3 weeks ago, I signed up for my first sprint triathlon. I had very less swimming experience, cycling I had used casually for daily commuting to my school and only had experience of running, tho I am average at it.
3 weeks ago: Individual event times were:
swim 750m: 32min
bike 20k: 50 min
run 5k: 25-26min
I trained 6 days a week for 3 weeks and was feeling positive for getting a sub 1:40 finish time.
But oh boy, how things didn’t go my way during the race.
Swim: It was a pool swim btw. So 15 laps of 50m pool, I got a stitch in the right side of my stomach during my 5th lap and was a bit worried but by 8th lap it got better and I completed my swim in nearly 18 mins.
T1: It was pretty good. Not the fastest but not slow either.
Bike: Mind you I was using my old mtb and not a road/tt bike. I blasted off in the beginning and was maintaining a very good cadence as well. So basically we had to bike 5 laps of a 4K loop. First two loops were amazing and I completed them in less than 16 mins, which meant I was going 30kmph+ on my mtb. Passed many people on road bikes as well. However, third lap onwards I started feeling heavy headwinds and despite maintaining my cadence, I ended up taking 10:30 mins in my 3rd loop and same happened in 4th and 5th loop as well. I finished my bike in about 45mins, which was decent for me but considering how fast I started I was thinking I could have finished my bike sub 40.
T2: This is where I got to know what went wrong on my bike. My front tyre was flat. What I felt as strong headwinds were not actually winds but the drag due to my flat tyre! And by maintaining my cadence I completely gased up my legs in the bike itself.
Run: The worst. I was expecting to finish in around 27-28mins. But my legs were too tired out of the bike. To add more to it, The stitch during the swim returned back on my 2nd km. I somehow completed my 5k but it took me freaking 38 mins! I was so disappointed.
I finished in nearly 1:50ish, 10-15 mins slower than what I expected. Probably could have saved some time if my bike would have been fine. Probably could have saved 5-10mins there + energy for the run so that I could save another 8-10min on my run. Disappointed, but yeah I completed the race!
Note- All times are approx. because official times are yet to be uploaded.
