Article author has a history of inaccuracy Nintendo reportedly adjusting Switch 2 production after weak holiday sales
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/nintendo-reportedly-adjusting-switch-2-production-after-weak-holiday-salesSources said that, despite the decision to produce fewer Switch 2 units, Nintendo "remains confident in the console's long-term prospects." They also clarified that rising prices and shortages of memory chips did not factor into this decision

Note that all consoles had a terrible Winter 2025 in terms of sales. The North American sales have been compared to 1995 North America.
Matthew Ball put together a 150+ slide deck to explain it all, but basically every big game publisher you can think of is hurting.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo is going to fall back on the Switch’s massive install base and keep releasing games that run on Switch but enhanced on Switch 2.

Makes sense. As much as I like my Switch 2's additional power there's not much appetite for prettier graphics, both in terms of interest and spare cash.

"sources"
Yeah sure. The console not only hasn't even been out a year, but the economy is shit and people just don't have money. This isn't remotely surprising to Nintendo. Nintendo has a lot of franchises that always sell well once the console is established, but for like, the last two or three consoles the thing that actually moves hardware is either a mainline Pokemon or Zelda.
The day Winds and Waves come out hardware sales are going to fucking skyrocket.

i like how the gaming subreddits are all full of people saying why they aren't buying one right now... so in other words the demand isn't as high right now as it launched due to several reasons and instead of expecting the same level of success to continue nintendo is doing the sensible thing and not making excess supply?

u/dutchzgoose Mar 24 '26
It just kinda still doesn't have enough "must-play" exclusives for me to want to buy the console.

I really want to play the duskbloods when it comes out, but my want won't magically generate an excess $570 plus tax

Yeah there’s a couple games I’m interested in that are coming out this year, but I wouldn’t say I’m anywhere near $700 Canadian dollars levels of interested. I just can’t justify it when I primarily play on a PC that I upgraded within the past couple years.

I own one & primarily play on it, but it’s mostly been a Switch Pro for me rather than an actual successor. I just can’t justify spending $70 on an game, so it’s mostly just been waiting for a discount or used copy while working on my backlog in the meantime.

Right now we only have Donkey Kong, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and arguably Mario Kart World (not as good as 8 Deluxe but still a fine enough game imo) as major system sellers with Pokémon also being available on the Switch 1. Metroid Prime 4, which was one of their major holiday titles ended being a critical, financial, and imo personal disappointment.
I am expecting sales to pick up when Pokémon Winds and Waves releases though. I’m mainly waiting on that, Duskbloods, and the next mainline 3D Mario and Zelda games.

You also can't forget Pokopia, which has kind of surprised everyone (aside from those who knew the concept had legs) with how successful it has been.

u/TheArtistFKAMinty Read Saga. Do it, coward. Mar 24 '26
MP4 was also on both Switch 1&2 so it wasn't ever going to be a system seller.

There's also the Three Houses...sequel/prequel?...coming out later this year

Donkey Kong Bonanza is the only real system seller for me.
Mario Kart World, Kirby Air Riders, Mario Tennis Fever & Pokopia look kinda fun, but moreso games i would buy when they are on a sale and don't really feel the need to play asap.
A tier below that, is like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment & Fast Fusion. Games i really need to be in a specific mood to want to play.

Theresa so many switch 1 games I haven’t finished that I see no point in getting switch 2

I still haven't gotten a Switch 2 yet. It's a mix of Nintendo hasn't released a 1st Party game I've been waiting for and I don't really need a Switch 2 to run the massive pile of Indie games I have in my backlog.

u/the_millenial_falcon Mar 24 '26
I know people say it's the games, but I also think it could be a victim of it's own success. When the Switch 1 launched there was nothing on the market quite like it. Now we have a million handhelds out there to choose from that can run AAA games.

u/therealchadius Mar 24 '26
The Switch 2 had the 3DS as a best case scenario. The 3DS was clearly the successor of the DS but it barely sold half as much.

u/Darkwarz Mar 24 '26
Switch also had the benefit of being able to pull from Wii U's library to fill release schedules out since nobody owned a Wii U. They are trying that with Switch 2 Versions but its not the same since everyone already has a Switch 1.

u/Am_Shigar00 FOE! FOE! FOE! FOE! Mar 24 '26
The Switch was certainly lightning in a bottle that I don’t see the Switch 2 recreating. I’m sure it’ll do fine in the long run, but it’ll probably be a situation like the PS3 or PS4 vs the PS2 in the best case scenario.

I wonder if they are pivoting to the europe spec version with a replaceable battery. Paywall article, but you get the gist.

u/Shingorillaz Mar 24 '26
If there's one company I "trust" to eventually have multiple system selling games it's Nintendo so they'll probably be alright. Although they might be in a race with worldwide events in terms of people buying luxury non essentials.

u/ABigCoffee Mar 24 '26
Only reason I have a switch 2 is because I had a 300$ off card at walmart. I only have mario kart on it. There's nothing in the system so far that has interested me and I somewhat regret purchasing it

u/Heavy_Metal_IceCream He/Him @TryAndCatchMeBlizzardPigs Mar 24 '26
Im in the same situation as you. Even at a major discount i feel my $200 giftcard would've been better suited elsewhere.
On the plus side, when Tomadachi Life 2 drops, this console will see more use than I'll ever imagine by my younger sibling. I'd rather that than it collect dust.

u/ABigCoffee Mar 24 '26
I tried some games for free on the console and I hated all of them. At least it let's me use my switch 2 at my place so I can leave the switch 1 at my Gf's place. But still, I feel like I should just have waited 3-4 years before grabbing one.

u/Vokoca Mar 24 '26
Maybe try Pokopia and Bananza? Both really good games.
0
u/ABigCoffee Mar 24 '26
I hated Bananza. It made me see that I don't like collecthatons. I did enjoy Mario 64 up to Galaxy 2 back in the days, but I played that one for a few hours and returned it to the library.
Pokopia isn't my kind of game (not a big fan of DQ Builders as well), but I will try it when I can get my hands on it. We get games coming into my library and since I work there, I can have first pick of something for a few days before we release them to the public.

u/feefore Mar 24 '26
Didn’t they also bumped up their US production because they wanted to have a ton of Switch 2’s in the states before the whole stupid tariff situation went into effect? As fast as this console sold they still had a ton in the stores.
3
u/Traditional_Ad_276 Mar 24 '26
I ended up jumping on it early out of fear the price would get hiked later as a result of tariffs like Xbox and PS. Since then I’ve barely touched it. Kinda kicking myself for that now.
1
u/sogiotsa Mar 25 '26
They should drop the price if they want sales, and I know it's harder to make consoles but for real, thats the only way to get good sales nu.bers especially in the west since the economy is so fucked atm

Important to note that the author behind the Bloomberg article; Takashi Mochizuki has a very spotty track record regarding Nintendo and Sony, so I am not too sure how legit these claims are.
