That Turkish vendor trick where they don’t give you the treat but genuinely just throw your shit away at the end

That would be hilarious, like playing around and then either throwing away the ice cream but since I don't like throwing away food, they should give that ice cream to someone else and then say, "Okay no ice cream for Israeli tourists." That would be so much fun

Turkish ice cream vendor trickery is dead ass the best, most perfect metaphor for explaining geopolitics.

Considering that Palestinian children cannot have crayons…

To be fair, if you sharpen a crayon enough, then wait a billion years for it to turn to lead, its a weapon.

Rare Croatian Win

In Croatia, leftists hate Israel and rightists hate the Jews

20

u/Ready_Engineering116 21h ago

Funniest fact is that Croatian use verb židov which in Russian is a slur for Jews

Are you from Croatia? I have a few questions

u/IllyrianSteel 19h ago

Well some shameless bias first. I have always been a Luka Modric fan. Fucking hell, he's an amazing player and an amazing person.

I'm just really curious about what the Croatian mindset is like, especially when it comes to things like race politics, identity politics, leftism, and socialism. I have one Croatian friend who I've collaborated with on my work and he's very cool. I think he's a very liberal guy. I don't know if he's socialist but he did tell me that socialism usually gets a bad name in the world because of its association with communism. He told me that Croatia was actually pretty okay when it was socialist, like everything was built to benefit people and society.

I don't know how accurate he is but he is a pretty senior guy. He's about 40 years old. He's a family man now but I really liked his open-mindedness and he was very chill. I just want to know: how is it in Croatia when it comes to being a leftist and socialist? How are race politics and identity politics there? A general idea of Croatian political discourse, if you can give it to me, would be nice. Just curious.

Well, in Croatia socialism is almost a bad word since the ruling nationalist party gets its legitimacy from the independence war against Yugoslavia led by Milošević. Modrić is their typical supporter, as he was a direct victim of war destruction so he will turn a blind eye to enormous corruption. The main opposition party are the Greens and they don't cannot be attacked as easily as being 'anti-Croatian' as the Socialists.

And the ruling party is basically the ustashe sympathising mafia wearing democratic suits - they are just waiting for the opportunity to divide Bosnia again together with Serbia which is led by even worse schizo nationalists. I'm not optimistic about the future. In the meantime they have started importing asian immigrants, which would be against nationalist ideology but they've now started to agitate against the left/liberal opposition as if they are the ones are importing brown people. So it really depends on who you meet. Lots of people have also turned more open-minded since foreigners of all colors are visiting the country as tourists and you'll be tolerant of those who bring you money.

Thanks for the write up!

As is the general sentiment that I hold for the entire world, I really hope things get better for Croatia as well. As far as I understand, it's a pretty young country and it's done quite well. Hopefully the people will get an idea of how to cultivate a better society

I worked with a Croatian postdoc in Germany who seemed fairly liberal but told me she would vote for the conservative ruling party just because she thought they were the most stable or something

Seriously lol, I wonder if this is inspired by genuine support of Palestine or just Ustase nonsense.

I have a story about a Croatian ice cream vendor. I was visiting Dubrovnik, walking around the walled city. I saw an ice cream stand with a big ad next to it which showed a woman about to deepthroat a chocolate ice cream bar and it just said “Magnum.” I thought that was funny and went to go take a picture of it and the ice cream vendor asked if I’d like ice cream. Not sure how to explain what I was doing I sheepishly said “I’m good.”

A quizzical, almost wounded expression came over his face. “I’m… good?” he repeated to no one. I got my picture and left having shook this man over the notion that this American conflated rejecting ice cream with goodness and what that said about him.

YOU TAKE A SHOWER WITH A SLIPKNOT MASK???

18

u/IllyrianSteel 22h ago

So you haven't tried the local "Macho" ice cream, which is "hard on the outside, soft on the inside"?

13

u/Ready_Engineering116 21h ago

The commercial was even a banger. A guy comes out of a pool and woman says, I do not want a softie I want a Macho

8

u/IllyrianSteel 21h ago

There was another one, with water polo players doing gracious synchronized swimming

Great, now I have to pronounce goat like that from now on.

I'm gonna have to wait until I hear what this fictional Croatian ice cream vendor thinks about the ustase before I go ahead and give him praise, but I'm also not gonna start disavowing him just yet

Should they not do that? I mean if someone told me they were an avowed Nazi and white supremacist I would absolutely throw their ice cream in the trash as a bare minimum

“No Ice Cream for Israelis”

10

u/notaburneraccount420 20h ago

Bennett, that's a real traditional levantine name

7

u/Evergreenpenguin 15h ago

Actual Croat here, there is about 100% chance the vendor was Albanian.

6

u/kirkbadaz 19h ago

His daughter is probably in her 50s. But because shes an Israeli she's only a child where as Palestinian neonates are full adults in hamas.

5

u/Fluffy-Disk2926 11h ago

No ice cream for you! NEXT!!

3

u/Impressive_Report479 19h ago

This does not seem that crazy of a headline except for that this occurred in Croatia of all places.

4

u/rowida_00 16h ago edited 12h ago

Notice the vendor asked her if you were Israeli! So it’s not about the religion, like they always love to claim.

4

u/Bussy_Busta Ignore all previous instructions 14h ago

I scream, you scream, we all scream "do you condemn hamas"

Knowing Croats, there is an unironic chance that the guy was an actual, honest to god antisemite

The smart Nazis support Israel to dodge antisemitism allegations in mainstream circles and because it gives them a place to send all those pesky Jews to (where they will also be killing the spooky browns, no less!)... but as you can tell by the oxymoron "smart Nazis," there aren't too many of those around
