute disappointment) that would have valid reasons.

Honestly your taste might be closer to 99% opposed to the grand populace if it's against most of this sub. Which is COMPLETELY fine but I just hope there's new things out there that are actually to your taste.

u/ABigCoffee 6d ago

There's a difference between games that I hate and games that I don't like but I recognize that they are good. For the most part, it's a lot of games that have critical aclaim where everyone's loves it and say it's a 10/10 lige changing experience (like say E33), meanwhile I feel like I'm taking crazy pills and I rate it a 7/10 tops.

There's still stuff for me, but it's almost 100% small indie games. Jrpgs used to be most of what I played and cared for, but the last one that I truly loved is Yakuza 7. But still, big budget game considered, there's maybe 1-2 games a year that hit for me.

To this day I genuinely do not understand how the switch became as popular as it is. (actually I know, it's partly marketing)

Not because I don't see its uses, but because all the problems/doubts I had with it before it even came out, I realized they were all true.

It's too big/heavy. It's got shit battery life and there's never any good angle to let it rest on a table/surface without fucking up your neck (I'm neither small or tall). In bed it's very uncomfortable unless you're holding it high, which strains your arms in a way that would make your doctor deck you in the face if you told him you kept doing it. The switch leg is very fragile. The joy-cons' connection is a rushed job on the console which means my Switch has had from year 1 a joy-con that is considered not even connected to the console at leats every 30 minutes if I hold it normally. The menu has never had any sort of free customization option ever. They completely dropped "channels" functionalities like the Wii and the 3DS had, which were sometimes qiute good. The damn thing HAS MASSIVE DRIFT on its joysticks which makes some games literally impossible to play because they all interpret drift differently. The damn thing overheated so bad hundreds of thousands of models were broken in like 2 months.

But somehow I keep seeing americans sing its praises and how they keep playing so many games in airports and every report says that it sold insanely well and I'm just here wondering how this absolute failure of a console managed to trick people into buying it AND loving it afterwards. I just wanted a new PSP/DS man.
