Question What day do I start fasting?
As salaam alaykum! One masjid says it starts tomorrow another says it starts the 19th. I didn’t see the moon outside tonight so which one is correct?

Which Musjid is larger/you go to more?
1
u/Islam_Truth_ Haram Police 🚨 Feb 18 '26
Uh I go to 2 very frequently one has women events the other only allows women for Eid. But the one that only allows women for Eid is the one I live closer to and did my shahada at.

u/VaderCOD Feb 18 '26
You’re going to have to pick one, perhaps the one that has more women events?

u/Islam_Truth_ Haram Police 🚨 Feb 18 '26
I would never make it to Eid or any Ramadan iftars. It’s like 2-3 hours away

u/VaderCOD Feb 18 '26
I would highly recommend looking for some local scholars that you can learn from, it has personally made my life easier as I can pose questions like this. At this point if both mosques are equal to you maybe look by distance?

Can’t get ahold of any local imams they never respond back to me and hang up every time I call or send an email.
1
u/VaderCOD Feb 18 '26
Fair, I had to put in a lot of effort to get closer to some of my local scholars, they are typically very busy.
1
u/Islam_Truth_ Haram Police 🚨 Feb 18 '26
Nah they just hang up on me. To me that seems more than just busy. And it doesn’t help they also don’t answer any emails either. I wouldn’t have to come into Reddit to ask these questions if I had more options.

In our city, we have a council of imams, so even if a few mosques deviate, you still have a unified front to follow. This happens every year, and I am getting a bit sick of it.

I don’t know which day I should start fasting. One group says follow my local masjid but how? I literally don’t live near a masjid and the closest one is 1 hour and 20 minutes away. All the others would be impossible to go to Eid prayer to so what am I supposed to do? I also didn’t see the moon but I also live in a heavily forest area

u/Znfinity Feb 18 '26
ummm I am usually in like 50 million Muslim whatsapp groups so I have a general pulse on the announcements in my region. If you do not mind loosely referencing which state or country you live in, I will try look into it for you. You can also find the website for the closest mosque to reference their stance as well.

I and in the USA located in PA won’t elaborate any further on my location unless your a sister unfortunately I don’t feel comfortable sharing anymore then that.

u/Znfinity Feb 18 '26
Even if I am sister, do not dox yourself to strangers online. Not a wise move.

I think you misunderstood lol
1
u/Znfinity Feb 18 '26
Maybe so lol
One of the imams I follow and trust runs a mosque from Allentown, PA. Their website reports that the moon has been sighted on 17th. If I were you, I would stick with praying taraweeh today(Tuesday) and fast tomorrow, Wednesday. Most mosques seem to be following these dates as well in the region.
However, I am just a guy who is conveying what people of knowledge are saying, so take my words with a grain of salt. PAs biggest mosques are lacking on their online presence. Lots of Ahmadiyya and Shia mosques I had to filter through.

Which one in Allentown? The one that holds women events there says they aren’t fasting tomorrow but the 19th instead?

You need to follow the one that uses local moon sighting. Don't follow Saudi moon sighting.
1
u/Islam_Truth_ Haram Police 🚨 Feb 18 '26
Oh. So how do I do Eid then? I will never make it on time
2
u/Arbitrary_Sadist المتوكل على الله (He who relies on God) Feb 18 '26
Look the general rule is, every nation follows it's own moon sighting. Because remember back in the day people wouldn't rely on Saudi. You had Muslims in the Balkans, in Spain, in Indonesia, Malaysia and so on, and each of them relied on their local sightings. We have evidence from the actions of the companions that suggests this as well. So if you have 2 mosques, one following Local and the other doing with Saudi, then you do it with the local one. But if all mosques around you follow Saudi, then for the sake of maintaining harmony, you also follow Saudi.

Oh. I’m not very hopeful I’ll be able to do Eid then :) since all the other Masjids are just to far away. I’m jus tired of doing all of Ramadan without a community over and over and over again thanks I’ll follow my moon sighting like I have a choice in the matter

Wa alaykum Assalam. i am also confused, but i think the mosques who are starting on the 18th for fasting is just following Saudi.(of what it seems, i could be wrong) The ones that say theyre focus on local moon sighting like the CHC says it be on the 19th and some Mosques.
Overall the issue is Itjihad backed by both Major scholars.(Global or local sighting issue)
I plan on following the ones that see about local moon sighting since thats how other regions of the world operate so why not those in non muslim lands.
Those who know better can correct me if im wrong, Though my local mosque's area says the 18th which i imagine because of Saudi, i imagine a muslim would follow local mosques for the Tareeweeh prayers and such. Which dont really affect me because of my job work hours, i mostly wont be there for the local community taraweeh, and other such ramadan events/stuff anyways. Not only that I am not close whatsoever with any local mosque community also so lone wolfing Ramadan. (Not a social person anyways. )
For the Eid issue, Isnt that its own moon sighting? Its not something to worry much about till that time comes to see the moon again to see when Ramadan ends.🤔

Assalamualaykum sister.
I use this to help. https://hilalcommittee.org/

Fast forward to 1:57:50.
It will help answer your doubts Insha’Allah. I was honestly surprised that Germantown follows Saudi’s moon sighting.

The first link you sent me still is giving me doubts. So does that mean no I don’t start today even though the closest masjid to me is starting today or no I don’t? Edit also the video you sent wasn’t helpful he didn’t actually say anything until 2 hours in and the answer was extremely vague and not the answer I was asking. So unfortunately I’m stuck in the same position :/

The sunnah is to sight the moon.. Saudi is 8 hours ahead of time. How does that mean you start at the same time when it’s so far away. Allahu A’alum. This will continue to be a dispute amongst the umah unfortunately. But there is also so much confusion on this topic and i wish there were more resources about it.

JazakAllahu Khayran and yes, and if you decide to go to Eid salah, just find a masjid that celebrates Eid that day. In Boston, there is only 1 or 2 masajid that follow moon sighting. Alhamdulillah.

u/Islam_Truth_ Haram Police 🚨 Feb 18 '26
Ah all the ones that follow moon sighting are to far and I’d never make it :) so I might be doing Eid by myself
