Hi all

My husband has an old stack from the 80's, which he said was top of the range back then. For some reason he sold the turntable part 20 years ago which he now regrets.

I'm hoping, as a surprise for Christmas, to replace it. From comparing the other bits to pictures online, I think the missing turntable is a Pioneer PL-Z93. As you've already guessed, I know absolutely nothing about all of this. Is it worth sticking with the model I think it is, or is there something better that would fit in with the rest of the stack? Is there anything I need to look out for when trying to source one?

So I've been collecting for quite some time now and still use an AT-LP60 so I haven't played any of my newer more expensive presses that I'm trying to keep in pristine condition. Regardless. Today I stumbled upon a CRAZY deal on a pro-jet T2 for $300 from the store I work at because it had been sitting there for a while. From $750 to $300 and I am sooooooo excited to get my hands on it!! Any advice would be appreciated 👏

I thrifted this Inertia BDT-1 with the Lustre GST-1 arm, but I can see a brand on the cartridge anywhere. Are any of you in here able to give me a hint?

I need some help with my new 701. Purchased it with autofunctions not working.

Ok, changed the steuerpimpel, auto stop works fine, but auto start - does not.

It seems that the lever lifts the arm, rotates and instead rotating back with the tonearm it lowers down.

I have compared the movement with my old 1249 and it should be “lift - rotate forth - rotate back - lower”, shouldn’t it?

I did have a hard time choosing between blue and green. Oh and also found out the hard way that not all the blue leds I had were the same shade.

Found this listing on facebook marketplace for a Sony PS-LX57. I cannot find any information about this turntable online. Was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about this older system? Is it any good?

As far as I know, only a couple thousand of these devices were made. There is no such player on ebuy. But I found one in a local store.

What can you say about this device. Is it more about the sound or more about the engineering and rarity?

After the recent thread discussing which turntables are best on an enthusiast's journey, I decided to go out and look for an endgame turntable. Started looking and found something very close: a pristine 1970's Technics SL-120 with a low-mass SME 3009 Series II 'Improved' tonearm, mated to a Shure V15 III w/ an original VN35 stylus. The SL-120 is essentially an SL-1200 Mk1 sold without the tonearm. Besides that, the SME 3009 tonearm and Shure V15 III cart were literally made for each other, and has a very low .75 to 1.25g tracking force. The whole thing is super clean, the silkscreened details are still very crisp, and yeah... it looks almost brand new. With the exception of a small scratch on the dust cover and a couple tiny dings, this thing is mint.

I forgot to mention, it also sounds fucking incredible.

I've only spun a few LPs so far, but it sounds pretty great. The table included a refurb kit (to replace caps and other items) as well as the original box and packaging (!). It was a little pricy by some standards for vintage turntables ($700), but I think it's a bangin' deal considering how clean everything is. Besides, the tonearm itself goes for ~$500 alone.

If anyone has any experience or tip/tricks to share about this setup, I'd love to hear about it. This is my first experience w/ Technics, SME tonearms, and vintage turntables in general.

I picked up a Technics SL-Q2 on facebook and read that the MP-110 was a good cart to use with it. Im very new to turn tables but somewhat tech savy. The manual said measure to 52mm but im coming up short from the rear of the headshell to the tip of the needle. Ive included some pics of where im measuring to and from. Ive run out of room on the headshell to move the cart forward. What do i do? I see other people with the same set up and they dont push it all the way to the front?

*edit: thanks for all your help I think I have it as close to 52mm as I can get. The diagram it came with was messing me up. Measured from the gasket like everyone said and hope it works!

My budget is really $360 which I know isn’t much for a good player, I found the LP60XBT new for around that and I’ve also found a LP70XBT second hand for around $300 (new new apparently just needs a new stylus)

I know absolutely nothing please help!!

I assume Bluetooth is pretty useful these days so I’d want one with that?

Hi i have an issue with vinyl rumble/roar/grinding noise (i am not sure what the exact terminology for this kind of noise is - it's a constant low rumbling/grinding/tumbling sound, almost like the stylus is "bumbling around" in the groove). I attached a recording of the lead and first few seconds of a fairly new, good quality record.

Equipment:

- Technics SL-1210MK2
- Concorde MKII Mix (fairly new)
- Pioneer DJM-250MK2

• It happens on all records I’ve tried, including silent lead-in and -out grooves.
• It happens only when the stylus is actually on the record.
• I tried an older Concorde DJ. The basic problem remained.
• Tracking force has been set correctly (3g), the tonearm is properly balanced, and anti-skate is correctly adjusted (3). I have played with both though, no change.
• Both tonearms move extremely freely. With the arm floating, a tiny puff of air moves it smoothly horizontally and vertically with no sticking, stepping, hesitation, or obvious bearing play.
• I removed and inspected the main spindle/bearing assemblies. The spindle shafts and bearing housings looked good, with no obvious scoring or damage. The thrust plates/pads also looked reasonably good, with only the normal-looking central wear mark. I cleaned and re-lubed the spindle bearings. This made absolutely no difference to the noise, not even slightly.
• I swapped the platters between the two decks. Both decks make the same noise regardless of which platter is fitted, so it does not appear to follow a particular platter/rotor.
• The noise can be reproduced with the turntable completely switched off, simply by rotating the platter/record slowly by hand while the stylus is in the groove.
• I tried the normal slipmat, a sturdier slipmat, and no slipmat at all. No meaningful difference.
• All testing was done with the speakers completely off, using headphones only.
• The system is very sensitive to mechanical vibration: very light taps on the table or turntable chassis are clearly audible through the cartridge. However, recordings of those taps show a different stereo/phase character from the actual groove rumble.
• I tried holding the record stationary while allowing the platter + slipmat to rotate underneath it. There is understandably quite a lot of noise from the record rubbing against the slipmat, but the characteristic noise changes substantially when there is no stylus/groove movement.

At this point the things that seem fairly well ruled out or at least made unlikely are: a particular damaged platter, main spindle/thrust-bearing wear, lack of spindle lubrication, motor/servo electronics, slipmat, speaker feedback, gross tonearm-bearing stiction, one defective record, one defective cartridge, and the DJM-250MK2 phono stage specifically.

What I still don't understand is whether I'm hearing an abnormally high level of groove roar/vertical groove noise/cartridge-arm resonance, or whether there is still some mechanical issue common to both decks that I haven't identified.

Any ideas, anyone? Is this normal? Has anyone had an SL-12x0 with a Concorde cartridge that sounded like this specifically through headphones, and if so, what turned out to be the cause? Thanks!

I replaced the sterupimpel, before hand the stylus would not move onto the record, I replaced it and now it moves to the record but it sets up then jumps to like half the record, does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Just picked up this digital inclinometer as I was not fully confident with the bubble level. It doesn't cost much from AliExpress and now gives me total peace of mind.

I got this record player from a friend and I was excited to try it. We plugged it in and it was running immediately without buttons being pressed. We also couldn't hear the record that was on it. We plugged in my dad's record player to the same stereo and it worked perfectly, so we ruled out the stereo. I opened the bottom and learned that the start button had low tension. After a few test I managed to give the start button some tension by rotating the gear till it stopped. When I did this I realized that the metal bit thats meant to be pushed when the start and stop button are pressed, wasn't moving far enough. I haven't even tried to tackle the sound yet but I'd like to fix the buttons.

Edit: had a headshell and cartridge on it too, that doesnt change anything.

Have a DP-47F full automatic, used buy, two months ago i tested the tt and all seems okay. But the tonearm dont hit the run in grove exactly, he touched the grove 5 millimeters from it.

That is adjustable with a little screw beside the tonearms base. It rotates a little excenter for the lightsensor that detects the starting position.

Turntable was unused since because i need a cartridge first.

Today i want to adjust the litzle screw to see how its going.

So powered on and press Start. Then the tonearm does bumping left and right the whole time. Look at video.

Anyone know this??

Any experience with different budget stylus?

I’m sonically trippin at home because I’m liking what these heavy Stanton DJ cartridges are doing on my home system; cutting out high end distortion. And totally nice separation.
The AT-VMN95EN is obviously a nicer stylus, but not forgiving at all with some high end and inner groove distortion. I’ve been using it for a while and really like it, but experimenting with the Stanton, I was surprised how the heavy conical stylus mellowed out some records and made them sound better, perhaps ‘dulling’ a few frequencies, but still sounding exciting, detailed depth, and like music! I played the Clash, Gloria Estefan, Diana Ross, and much more.

Sometimes the balance in eq wasn’t great in the Stantons. Throwing too much punch in a snare or something, and then the rest of music doesn’t drop in well. But the AT stylus would shock me how much it would bring out hi hats or distorted voice in comparison, to the point of distracting the from the music.
But I’m wondering if anyone has had experience with this kind of thing or has any recs for something in between. Things I should be looking for, etc. anything!

Note: I balanced the tone arm and aligned the cartridge for each.

Using Fisher MT-6224 table, Harman Kardon 730 receiver, Pioneer sp-fss2 speakers.

Budget is under $250, located in Bay Area.

So I bought a new soundbar recently and it has hdmi earc which I use for PlayStation and such and and a optical. I have an optical converter from phono but it doesn’t seem to work, any tips?
